Few questions from a new old user

Hi there. First of all congratulations for this big piece of game!!!  :)

I was addicted to 1946 when first came out. I've played it for years and i was very happy when I knew about this project.

Yesterday finally bought it and have to say that so far the game is brilliant. Just what the old Sturmovik was missing, modern graphics plus a set of extras yet to be discovered, like the more complex engine administration.

For now I'm just trying to set up my X52 Pro and doing basic settings.  I have a lot of information to read and videos to look, but I'm too anxious not to know a few things just now. So few short questions.

-Is there a way to use an axis from the x52 to control flaps, or just assign flap UP/flap Down buttons? It is not as fast as a slider.

If so couldn't find the way.

-I have a powerful machine from a friend. Geforce G970, i7 and 20 Gb RAM. So far, the game is working ok on High settings and FULLHD resolution. I can notice horizontal lines while moving the head tho'

Should I install SweetFX and FlightFX? Do you guys recommend it as an improvement?

-There is a Logitech G25 drive wheel with it's pedals. The pedals can be connected straight to the computer via a Leo Bodnar usb Cable. Do you thing is there a way that those pedals could be used for the Rudder control?

Well. I'm afraid thet there is lots of hours of flight in front of me  :o:  :o:  :o:

Thanks a lot.

1 - Flaps on axis = No, unless Stuka that have 3 positions lever no one plane depict in the game have flaps on lever with unlimited positions.

Bf 109 is in a multi turn wheel, but controllers (joysticks) don't  have multi turn wheels, so press a key or joy button and hold.

Notice too that different planes have different flaps controls, some need press and hold to drop or raise (Bf 109, LaGG3..., other just press once (IL-2, Yak-1), other press several times (Stuka, Fw 190). Is not a "generic" flaps control for all planes.

"It is not as fast as a slider." - And you can't "cheater" with drop/rise times like il-2 2001 "flaps on slider". :)

3 - Direct in game controls GUI I think no, because each of 3 pedals on G-25 is a axis, so you need combine 2 then in one virtual axis for assign to rudder. Maybe with PPJoy (PITA to configure)...

Thanks a lot for your reply Sokol1!

I've noticed what you say about different ways to control the flaps on different planes. I don't know if systems where hydraulic or just steel cable on that times. So were flaps not variable at any position? Did they have just 2 or 3 positions even if being cable?

In Il-2 2001 you could move the slide fast, but flaps would take their time to fully deploy/retract.

Anyway, just wanted to know. Seems cool enough to me ;)

About the pedals, the game doesn't even recognise them. Plus what you say about them being proportional... will keep turning my wrist.

Been doing some flights, happy man!!!

To elaborate a bit on flaps: The reason you can't use sliders/wheel to control them but only buttons is, that this is the best approximation for how the flaps actually worked on most machines. On a lot of planes in BoS/BoM flaps were litterally controlled with a pair of buttons which you had to press and hold to set to the desired angle. The other types of flaps are either manual (109s, I-16), single setting (can only be deployed fully down (Yak-1, IL-2, MiG-3*) or have a range of presets angles that you can shift between with  lever (Fw 190, Ju 87). All of these can be controlled fairly realistic with a pair of buttons, in case of variable angle flaps (be they electrical or manual) you have to press and hold either "up" or "down" to the desired angle (manual flaps obviously move a lot slower) and it the case of the flaps having only one setting or a range of presets, you can cycle through these settings by tapping "up" or "down".

What would not be realistic would be to have flaps on a wheel or slider, which you can set to any angle you desire in a fraction of a second and then concentrate on something else, instead of actually having to press and hold a button for several seconds or set your preset flaps to angles that historically the plane couldn't do.

No, the flaps controls are perfectly fine IMHO. I hope we'll at some point see a press-and-hold controls for the manual gear on the I-16.

I'm also holding out for the "get the pliers" key in the I-16 so I can slash the cables and drop the gear at once in case of emergency :)

I'm with you finkeren. The thing is that I never got to know how did different flap mechanisms work for each plane.

Thanks u both for the explanation.

The button system looks like the best approximation.

+1 for the pliers button

u have to turn on V-sync, either in the game settings, or in the NCP - nvidia cntrl panel....

u can search for the optimal graphics settings in the hardware/software forum...

some really like sweetfx etc, i think it looks great as it is...

Zanks Tzigy, I was just looking for that info. Thanks for the V-sync tip.

I'll look now for best setup.

By the way... I'm trying to find a reference for plane recognition. Those with the planes silouettes.

I found some on the internet, but is there any post with the planes we use?

Thanks

Just so happens that I'm working on one as we speak.

Hi Robotnik. I've finally, after much effort, managed to get the commands mapped with my X45. I found all sorts of problems that weren't there in the original Il-2. Assuming that the x52 is very similar in it's programming and profile creation my advice is in the first place, completely ignore it! Don't create a profile to start with; simply plug in your HOTAS and map as much as possible using the in-game Key Settings by pressing the buttons and hats etc on your stick and throttle. Back these up with keyboard commands (you can map three different key presses etc to each command in BoS), then create a profile using these... but  I kept as much away from switching Modes on the stick as possible, as it seems that sometimes BoS doesn't recognise it. I also found that the two stage-trigger on the X45 only acts as one switch, and that the pinkie won't bring up the ShiftState, so I abandoned the ShiftState and mapped the second trigger to the pinkie - one each for MGs and cannon. Haven't found a use for the slider yet!

Cheers.

I use the up and down on the x52 pro throttle hat switch for my flaps up and flaps down. Works great.

Thanks a lot finkeren!!! That is exactly what i was looking for. Is just perfect! I usually got 3 views from each plane, but the two extra views are really helpful also! Thanks for the effort!!!   :)

Thanks cat and kestrel for your inputs also.

Finally i managed to ged everything quite confortable. I never used the saitek profiler or madcatz program, in fact it doesn't even recognize the joystick

I'm using my right hat for FOV, so I finally put the flap on the throttle hand index hat. Really handy.

In that hand also controlling oil mixture (slider), outer cowl, brakes.... start feeling complete
