6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I picture it (why can't I sound it?) in my head as somewhere close to a Railway Locomotive or light Marine Diesel. But I have to yet find a clean sound source for a Diesel V12 around 60 litres. Apparently Big Diesels repel competent cameramen and good microphones. There are good idle sounds, but really none with the engine under load.
JtD Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 The Pe-8, Ju86 and several (PT) boats used comparable diesel engines, maybe it's easier to track these down for a rough idea?
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 As for the Ju 86 it apparently used Jumo 205s. There is actually footage of this engine although not running at full power: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuvJIoUTA8k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbfvM1wrQ18
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) As for the Ju 86 it apparently used Jumo 205s. There is actually footage of this engine although not running at full power: The Jumo 205 is Valveless, Opposed Cylinder AND Piston, Two Stroke, Naturally Aspirated and has two Crankshafts for one Block. It really has no equivalence in the world. It is unique, and so is the sound. The Yer-2s had Marine Sized (ca. 60 litre) V12 Turbo Diesels. I guess the Leopard 2 comes closest. It's 15 litres short, but still big. Edited January 11, 2016 by 6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann
