Planes only shoot short bursts?

Recommended Posts

I'm a newby having just bought the game about a week ago. I've been able to figure out most of the issues I've encountered but this one has got me stumped. I've only flown SP so far, and all the planes I've tried only shoot short bursts with a trigger press. Not that I want to shoot all my ammo at once but -- how do I get a plane to a shoot a long burst -- as long as I hold the trigger down?

Thanks,

Welcome to the world of flight sim.

All the time you hold the trigger down it should keep firing until the ammo is gone. Use the HUD to show how much ammo you have. A 2 second burst is considered the maximum at any one time.

All I get is about a three shot burst -- or so!

It's way shorter than 2 seconds! There must be some setting I need to change!

Must be something wrong with your trigger key.... never heard of this before.

Try as a test to set the trigger to a another button. If it keeps firing then there is something wrong with the trigger or settings. Are you using a joystick or the mouse.

Definately something wrong with your trigger key. You should be able to keep firing continuosly with all planes until you deplete your ammo stores, not recommended though.

Interrupter gear?

That or an issue with your joystick or how it is programmed.  For example the Warthog has a two stage fire trigger and I have both set to fire in case I'm slow on the pull (it might only fire at stage 2) or pulled too hard (only firing at stage 1).

You set both triggers to fire all guns?

You problem is related with your controller (joystick/gamepad, mouse...).

E.G. If are using a gamepad with turbo button on, this can happen.

Test your controller (joystick/gamepad) in Games Controllers, type Joy.cpl in (WIndows) Start box, hit Enter, select the device, go in Properties and press the trigger, the #1 should be red until you release the trigger.

If goes off before you release the trigger, check if are a turbo button on and turn off.

If not the controller are defective.

The index finger trigger has two stages and both are set to fire all guns.  I use pinkie button for just MG and button 2 for cannon only.  I rarely use those though.

Back in IL-2 "hay days" I use a Tm F22PRO (2 stage trigger) but set the 1st stage for MG and the 2nd for cannons, in this way can be fired MG only, and pressing the 2nd stage both, because the 1st stay pressed.

But end don't liking of the "F-16'ish" design for WWII planes, change for a CH Combatstick because this - despiste the "F-16'ish" inspiration - have a left side button perfectly for cannon.

The trigger fire MG and the left side button cannon, this allow use one or other or both - pressing simultaneous. And with pinky button as "shift" one can fire rockets and other drop bombs.

It honestly sounds like your trigger is sending a pulse signal via a hold.  What I mean by that is when you press the trigger, instead of staying in the "pressed" function until you release, it seems that it is sending a signal of "press and release" despite the fact that you have not released it yet.

Now I don't know what kind of Joystick you are using, but I know that Saitek and Thrust Master each use their own software to customize, and I am sure CH does too.  If you have some kind of software that you can use, try opening it up and going to your trigger and seeing if you can set it to "Hold" or "Press" because it sounds like it's set to "Press/Release" at the moment.

All just pure conjecture right now though.

From what I can tell, what you're seeing as "bursts" are actually the tracer rounds being fired. Only about every 5th or so round is a visible tracer, so visually it may appear as if your guns are firing in pulses, while in reality the firing is continuous, since you cannot see the non-tracer rounds fired between the tracers.

You can try firing to the ground to see if this is the case. Only the tracers can be seen flying out of your guns, but all rounds can be seen hitting the ground.

I've fired at the water so I know all I'm getting are short bursts. I'm going to take some of your advice and do some testing on the trigger. Sounds like the most likely problem. I may also see what happens in RoF as well.

Fixed!

I flew a Sturmovik over water and tried the guns again -- short bursts only. Then I flew in RoF and the trigger worked just fine. I could shoot as long as I pressed the trigger -- so it apparently worked fine in RoF. Then I booted BOS again and still had short bursts. But I tried something! I held my primary trigger down at the same time as the secondary trigger and could fire as long as I pressed both triggers -- so I figured it must have been in my settings. I went into settings and programmed the primary trigger for primary and the secondary trigger for secondary -- when to a quick mission and could empty all my ammo if I held either trigger down!

I don't know what the exact problem was -- other than my programming -- but I'm a happy pilot now!

Thanks for the help!
