Falco_Peregrinus Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 (edited) ... it was, unfortunately, back in the '80s.Yet, I found out some real pitcture gems on the net today of our 202's younger brother. We can see what a functioning C.205 looks like in full coloured pictures. Those were taken probably at Le Bourget, when Aermacchi restored the Veltro in flying conditions and flew it there. Some of those are stunning. There must be videos somewhere of people who recorded it during flight back in those days .. A non-flyable C.205 together with her non-flyable brother C.202 And to finish... A modern day Italian Air Force AMX showing a Regia Aeronautica scheme (without fascist insignas , of course) as a tribute to its glorious past. I hope you enjoyed them. 216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Grazie mille, Ioshic! The C.205 restored by Aermacchi flew between 1981 and 1986. You can find it now in Milan's Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia, safe and sound. 1
Falco_Peregrinus Posted February 29, 2016 Author Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) Some new pictures of the C.205V "Veltro" that flew in the '80s... Thanks for the info Luke. It seems these pictures taken in 1986 were then the last ones taken of the flying Veltro. First time for me to see them. Now what I only need to find is... a video of it flying.. there must be somewhere, some amateurish videos of people who attended these great airshows. One can only hope ) The following pictures were taken in the Sion Air Show of 1986, in Switzerland. Can you imagine? A real C.205V flying overhead, together with its arch-enemies of 40 years before, a P-47D, a P40M, a P51D, a Spitfire VIII, a Spitfire XI, and even a Mosquito. pictures taken from here:http://www.wings-aviation.ch/02-Reports/1986/SUI-Sion/Airshow.htm I hope you'll like them. No601_Swallow Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) The Veltro came after the 202, towards the end of the war, if I recall correctly. It's a personal favourite of mine since the days when I lived in Milan in the mid-90s. I was amazed when I came across the one in the science museum there (there's a beautiful little De Havilland Vampire up there too). I never thought it had flown. So thanks for the great pictures! Trinkof Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 I love ww2 Italian fighters so much... I keep flying macchi every day in BOS... So thanks for sharing this! I just hope I will be able to see her in an air show one day or another! 'S ! 1
URUAker Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 The Veltro looks like the son of a spit and a 109! A son that got the best of both fathers (the G55 even more!). Always a fan of the 205. 1
150GCT_Veltro Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 (edited) Macchi "205" Veltro come in 1943, but it fought most of its battles with the ANR, 44 - 45. Yes, it was a real beauty, and a pure dogfighter with 2x151/20. Edited March 1, 2016 by 150GCT_Veltro 1
LLv24_Zami Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Cool pics! That is a really nice looking plane 1
Heliopause Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 A real beauty. Btw it was also used post WWII: 1
150GCT_Veltro Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) A real beauty. Btw it was also used post WWII: What are you talking about? Macchi 205 fought also in the Arab - Israeli conflict. Macchi 205, even if in a low number, fought very hard in the North of Italy in the 1944 after the 8 september 1943. See the pics above. It fought also in the South of Italy with the Allied side (ICAF). In the 1943 i did see action also in North Africa with the I Serie (wihout MG151/20). Heliopause Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 It probably means that you have to work on your English
Falco_Peregrinus Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 Thanks you all guys. I am glad they were appreciated! I hope to find some more in the future. And Veltro, yes, like Heliopause very correctly said, it was also employed in the arab-israel conflict.. Since Eric Brown passed away just a few days ago, I am posting herewith his opinion about the Veltro he personally tested:"...One of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi MC. 205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of Italian styling and German engineering. I believe it was powered by a Daimler Benz DB 605. It was really a delight to fly, and up to anything on the Allied programme. But again, it came just before the Italians capitulated so it was never used extensively. And we did tests on it and were most impressed. The cockpit was smallish but not as bad as the Bf 109..." Probably the best "first hand pilot's account" one can ever find about this plane, considering the kind of pilot/person who expressed this judgement.
150GCT_Veltro Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Again, Macchi 205 III Serie - JG77 2'50'' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFSgAtuNq4E 1
Falco_Peregrinus Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 Amazing video Veltro.Macchi C.205 flypast at 1:35 is just... wow but the final low-level flying of the 205 squadron at 2:58 is... double wow (!) Thanks a lot for sharing
69th_chuter Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 (edited) ... Eric Brown ... "...The cockpit was smallish but not as bad as the Bf 109..." And that coming from a guy five foot seven.* I've always been amazed by the 109 cockpit. *That would be 1.7 meters. Edited March 9, 2016 by chuter
