O_DesoLunatic Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I have the standard edition BoS, pretty new to this game and I play, and will, multi mostly. I mainly play german fighters and I'm not too keen on current russian aircraft I have. Can't really decide - if I were to invest in one premium aircraft, should I get a russian plane that I actually like- La 5 or get more of them fun toys for ze germans - Fw 190. So, if you were me which one would you buy?
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Get the La-5 so you can fly Soviet when the teams are uneven without minding the aircraft, then get the Fw-190 whenever there's another sale or if you find $10 on the floor before this one ends - it's only a suggestion, of course. You'll surely enjoy both
ShamrockOneFive Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I bought the La-5 first and then the next time there was a sale I bought the FW190. There will probably be more sales as time goes on. Entirely up to you and your preference really
Sokol1 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Be what people say, the "premium" Russian aircraft is Yak-1. La-5 is just a slight "hot-hod" LaGG-3.
Finkeren Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Both are interesting, but both are also among the hardest planes to fly to their strengths, be well aware of that.
O_DesoLunatic Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 Both are interesting, but both are also among the hardest planes to fly to their strengths, be well aware of that. For me that's actually a good thing, since here 109s are top notch (my overall fav ww2 fighter) I'm gonna need something like what you describe sooner or later.
Willy__ Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 If you fly more on the german side, I suggest you getting the 190. What a lovely bird to fly... and burn commies
ACG_pezman Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I'm glad to read good things about the 190 here, she is a great bird. From my perspective though, the 190 is the better choice. The La 5 doesn't seem to offer anything that the other Russian aircraft don't besides that low altitude engine boost (which is reeeeeally nice) but it will overheat your engine fast.
StG2_Juuti Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 If you want a good fighter bomber on the german side - ride the FW 190. On fighter tasks you have to handle the Focke-Wulf with very much discipline. If you don't manage that, you get frustrated.
ShamrockOneFive Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 For the La-5 side of things... It's a decent enough fighter but I think the Yak-1 S.69 is more well rounded. The La-5 does have some good firepower and excellent rate of roll but the turn rate is a little lacking.

Despite all the threads questioning the 190's performance, I'd still take it any day over the La-5. I do really love the dual nose cannon armament of the La-5 though...
Adler_ Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Bought FW190 long time before when it was on a discount and haven't had a single regret. Since my main focus are Germans I never bothered with La5. The good thing about 190 is that you have an option to run away if needed, plus those gun pods will make any Russian plane regret ever taking off. Its not an easy plane but once you master it, you won't have any problems flying 109's.
Mac_Messer Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Both are interesting, but both are also among the hardest planes to fly to their strengths, be well aware of that. Yeah, I have to wonder why they are considered 'premium' by the devs anyway. they`re not 'pay to win' aircraft by any means. I`ve bought the 190 and though I find it awesome, it is still a lot harder plane to fly than the 109. If the socalled 'premium' P40 is such a joy to fly aswell, I might just pick it up in the future.

It's not pay-to-win. The philosophy for IL-2: BoS and BoM is totally different. The Premium aircraft are about diversity of aircraft types and adding some aircraft that are relevant in the time period but not necessarily specifically on the front being represented. The La-5 Series 8 absolutely is a Stalingrad aircraft. The FW190A-3 was present during the time period but not at Stalingrad. By the same token the P-40E-1 was present at both Moscow and Stalingrad battles while the MC.202 is a bit of a rarity on the East Front. It was definitely there but its performance and time of service matches up fairly well with the aircraft in the Moscow battle. For Moscow the Bf109 models and the MiG-3 are the top performers. The P-40 is a tough one to get performance out of - but I LOVE having it. Which is what the Premium aircraft are all about. 1
Dakpilot Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 I wish they had never used ''Premium" as a description It would have been much better to call it "Standard" and 'Budget" with 'optional/bonus/collectors' aircraft to bring up to full standard (complete) version If I had to make a choice between the two optional aircraft it would be very hard, because they are equally interesting and each have real individual character, I would skip a meal, wait for one of the sales and get both Cheers Dakpilot

It was kind of nice to have really experienced the whole product and want a little more and then add a couple of new things to the mix as time went on. As you say... Both are worth getting at some point and they are types with a lot of character.
wtornado Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 I like flying low level with bombs with the FW-190. I love the way the LA-5 climbs once I learned how to manage it.

Aircraft in other sims just have different performance but feel pretty much the same. I've flown the 190 more than the La-5 but I like flying the Russian aircraft and enjoy flying the La. Since the OP generally flys LW I suppose the 190 would make sense but as someone who went years only flying one type of aircraft I would wholeheartedly recommend giving some of the lesser mutts a go every now and then, the P-40 and I-16 are two brilliantly modelled aircraft.
