Rec5791 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 (edited) Greetings all -- I'm not much of a gamer (last flight sim I played was on a Commodore 64), but am a warbird buff and have been fascinated by the Il-2 gameplay videos. I've just finished building my own system (_not_ meant specifically as a gaming rig, however), and was looking through the game specs and reading older messages on the topic, and can't figure out whether there's any point in trying Il-2-BOS (and evtl. investing in joystick/pedals...) -- here's what I'm migrating to: Win10 / 64-bit CPU: i5-6500 (@ 3.2 GHz, max. turbo freq.: 3.6/3.5/3.3) GPU: GTX 960 w/ 2 GB vid.mem. RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (8+8, 2133 MHz) System/software storage: SSD Case: Fractal Design Define R5 with stock CPU fan and the two standard case fans -- so no special cooling. It seems like RAM and GPU should be ok or more than ok, but what about the processor? Its base clock rate is beneath the recommended minimum, and single-core turbo just touches it. Would it still be able to run the game halfway acceptably? Or would it poop out due to heat or have too many cores working too hard to reach an acceptable speed? (I read, however, that's it's single-thread performance that this game needs, so multi-core performance is kinda moot...?) And I wonder how far I can (safely) overclock the processor, considering I'm not babying it with special fans/etc.? (this is my everyday work computer, so wouldn't want to take any significant risks) How borderline is borderline when it comes to processors? Thanks for any input! Edited February 1, 2016 by Rec5791
SYN_Mike77 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 you will be good to go with that rig. At least on moderate video settings. Might I also suggest downloading Rise of Filght. It is by the same design team and uses the same basic engine. It is not as big of a hit on computers, but it is close. It is a World War One game however and the basic game is free!

The 6500 will do you fine and might even accept a lite-overclock depending on how reliable your motherboard is... If you would have/choose to go with an i5 6500K rather than the standard 6500 you'll have even greater overhead for simple multiplier overclocks.
Rec5791 Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 (edited) Thank you, SYNMike and Space_Ghost! ... I saw after posting that I'd misread 2.6 GHz as 3.6 GHz (oops) -- or I'd seen a misprint somewhere... And even so, it seems like the serious gamers all have a much faster CPUs, judging by the posts here. So it's good to hear that the i5-6500 should be ok (already bought and installed, so I'm kinda stuck with it for now)! And I will give Rise of Flight a try -- I haven't downloaded it yet, since the new PC isn't yet up and running (no time yet to mess with Windows install, transfer of my data-HDD from my old PC, etc.), but I will do so once I've migrated! (My old PC definitely wouldn't make the cut) Many thanks! Edited February 1, 2016 by Rec5791
KG200_Volker Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 (edited) A friend thinks about buying the processor, what is your conclusion? Can it handle the sim, and if yes what settings ? Edited August 18, 2016 by KG200_Volker
TP_Silk Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Don't know if it will help, but here is a thread that I recently created about i5 vs i7 processors and it has some interesting replies and links http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/23797-processor-discussion-i5-vs-i7-skylake/
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 i would go i5 2500k and over clock to 4.2ghz. I had it oc to 4,7 but when there was lots of AI or mp furballs he choked a bit , new 6700K is not
