6./ZG26_Emil Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 At some point in every flight simmers career we're going to attempt the impossible and try to recreate the deceptively simple looking task of creating 'guncam footage' I have a project I'd like to start working on this year so I've been playing around with some templates...it's a lot trickier than I thought https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG2TUOmdu1c 3
Weegie Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I'm guessing your up in the Zerstorer. I do a bit of video editing & that is very impressive looking footage. The minute I seen it I was thinking of gun cam footage from Typhoons & Tempests in France. A casual observer would probably take it as the real thing. Very entertaining thanks for sharing it
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Fantastic stuff, Emil! One little thing that might help - you really got the colours and everything down from 0:45 onwards. In the beginning everything looks great and real too, the only thing that feels only very slightly off is the amount of white in the picture, perhaps reducing the brightness in the video editor should do it. Really loved it though, I just watched some real guncam footage to compare and it would be impossible to tell them apart
Sokol1 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Good work. You can improve starting the takes simultaneous with gun cam fire, simulating the trigger starting the camera, and reducing the speed in half, no sound - but this "newsreel after effect" sound is OK.

Really loved it though, I just watched some real guncam footage to compare and it would be impossible to tell them apart I think something went wrong with the presets I created because they should all have the same one yet that very first clip looks different or maybe it was just the mission time settings in game? Someone commented that it's best viewed in lower resolution which I agree with I may render the next one is 360p or 480p but you can change the settings on youtube which is probably good enough. I had a lot of issues with this project so I had to call it a day after so long spent on such a short video Thanks for all the comments, this is an experiment and the feedback is really helpful...better make mistakes on this test clips and then learn for a bigger project later down the line. I'd like to create a propaganda style movie with voice overs, that's why I experimented with putting the sound of gunfire over it. I was quite pleased with that because I spliced up the gun sound effects and then merged them to fit the clips rather than the other way around and you can't really tell there is 10+ segments of sound
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I think it's the game, not you. The game simulates the sun's effects on the human eye and the sun reflecting on the ground so it made things a little shiny there. I don't know which program you're using, but either way this should be sorted easily by creating a separate track for the initial bits using the same preset, then dimming the brightness there. The lower resolution tip is good, I watched on 360p and it looked even more real. The sound worked well and it does fit that kind of newsreel thing, I'm excited to see where this is going There's a really good Soviet movie, available on Youtube with English subtitles (coloured version) and also in its original Russian B/W version, that uses lots of newsreel footage plus music for the combat scenes, if you want I can pass you the link. Might help with the ideas and such.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Yep feel free to pass anything of interest along I liked the slightly out of sync sound as well, at first I was trying to be super accurate but as they dubbed the sound on afterwards I think it fits the concept of recreating the movie theme.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) It did feel quite real, together with that engine buzzing noise. So here's the movie in its original version: A 2009 version with colour and English subtitles if you want to a) watch the movie b) study colourisation options: A little bonus, here's a third colour option from a FB/1946 movie based on that. Might give some ideas for translating combat footage into the game, and I think they did a really good job (particularly if you consider that sim's limitations, i.e. that F3 camera and the old special effects): Edited January 10, 2016 by Lucas_From_Hell
6./ZG26_Emil Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Love it Lucas I did a Pe-2 video with a modern Russian patriotic (I think ) sounding song which I really enjoyed...either way I loved that song and was dieing to use it in a video. If you have some good music that would go well in a VVS video that matches the era it would be really appreciated

If you have some good music that would go well in a VVS video that matches the era it would be really appreciated I'd recommend checking out this video, it has a whole lot of songs from different periods of Soviet history including pre-, mid- and post-war. An interesting fact is that as the war progressed the troops and the people started leaning towards more cheerful songs (like Smuglyanka for example). This channel also has some good stuff. https://www.youtube.com/user/Jana1889/videos If you need any help figuring out the meaning of a song just PM me and I'll see if I can find it
Gump Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 cool. . the HD version is too 'focused', hence the 480/360 (blurring the focus) looks 'better' yeah, reduce brightness. the biggest thing that takes away from the 'realism' is the game's tendency to make all the ground effects (dust, impact) go away too fast. the dust clouds that disappear right in camera are noticeably fake. 1
andyw248 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 If you have some good music that would go well in a VVS video that matches the era it would be really appreciated There's a separate thread here: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/15256-what-do-you-listen-music-thread/ where our own Panzerbar presents a lot of Russian wartime songs. And... I really like your project! The gun cam prototype is really nicely done, and I can see it evolve with the feedback that some others already gave.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Thanks Gump all points duly noted Andy thanks! That is a great thread, I'll bookmark it for future reference.
[CPT]Pike*HarryM Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Well done, looks pretty authentic. 1
-TBC-AeroAce Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Nice work!!! Sorry to be noob but how did you get a forward facing view without cockpit?
6./ZG26_Emil Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Nice work!!! Sorry to be noob but how did you get a forward facing view without cockpit? It's one of the ALT F2 positions iirc. You can edit them slightly to be more central. Hooves gave me some tips on doing that. On a bit of a hiatus with movie making as my PC crashed and I've got to reinstall all my software etc which is a bummer. Cheers Emil 1
