Beginners Guide to Setting up the Track-ir

Recommended Posts

Hi all

New to IL-2 and Im looking forward to playing. I however cannot figure out how to get my track-ir to interface to the game. I use the Track-ir for DCS and Arma 3 just fine. Here I dont see any reference in the set up of the game for the device. I looked in Key Mapping and Input devices and dont see the track-ir anywhere. I also hunted through the forum and dont see a definitive guide. Can someone walk me through out to set it up in game. Thanks for the help.

You don't have to set it up in game. You can just make sure, that your TrackIR software recognises IL2 BoS (which it should automatically) and remember to start the software before launching the game. As long as you get two green lights on the device at start up, the game should automatically recognise TrackIR and set it as the default means of head movement in the cockpit. Any configuration of special TrackIR profile for BoS is done in the TrackIR software.

Note: In BoS TrackIR only works inside the cockpit. In external view you have to use mouse or hat switch to look around.

It auto-binds. The hardest part is setting up a profile in the trackir software.

Yes beat me to it, you find TIr profiles on all flightsim sites , do not have to do it your self.

Be sure to update the game list in your Trackir program or install the latest version:

https://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/downloads/

Had to do this after the last update for trackir getting recognised again.

I still have the previous trackir 4 version an there the bottom blue light flashes on when the sim connects to it.

You may without problem reinstall on top of the older version, only be sure to do it after a fresh reboot so there are no lingering trackir files in your active memory.

After reinstall however I had lost my profiles so better make a backup of those.

Location of the trackir profiles:

under your user name in AppData/Roaming/Naturalpoint/TrackIR/Profiles (win 7 & 10)

that is if you installed the sw in the program(x86) folder, its default location.

For Rise of Flight and this game I didn't find it necessary to edit any of the profiles at all. The "Smooth" preset seems to work perfectly.

Just plug and play.

Everyone has different preferences. I generally start with a one-to-one mapping and then increase sensitivity the further I turn my head.

Ez, set it so smooth profile and exclusive and you're good to go.

I can't really help you any more than I can send you my underwear and tell you that you will find it comfortable because I do. Just try different presets until you find one that works for you and then tweak it until it doesn't give you a wedgie.

hi everybody,

Lately, my track ir stopped working properly. never had a Problem before. When looking around in the Cockpit, it keeps getting stuck which makes it impossible to fly. i tried a reinstall but to no good, the Problem is still there. "Games update" is enabled. in the trackir-window, head movement is shown very smoothly and correct, but ingame it gets stuck after 1 or 2 movements and it also doesnt center anymore.

what can i do?

Can anybody help me?

i did an nvidia graphics Card Driver update lately. Could this be a Problem?

Can you record a video? CTRL+R ingame

Sounds like you may be getting some light interference from somewhere. Open the software with the tracking on, and look at the three dots. Make sure the only thing you see as you move your head around. If you see anything else, try increasing your light filter threshold ( in the camera tab) until you only see the three dots. You also want those three dots centered as best you can.

i have had that Problem before when the sun was shining through the window. that is definitely not the Problem now

To be honest, I never recorded one ingame. Also it depends if you use steam or not, but you can look for *.AVI files in the entire Il2 folder and try to find one file made at the time you were playing.

I am not at home so I can't be more specific.

Also, are you sure it's not a problem with trackIR because there is some light in the background? What you say only happens to me when TrackIR is not able to locate and pinpoint exactly the location of all 3 dots.

You can run the replay in the game and if you have an Nvidia graphics card, ShadowPlay can record it as a video file. The file in the game folder itself isn't a video format.

well i tried now with installing previous Versions (5.0, 5.1, 5.2), failed. tried to Switch off all lights, covered all metal material behind my back with Sheets, it is dark outside, no sun interference. i ve tried the trick in the Startup.cfg file (changed from old_trackir = 0 to old_trackir = 1) but no, hope is Fading :(

i am already cursing the woman who cleans our house, maybe she broke the Thing :)) (several times my track ir lay beside the Screen after she finished cleaning) could be...should i fire her?

some more description of the issue: i cant turn the head (on the Screen) more than 90 degrees most of the time. from 90 to 180 degrees is impossible most of the time. by 90 degrees it gets stuck, freezes and when i move my head swiftly to the other side the head on the Screen is set free and promptly moves all around the Cockpit. Also the head in the Cockpit doesnt want to stay still and centered anymore, as if the Pilot was drunk and unable to stay fix on the crosshairs.

should i consider buying new trackir 5 Hardware?

could a full game reinstall do something good?

With all u tried already, think hardware........

You mentioned head movement shows smoothly and correct in the TIR software though?

Do you have another flight sim you can see if it does the same thing with?

It's tough getting used to TrackIR, I have to map a button to constantly reset it if my wife talks to me and I turn my head or something briefly.

I never can seem to re-seat myself just right in my chair after I turn around to naturally get it set back up.

Recently upgraded to 5 and it's a lot more smooth and natural feeling, but I can still never seem to get centered just right without a button press. I can't wait for virtual reality in flight sims one day for true immersion in the cockpit.

Make sure your TrackIR isn't 'seeing' distracting light/lamps behind you! :P

The TrackIR 5 should have 2 green lights the entire time you are playing the game. Does one of the lights turn off while turning your head at any time?

not in my case. they are all green constantly

That means the camera is not having a problem tracking you then (lights could still be an issue, but you said you already tested that).

If it works fine in the software and other games it means it is something with the game. Is the profile the same as the ones you tested in other games? If not, try switching it to one of those and see if the issue remains .

yes, the Profile is the same.

i have no more ideas

maybe i can Change something in the track ir Folder? any advice guys?

I would be inclined to think there is something specific in your BOS game setup that is conflicting with your Track IR Profile.

Have you tried a different TIR profile to see if the behavior still exists?

Do you have the TIR profile set to "exclusive"?

This may be a shot in the dark, check and see what your default camera setting is  under "camera settings". May be it is on snap view and changing it to pan may correct this.

I am really not sure if this influences this or not, I have my default view on pan. I would also check  update game list in  your trackir again just to be sure it is up to date ( click yellow circle in upper left hand corner when you start trackir manager and click update game list ).

Good luck !!!

Try a different USB port. If you're using a hub try an onboard port.

It's probably a binding conflict within the game and not trackIR.

Make a copy of the file "current.map" and place it somewhere safe (i.e. your desktop). Then delete the original file. If you are using steam you will find it in a file path similar to: /Steam\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\input

Fire up the game and see how it works. This will reset ALL of your keybinds, but most importantly, it will reset all TrackIR settings to the defaults. If it doesn't work, you can just copy the backup file from the desktop back into the folder so you don't have to rebind everything.

i tried this, but the issue is still there. new hardware should arrive soon, if it still don't work, well then i will kill something

Is there any way to bind a button on my HOTAS to a key to center my Track IR? When I am in the heat of battle my targeting reticle becomes skewed.

Posted

absolutely

I have both F1 and "center view" in TrackIR software mapped to throttle button, works great

Posted (edited)

Do you have a tir 5?

do you use a tract clip?

If you use both do you have the tir OFFSET to the right of center about 6 inches?

this is a required offset to work correctly, it should not be centered with the center of your monitor
