This looks really neat. Thanks for sharing!

After some improvements that tech looks to be very good.  Unfortunately they are too late, as most gamers will now start dropping their TrackIR, and move to VR.   Our monitors will still be used for sometime, but only for web surfing,  online banking, etc.  Although I'm sure that eye tracking will be incorporated into VR.  Oculus and Vive have been looking at eye tracking for sometime.

I would agree but I imagine we have a few years before these devs get around to supporting VR lol. /endsalt

I ordered one.

I'm very satisfied with TIR, but I just want to try this.

Interested myself so it would be great if you could post your conclusions when it arrives Bando.

Willdo, but the order said it will be shipped in three weeks time, so we'll have to wait a bit.

I wonder if this only turns your view or does it support leaning also (like we have x,y and z-axis in TrackIR)?

Almost as expensive as TrackIR buy it doesn't have full 6DoF support, does it? Can't see how that will work well in a combat flight sim to be honest.

They are now working with StarVR.  This is huge.   I've dismissed StarVR because it would be almost impossible to drive 5K 210* on two displays with enough frame rates.  Now they will only have to render 5K where the eyes are focused.  Its a game changer, and as I've said in other forums, will they be able to release this at a reasonable enough pricepoint, with the necessary content, before Oculus and Vive release their next gen consumer versions.  Oculus has the largest R&D department in the VR industry, and has been working on higher FOV's and eyetracking for sometime.

Wow, I am incredibly confused as to why my previous comment was removed being that it was in violation of none of the forum rules...

I will restate: I do not see this being real competition for TrackIR - it provides the same functionality less ergonomically.

Your right, there will be no real competition as TrackIR will no longer a factor.   TrackIR will go the way of the dinosaur atleast in flight sims.   Eye tracking companies will be working with VR headset developers which is the futures most compelling hardware for flight sims.

English clearly isn't your first language because I'm not agreeing with you.

"Tobii EyeX" looks like junk to me that has already gone the way of the dinosaur before it even hit the market... After all, by that video alone it is apparently a lot clumsier to use.

It surely looks to track a lot less smooth than TrackIR and the thought alone of tracking with eye movements sounds extremely uncomfortable and impractical for the long flights that we simmers put in to our hobby.

I'm sure the big VR headset companies are already aware that gyroscopes similar to the ones in a cell phone or IR systems like TrackIR's would and are do(ing) the job a lot better than some impractical eye tracking gizmo... The VR companies have barely gotten to the point that they can put two respectable resolution monitors in front of your eyes... I don't see them reengineering everything to accommodate something that is less functional.

Sorry, but not sorry... Certainly a "nah" in my book.  ;)

You missed the point.  Track IR will die a slow death in flight sims.  Tobii is partnering with StarVr to provide eye tracking internally of their VR headset.   Eyetracking will allow StarVR,  to render only the part of those displays with that high resolution, while still allowing the very high FOV.   StarVR would have had a very difficult time driving 5K resolution with decent frame rates without it.  Their is no doubt that Oculus, and Vive are working on their own eyetracking solutions.  Their is no completion between TrackIR and Tobii.  TrackIR in the game realm will die, and Tobii will carry on in partnership with a VR headset company.

The DK2 prototype used an off the shelf OLED display which certainly isn't good enough for consumer level flight sims.  The CV1 uses dual custom VR displays with a higher resolution, and custom optics lenses that combine the best qualities of normal, and Fresnel lenses.  Matt Wagner from DCS says the difference is night and day, so there might be a chance the CV1 will be good enough for flight sims.   I guarantee that once people fly in VR they will have no interest in flying with TrackIR and looking at a 2D box.  Everyone will want VR, but it will be awhile before everyone can afford it.   The good news is that VR is likely to reinvigorate the flight sim market.   Non VR games will become niche markets.

Your comprehension skills are on par with my English.  Sorry? Nah! :}

Take a cup of tea and relax.

I don't know what the future brings, but it will be great as tomorrow always is.

My EyeX is delivered, but I can't get it to work. My USB3 seems to be to old. At least, that's what support said.

I ordered a PCI USB3 board and will try again once that is in house.

To be continued.

Any update on your Eyex Bando?  I have one which works well, but seems to get stuck at the edge of the screen at time.  It seems to work flawlessly in Arma 3, but has to narrow a rotation limit.  I BoS I can pan 360 with it but it's tricky some time getting it back to the front and often seems to think I want to stare up through the top of the cockpit at nothing.

It has great promise but is a little frustrating for now.

Nope.

I have an USB 3 board (PCI) installed, but it gives the same trouble.

I cannot get it to run at the moment.

I'm in the process of trying to get Tobii support to understand what the exact problem is.

TBC.....

Is it working together with TrackIR? I think that would be the best use case. TrackIR tracking your head movements and Eyex tracking your eye movements.

Thanks

The technology seems amazing.

But for a flight sim, the 6dof is essential in order to see around obstructions. This is nearly as valuable as turning your head. So TrackIR is still superior.

Now the idea of putting this eye tracking into a VR headset to boost the resolution at your actual eye view point, that's got big potential.

This certainly looks interesting but it lacks 6DOF - but I´m sure it has potential.

Let´s just wait and see what the future will bring.

I also enjoyed watching the review from Frooglesim:

Can someone please help me set up my EyeX via Infinite Screen Extension? Whenever I try to get it to work, neither my joystick nor my eye tracking are actually functional.

Hi II./ZG1_GrendelsDad

Replacement or complement?

I do not own one, but the new 4C has head tracking and eye tracking, so I would imagine as replacement

Interested to hear how it works, and if there are plans to add full Tobii Dev support for BoS
