Porkins Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 (edited) I posted a POT campaign ideas thread and it started some good discussion, so I thought I'd go with the Mediterranean next. I'd prefer POT, but MOT is probably more likely simply because the devs could reuse so many assets. Location: Sicily would be my top pick. Another good pick would be 1st El Alamein/2nd El Alamein. Regardless, it would need to have a significant naval element or I think it is a missed opportunity. Axis planes: - FW-190 - Macchi - JU-87 - HE-115 - Special: BF-110 Allied planes: - Spitfire - Hurricane - PBY Catalina (not 100% it served in Med) - B-25 - Special: Beaufighter (would love to have Mosquito here, but don't think it served in the Med.) What time the devs save in reusing plane models, they could put into beefing up naval assets. Transports, submarines, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, etc... North Africa was such a naval logistics war, it would be great to see IL-2 do it justice. Edit: just realized I'm posting these in the wrong forum, apologies. Will post my Crimean campaign ideas in the correct spot! Edited January 17, 2016 by Porkins
Jade_Monkey Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Cool, thanks for starting the thread! Just curious, were there any carriers in the MTO??
Finkeren Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Just curious, were there any carriers in the MTO?? During operation Torch there was at least, though technically they weren't in the Mediterrainean. I think the British also operated some escort carriers in the Med at different times.
Sokol1 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 The typical planes in British carriers (HMS Eagle, Illustrious, Furious in the first part of war in Mediterranean are Sea Gladiator, Swordfish, Skua... Not exactly what people want (and know)...
DD_Arthur Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Cool, thanks for starting the thread! Just curious, were there any carriers in the MTO?? Yes. If we go for operation Husky - the allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943 - we can have Force H which provided cover to the east of the island in case the Italian fleet intervened. This means two Royal Navy Fleet carriers. HMS Formidable carried the F4 Wildcat and HMS Indomitable carried Seafires. HMS Indomitable was hit by a torpedo dropped by either a JU 88 or a SM79 depending on which sources you go for. She spent the next ten months under repair. Check out the allied order of battle; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Husky_order_of_battle#Allied_Air_Forces
-TBC-AeroAce Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 One of my main reasons to thinking a MTO or ATO can work is because the maps will be simple.. sea or dessert, small towns...
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 You had different Grumman Martlet variants (export Wildcats eventually employed by the FAA as the customers were invaded, served in both land- and carrier-based roles and had loads of different modifications), the Sea Hurricane for merchant ships and the Fulmar, until the end of 1942. After that the Seafire, Corsair and Hellcat started to take over, even if some Wildcats remained flying.
Y-29.Silky Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Of course the Allied planes are only British again.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Since when are the Catalina and Mitchell British?
DD_Arthur Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Of course the Allied planes are only British again. Are you kidding? Have a good look at the order of battle again.
Porkins Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 Of course the Allied planes are only British again. Yeah, I threw in the B-25 and Catalina specifically to mix it up a bit. That said, if the Mosquito was ever used in the Med., I'd want that sexy beast in there regardless of it being British.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 It was used but the results were piss-poor if I remember correctly. The Mossie didn't take the dust and sand too well, and the extreme temperatures caused a lot of trouble with the glues used in the construction of the aircraft.
Feathered_IV Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I'd make Malta the centrepiece of the map. It has everything you need. Interesting landscape, carrier ops, bomber missions and intercepts, 109's in the landing circuit, punishing low level shipping strikes, night intruder action, strategic reconnaissance...
Sokol1 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) SM-79 and Motobomba... https://youtu.be/4cl69qp5O78?t=125 Edited January 18, 2016 by Sokol1 1

I also wonder about Crete.
