BluFox Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Good evening everyone. I am a new player of about a day and a half. I cannot for the life of me understand engine management to the point to stopping my engine from overheating and failing. I open my RPM to 100% on takeoff and on climb I pull back throttle. What information or help can you veterans provide or could you possibly point me in a direction to more info on what I'm doing wrong? I look forward to flying with you all in the future!
JimTM Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Hi BluFox, Welcome to BoS! Requiem has some great YouTube tutorials that include CEM (complex engine management) https://m.youtube.com/user/RequiemBoS Chuck_Owl has a great aircraft guide that covers most of the current planes. http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/10268-chucks-aircraft-guide/
andyw248 Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Depends on what you fly... In a nutshell the German planes, e.g. Bf109 and FW190, have automatic radiators but require you to keep ATA/RPM below certain limits per time unit, e.g. 1.3 ATA for n minutes max, 1.15ATA max continuous power, etc. The Russian planes require you to keep an eye on cylinder head and oil temperature, and set the radiator flaps accordingly. Some (e.g. the IL-2) require you to reduce power after takeoff. The links given by JimTM refer to excellent guides for all the different aircraft. Blue skies!
ACG_pezman Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Not sure on the exact translation, but it is the manifold pressure gauge.
Asgar Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 (edited) general chat is the wrong forum area mate. there is a whole section called "Manuals, guides etc" ...http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/17572-il2-user-manual/ Edited December 30, 2015 by I./JG3_Asgar
BluFox Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 Asgar. This is a general question. And these guys had no problem helping me out with some information. I don't understand why people like yourself feels the need to get on my post and say something that has nothing to do with what I ask. I guess every community has its fair share of know it all negative punks though. Thank you Jim P3z and Andrew though!
kendo Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Oh come on! For a new player asking for some general advice on how to get started what's wrong with it? Sheesh! 1
SharpeXB Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 What is the term. ATA?Here's the explainationhttp://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/1836-what-ata-gauge/?p=43352

For a new player asking for some general advice on how to get started what's wrong with it? Sheesh! What Asgar is doing is right. Blufox asks for some information in general forum but that information (and much more) is in the direction he points. He does it in a polite way so you are the ones who need to relax and thank him because his information is good, same as the one that provided the people before him, but they are duplicating information, which messes with the seach function. In the manuals already pointed out you will find the specifics of each plane and also in that part of the forum people with the same doubts answers them. I went from burning every posible engine to manage to fly every plane in just 1 week. It just needs time and read. Enjoy the information, because you will be flooded with it! kestrel79 Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 (edited) I have a lot of the charts and guides saved and printed out, but sometimes that's just hard to look at on the fly or remember. Does anyone have some general rules or preference with certain planes with regard to power and cooling settings? Would love to hear what everyone's cruise settings are, during a dogfight, ect for each plane. I feel like I am almost too scared of over heating and fly too slow, or have my rads open max most of the time. Would love to know what everyone else uses. Right now for most planes I'll fly around 60-80% throttle and prop with rads all the way open, when I see "continuous mode" in technochat pop up and leave it there for cruise or climb. BluFox Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 If you'd notice. Asgar edited his post. Initially he failed to provide any information pertaining to my question. He just let me know how wrong I was for asking a question.
Sokol1 Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 my engine from overheating and failing. I open my RPM to 100% on takeoff and on climb I pull back throttle. The most common mistake is forget to open water/cowl flaps and oil radiator...

He just let me know how wrong I was for asking a question. Well, that's a different story. Edit: anyway, the guide already provided is the one I have printed. Not everything but the first page (VERY IMPORTANT) and the cockpit ones. With that, you have all the basic information needed to survive to your plane (or better saud, your plane survives you). L3Pl4K Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Hello BluFox, in Bf 109 E7 and F4 you will become problems if run both with full power(Start/Notleistung) longer than 1 minute. FW 190 can use full power for a longer time period, 7-8 minutes. You should use the technochat, a message will warn you if time limit is reached. Ju87 and He111 has also a strict time limit(1 min) for full power, you should not exceed it. All german planes have 30min time limit for climb/combat power. If you start german fighters with manual prop pitch do not overrev the engine, and set proppitch to auto after start. If you fly Ju87 or He111, you must reduce throttle and rpm after start to climb power. Do not forget Oil and water cooler for He111 and Ju87. You will find manual for planes/engine limitations here: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/10268-chucks-aircraft-guide/
71st_AH_Mastiff Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 (edited) the word General means; as this is the word in the thread this is the right aera to place the questions, you don't like the word "general" then get your own forum. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/general relating to the main or major parts of something rather than the details so ASgar would be right and wrong.. Well... With the fact that the title of this thread is "Engine Management" it seems to me that we're here to discuss details.
andyw248 Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Still searching for that "Engine Management" subforum... But seriously I think it's perfectly fine to start a topic in the "General Discussion", including questions about operating aircraft as well as questions/opinions about the flight model, questions about combat tactics, navigations, and all kinds of other stuff. The general discussion is a place where questions/opinions are being picked up quickly, and that's what community is all about. Luckily we have very capable moderators that will move topics to their respective sections soon enough. As for the engine management: You will find that overheating engines can have catastrophic results. However, overcooling them (over the winter maps) unfortunately does not lead to shock cooling. It's good to familiarize yourself with the location of the oil and cylinder head temperature gauges of those planes that you fly frequently.
1CGS LukeFF Posted December 31, 2015 1CGS Posted December 31, 2015 FYI, there's this handy-dandy official manual I wrote awhile ago. You'll find plenty of good advice on engine management there, as it all came straight from the development team. 2

Is there no way that the manual can be included in an official patch and included in the game download?, updates can be applied with patches. Seems to me that such a useful resource is overlooked by many new (and old) players and leads to many posts, helpful that they are (have done it many times myself) directing people to the download Am certain there are many who still do not even know that the Manual is available Cheers Dakpilot Edited December 31, 2015 by Dakpilot 2
