SteelValkyrie Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Hey guys, So I took a bit of hiatus for a good couple of months (just before the patch introducing the new maps). Since my return yesterday I decided to deviate from my usual routine of flying the F4 or 190. First I flew the Yak, which seems fairly straightforward though I was flying on the summer map so a little unsure as to how much strain could be put on the engine. I was cruising with throttle at around 90-95% with rads fully open and the prop pitch at 95%. Upon entering combat I maxed everything out and closed the rads to about 50%, though after shooting down a 110 & 109 I was taken out by his wingman so didn't have enough time to see how long until the engine started running hot. I decided to get a bit more adventurous and took the Mig-3 out for a spin. I notice the water needs cooling a lot more than the oil, so I decided to keep the water rad open 50-60% and oil 20-25% with fuel richness around 80%. I was pleasantly surprised with it's performance and managed to chase down a 190 at around 2-3k before evading his wingman without problems. The acceleration on this thing is phenomenal, which added to my demise as I clipped the second 190 after making a pass (whoops). For all the lengthy debates and arguments that persist on how they perform I feel like give or take, you get a fairly balanced yet somewhat realistic experience no matter which side you take (as long as you're flying to your kite's advantages). My favourite thing about these planes is their stability when it comes to aiming, which favours the nature in which I fly them compared to the high speed/deflection snap shots in the 109/190. Beyond that I find the Mig has great character and is a joy to cruise and fight in, I also had the most ease navigating through thick clouds in it due to the layout of the dials (and those internal lights are handy). tl;dr = the Yak and especially the Mig are fun to fly! (But I have no idea about engine management because I'm used to easymode German planes) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In regards to engine management, can anyone point me in the direction of a collective of information regarding the optimal rad/fuel/prop pitch settings in cruise/combat for the Russian kites? (especially the Yak/Mig which I intend to fly more often) I know a lot of this business is just "getting a feel for it" but I was hoping there were some numbers I could work from, and if there was much variation in regards to if which season it is. I also noticed contrails start at different altitudes, does anyone know exactly which altitude you start contrailing now on the various maps? I've also noticed during emergency landings that I've been nosing/flipping over a lot more, is this to do with the new bumpy offroad terrain or have they fiddled with how braking affects momentum? Lastly, is there any other subtle changes or useful bits of information I have missed out on during the last couple of big updates? Sorry for the ramble, just excited to get back into the game and the weekend is approaching 1
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Please use the forum search function. A nearly identical thread was created in this subforum all but a day or two ago...You will find relevant information here in the appropriate subforum: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/82-manuals-tutorials-guides-and-tips/
SteelValkyrie Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 Ta, haven't had much time to dig around on the forum due to work and was wondering about other things like contrails etc so thought I'd tap this up in my break.
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) Ta, haven't had much time to dig around on the forum due to work and was wondering about other things like contrails etc so thought I'd tap this up in my break. I'd suggest having a go at the Official Manual created by LukeFF as well as having a look at the aircraft cockpit/notes thread he has been creating for all of the recently released aircraft. SteelValkyrie Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 I'd suggest having a go at the Official Manual created by LukeFF as well as having a look at the aircraft cockpit/notes thread he has been creating for all of the recently released aircraft. Ah thank you, I'll check those out tonight. Apologies for cluttering up the general discussion, I figured seeing as it's an amalgamation of my personal flying experience combined with various questions that it'd belong in a more "general" area than the guides and tips subforum, I assumed that was for people that knew half a damn about the game to post information on it.
Y-29.Silky Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Can't wait until you see yourself chasing running 109's :D And welcome to the dark side Comrade. optimal rad/fuel/prop pitch settings in cruise/combat for the Russian kites? (especially the Yak/Mig which I intend to fly more often) It's a good idea to turn Techchat on until you get used to the optimal engine performances. ~~~ I have my oil and water rads bound to the same keys which are bound to an up/down on a hat switch because while in combat, you'll need to open/close them on the fly. I usually have both at 80-90% while not in combat, in combat I see myself going around 40%, but again, it's all in that "feel" when it comes to combat. Prop/throttle I usually do 95% RPM's and 90% throttle during winter matches, 90%/90% for summer matches... Roughly. Flying the Mig last night, I saw myself running the Mig at 90% RPM's and 85% throttle for continuous. Mixture, I usually have a 85-90% for all Soviet aircraft. La-5 and P-40 are a whole different ball game. Using these settings though, I haven't blown a Russian engine since beta last summer. So in short, you can really push the engines. ~~~ I also noticed contrails start at different altitudes, does anyone know exactly which altitude you start contrailing now on the various maps? Contrails don't start until 8100m for summer maps. Winter it's 5000m. Doesn't seem like the WoL MEditor messes with the weather too much, unfortunately. I've also noticed during emergency landings that I've been nosing/flipping over a lot more, is this to do with the new bumpy offroad terrain or have they fiddled with how braking affects momentum? It's the new rough terrain. I'm sure you noticed more people taxiing too. Lastly, is there any other subtle changes or useful bits of information I have missed out on during the last couple of big updates? Sorry for the ramble, just excited to get back into the game and the weekend is approaching http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/168-developer-diary/page-3
SteelValkyrie Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Thank you for the informed response Silky, especially as I couldn't find a "near identical thread"! I thought I was being a bit timid with the engine and rads, though I flew more last night and found that even if I give it a bit too much welly it's quite easy to throttle down and open the rads open for 30 seconds or so and it solves any problems! Can't wait until you see yourself chasing running 109's :D My time in the 109 has come in handy, had a lot of fun climbing to altitude before diving down on unsuspecting enemies with no energy. I find for all the advantages the 109 has in the vertical, as long as you conserve your energy and check your high six often you can usually get the upper hand eventually - it definitely suits my flying style as I used to love the A6M Zero back in my casual War Thunder days. Contrails don't start until 8100m for summer maps. Winter it's 5000m. Doesn't seem like the WoL MEditor messes with the weather too much, unfortunately. I'm loving the Summer map as you can really sneak up on 109's up high, those god rays are so beautiful as well!
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 -snip- especially as I couldn't find a "near identical thread"! -snip- It's not my fault that this forum's search function isn't very great. http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/20290-engine-management/ Second page of the GD board - really wasn't too hard to find.
SteelValkyrie Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 It's not my fault that this forum's search function isn't very great. I'm glad it's not just me, thanks for digging that up.
