FuriousMeow Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Taken out of context. I'd like a historical numbering system. Something like IL2 that looks the part, not some POS with a pink place and the latest internet meme written down the side. Simple, functional, easy on the eyes. Better? How is anything I stated out of context? If anything, the pink place and internet meme is out of context. You said Il2 is historical, it isn't. It's not at all. Il2MAT is the closest, and that took a lot of research to accomplish which still isn't 100%.
Volkoff Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) I like the ROF skin system. If the team desires to go with a different system, I am ok with that, but I would be happy with the ROF skin system, too. MJ Edited April 3, 2014 by =69.GIAP=MIKHA

Volkoff Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 the IL2 system allowed for personal skins - for planes, pilots and pilots' faces. That system sounds good, too. I would like that, as well. MJ
FuriousMeow Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Whilst I agree with this, I'd still rather have a system like IL-2 (1946) had than nothing. With that system as a basis the community can expand on it as they did with IL2MAT. Considering we're hopefully looking forward to another 10 years of this with different theaters, I'd hope it was properly done or prepared for initially than hacked together roughly. It's obviously per plane, so the per plane placement could just be a particular area where the decals could be applied - but I'm thinking of the back end side, ensuring that the capacity is there for mulitple applications of various numbers/insignia/markings even within a single squadron so that there aren't limitations and compromises later on. I understand the "better than nothing at all," but considering the potential for longevity I'd prefer the "thought out thoroughly and considered entirely" initially than just duct taping things together. The research and designs could be outsourced to the community, and I'm sure that wouldn't be an issue as long as there are talented individuals to take on the decal creation - but the placement and corresponding backend design for all of it is all on 777 Studios which would leave a lot of planning and resource allocation for the engine to be closer to 90% accurate for all theaters of operations.
Chuck_Owl Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 People in Virtual Squadrons need these personal IDs (I know I do). It helps an awful lot when flying in formation.
BlitzPig_EL Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Even a simple system like the original in IL2 is better than what RoF has, which is nothing. I am in total agreement with Klunk. I want to fly with the number I have always used, in games and in real life on my competition cars. I want my number 23. It's not a hard thing to do, and if the devs say it is hard, then there is a fundamental problem with the game engine. 2
Nil Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 It would really be enough with IL2:1946 numbers and 'squad badge'I really want my old #72 (and a piggy)
sturmkraehe Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) It's a must have for every virtual squadron. The RoF system is completely inadequate: 1. If you want to fly with personal ID you need to make the skin yourself - and that for every member of the squadron. This can be a pain in you-know-where if you are not a passionate skin painter. Not to say that you need appropriate graphic tools that are difficult to learn and may be expensive. 2. In RoF personal skins can only be used when the mode is "mod on" and you can only use these skins on "mod on" servers. Unless the skin is approved by the devs. 3. In RoF if your personal skin is approved by the devs you can use it also on "mod off" servers BUT: Everybody else can use your skins. OK, with an IL2 style system everybody else could use the same ids but at least you would have spared the effort to make a good looking skin. Edited April 5, 2014 by sturmkraehe 1
=69.GIAP=ALEXEJ Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Concerning online squad flying:Personal numbers are a nice thing to have, but during a mission (at least I) wasn't able to look upon the numbers during a flight. The identification was done with wing wiggles or the knowing which pilot has which position in the formation. As I lead the wing I wasn't even able to see the numbers on the tail of the others. If the flight enters a furbar there was no way to take a look upon the tiny letters. Too fast, too blury... Only in rise of flight I'm able to tell which aircraft is piloted of whom: With special skins for each or with coloured streamers.
6S.Manu Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 (edited) It's something that affects close-medium visibility too during a normal dogfight too. In the old IL2 we could use the same aircraft with different markings (for training reasons) and these were rendered over the skin. In this way you could still see 1-2 pixel of the current main marking's color at close-medium distance. Instead in BoS the skin becomes so compressed that the only way to ID a plane is by its shape or the constantly use of the zoom function. Edited April 6, 2014 by 6S.Manu
