FuriousMeow Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 $599 does not include shipping. $30 shipping to me. Items included are the headset, cables, an Xbox controller (price could go down if that was removed, I don't need or want it anyway), Eve: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale. Expected to ship in March. It's way more than what was ever stated. I think I'll wait this one out and see the reviews in March.
Matt Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 It's almost 740 EUR including shipping and VAT to Germany. I've kind of forgotten about Oculus Rift last year. I sold my Dev Kit 2 in December 2014. But the specs look very similar to the Dev Kit 2. The resolution is still too low and it's about twice as expensive that i've expected (didn't they say that it would be cheaper than $399?). No chance i'll buy it, but i'm curious how the competition will look like, as well as the next generations.
Chuck_Owl Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 600 USD is insane... that's more than 915 CAD + tax + shipping. That's like 2 months of rent!
Feathered_IV Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 $1100+ in Australia. I don't normally like to use the expression, but LOL!
Urra Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 It's only 150 starbucks cappuccinos(10 years worth for me) for that price, or three ships in SC. Trying to look at it from the bright side. Maybe they include a toaster oven with it, like I got when i opened up a checking account at my bank. 1
HippyDruid Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 I think I will wait to see how it pans out. Especially as the 'other' offerings will come to market before long. What happened to the US$300 price tag anyway? Maybe that F35 helmut isn't so bad afterall. 3
taildraggernut Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 im sorry but youre wasting youre money there are options with much bigger pixels and much much cheaper: https://www.durovis.com/index.html What an odd choice of comparison, that is effectively a more expensive alternate to google cardboard and not a cheaper alternative to the rift. completely different fields of VR tech.
taildraggernut Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 OK, now I understand why the comparison was weird, carry on.
taildraggernut Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 You can use your phone as a VR device for mobile games, not as a VR device on your PC, this is old news.
taildraggernut Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 I dread to think how bad the latency between the PC and mobile would be even on a USB connection, it will never be the solution.
Boomerang Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 effect on the eye sight 90Hz Refresh Rate ------------------------- And there's HYC VIVE: http://www.htcvive.com/us/
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 In theory (and theory only) the combination of something like this with a smartphone, coupled with a good method of transfer to prevent latency issues, will create a budget VR solution that works for most people until OR and Vive settle into more permanent, well-rounded and accessible forms.
SharpeXB Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 The price doesn't surprise me. It's a new piece of technology. I'm sure we can all remember when 1080p plasma TVs were $10,000 and $1,000 DVD players. Price will come down and quality will go up.
6./ZG26_Custard Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I can't see a price drop on this bit of kit anytime soon. Just look at TrackIR, outside of the USA. It still retails for around £150 quid which imo is far too expensive for what it is. I'm afraid paying 600 quid for "the rift" is not high on my agenda.
SharpeXB Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) I saw when following this, that $300 is about the magic price point for consumer electronics. Look at game consoles, disc players and so on. That's about the point where people will take notice. I had read somewhere that's what they were shooting for. The PC to run it is another story but those prices fall too. As for prices outside the USA, I don't know. $150 here for a TrackIR is pretty cheap comparatively. Edited January 8, 2016 by SharpeXB
6./ZG26_Custard Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 As for prices outside the USA, I don't know. $150 here for a TrackIR is pretty cheap comparatively. It would cost $218 with the exchange rate difference.
Feathered_IV Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 It's the additional cost of the high end computer to go with it that is the real killer. Until the price and hardware requirements come down I wouldn't even consider it. It's just way too much money to spend on playing a bunch of incomplete video games.
9./JG27golani79 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I was interested in the Rift but not for such a price .. think I´ll just wait and see what happens when other competitors arrive on the market.
SvAF/F16_Goblin Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Actually, at least DCS works on Samsung VR http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=156181
AwesomeSprawvy Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Actually, at least DCS works on Samsung VR http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=156181 That's a pretty interesting solution. It looks like that Intugame app is also compatible (Google Cardboard, Zeiss VR One, etc.).
Boomerang Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 It would cost $218 with the exchange rate difference. It would be nice to have rich relatives, who remember birthdays, that lived in the US, and came to visit regularly

Thing is that TrackIR is the only major headtracking company with their own software (there are other small companies that use Opentrack, but they don't have the reach). TrackIR essentially has a monoply. Gaming VR from the very onset is going to be Oculus/Facebook vs HTC/Steam with others coming in down the way like Sony. Edited February 6, 2016 by RoflSeal
