IL-2 Model 1941 skins

Hi gents,

I made a small skin pack with 3 aircrafts(source: Sovietwarplanes.com) reflecting IL2 Early model 1941 of 4th ShAP. I used the basic template provided by 777, just adding the ID Numbers and changing the location of the stars. The aircrafts are Number 2-5, 4-2 and 6-3. Here is a small part of the information found in Massimo's page. All the credits go to Massimo Tessitori and his excellent work:

"...Photos of an Il-2 of 4th ShAP captured on the airfield of Old Bychau in summer 1941.

The most of prewar-style Il-2s are known only from photos taken by Germans to planes captured or wrecked during the first weeks of war.

The most of these photos show planes with metallic rear fuselage and stabilizator, that are recognizable because:

  • the green painting appears uniform between front and rear fuselage;
  • the light blue appears uniform between the rear fuselage and tail fillet;
  • both stabilizator and rear fuselage show horizontal ondulations due to riveting and sheets junctions.

In facts, these planes were all built in Zavod 18, that was the only one authorized to produce some hundreds of planes with metallic rear fuselage as an interim measure because it lacked of tools and experience for the wood manufacturing.

Prewar Il-2s, of all-metal construction, were painted with alkyd paints:

  • A-19f gloss green on upper and side surfaces
  • A-18f gloss light blue on undersurfaces.

This early Il-2 damaged and captured by Germans is similar to the drawing above. Note the code made by numbers 5 and 2.

Before the war outbreak the bort numbers were usually painted on the rudder in many colors: white, red, blue, dark red, light green-blue etc. Yellow was very utilized before the war outbreak, but its use was much reduced after the summer 1941 because it was the distinctive color of the axis forces..."

I add some pictures for reference but more can be found there. Visit the page to find more of those early paint schemes.

Regards,

Peter

Edit: The tail boom stars are properly aligned with the ones on the drawings(in the pics they look higher that they are); the screens were taken before the correction.

Hi folks,

I adapted a skin made for the IL2M42 but that originally pertains here, to the early 1941 production model.

The aircraft was pictured on the airfield of kirovograd, September 1941. Here you can find more details(It's Mr Tessitori's place): http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/il-2/il2-camo/il-2early1941/il2-early1941.htm

To be honest I was thinking that to port the template to one aircraft to other will be easy but unfortunately the IL241template is smaller than the 1942 and you need to re-escalate the layers one by one or merge all together and redraw the joining lines(that was my option). Here I attached some screens. All the credits to Maximo for his research and excellent work.

A curious thing about the template: when you select the VY2-23 Guns as an option, you loose the armored glass headpanel and the acrylic rear cockpit, the ailerons are no longer metallic and the right landing light is deleted. Nice options here.

Beautiful ^ work ^ Peter, thank you .
------------------------------------------------

Works in progress: No 2 & No 5 of 61 ShAP.
What I have achieved so far: Edited the layers within the original IL2M41_Public.zip.
Blue line on rear fuselage was altered, Red Stars where subtracted and repositioned, Front spinner painted green, the No 5, (and what appears to be an "S"), & No 2's where hand painted. (these numbers need to be repositioned and checked, will do in the near future)
Also:  A-19f, A-18f colours were adjusted to look slightly faded, weathered etc. (within the original layers).
Coming soon:

Thanks LC, I only change the color on the template, move the stars and add the number on the tail. The 777 template is excellent. Thanks to Jason and the artistic department. You can clearly see the progress in the different templates of the aircrafts. The latest ones are usually more detailed.

I came across several images of this style of camo for this model of the IL-2 and liked it.

Info from VVS research.  http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/il-2/il2-camo/il2-late1941/il2-late1941.htm

Red (?) 12 follows the camo pattern with 'balls', but it seems to have a metal rear fuselage. The pattern is particularly sharp, and the characteristic black balls on the fuselage sides are evident. The plane lacks of the characteristic wide red stars on the fuselage sides.

..snip..

One can see the characteristic camo that was utilized by Zavod 18 only for a brief period, probably in July 1941, and was later resumed by Zavod 30 in 1942.

My interpretation of Red 12:

I assumed earlier gloss lacquer paints, thus no matte finish, although you will see it on some control surfaces.  I still toned down the reflections from the default alhpa.

@Stick,

Number 12 is very nicely done; I like the camo and the care you put on the joining lines between the different parts of the template. Good job.

Thanks Peter.  Don't get me wrong, having these templates is great but I found this to be one of the most challenging templates to work with.  Getting the camo to come together in the tail section was a bear.  You must have had fun getting everything to match up with that multi-camo skin.  Very interesting template with the "two" planes in one.

The other skins here are looking great.  Good job everyone.  I'll have White 19 ready in a few days.

Great job gentlemen.

cool, i think Peter have had some "headache" too but now he is a master of the IL-2.

My dream is to get one time my favorite Il-2, the ARROW as Jason, Mr. Moore mentions in his book. Its great, so much infos in there.

So, lets wait for white 19. I like multi camo skins.

Yellow 9 is an interesting one, with the green gras spinner. I like the colored photo.

See you both

Salute

White 19 - ready for prime time (I hope).

White 19 of 174 ShAP . The sliding hood looks strange, as if it was an early one with an armoured band on its front.

The camouflage looks compatible with the one of Zavod 18, apart for the tail vertical surface that has a fully atypical black contour.

It's likely that the plane had the front of the spinner painted red, as other ones of the same unit.

Superb work all, gentlemen and thank you for the mention, LC! It's interesting how the changes are made to the template when you go to the later armament of the VYa-23 23-mm cannons. Those changes are all correct except for the metal-covered ailerons changing to fabric-covered - my research has led me to believe that all of the metal-winged single-seaters had metal-covered ailerons. It was only when the aileron/flutter balances (the things that stick out near the wingtips) were removed on the straight-winged two-seater were the ailerons changed to fabric-covered, which they remained to the end of the production of the Il-2, whatever the wing-covering was.

Best Regards,

Jason

Hello everyone,

I posted a couple of these early birds here in the past, and decided to do another pass on them.

I think these look better than the previous ones I did, so if anyone is interested feel free to download and share them around.

They both now have a custom Alpha Channel :) I also chose to redo the No 5, (it appears a better match to the historical image)

The red stars, and paint chipping show the effect by adding custom layers to the alpha channel.

The link to the older files is invalid... I have to say I prefer them to the newer ones. Can we have a link to the older files?

The original colours of : A-19f and A-18f have been restored just today. What did you prefer about the previous files, if you don't mind me asking Trooper?

Hi mate, I just liked the originals general overall colour... I'm no expert and I don't know which one is the more historical colour wise, but I liked the first one more.

Hi Trooper,

I made a "Rust" brush and just had to try it out  :P.  Hope you like your newer  file, (btw, thanks for the previous feed back on the colours, it was a hard choice to make).
