Xenunjeon88 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I'm kind of confused as to how the bomb sights work in BOS cause what I end up trying to do is make the sight picture still, get rid of vertical and horizontal drift and get the cross hairs over the target... Problem is even when the sight picture is absolutely perfect, (by which I mean its still, focused and un-moving on the target, not drifting left or right, up or down when I leave the sight alone) The bombs still land WAAYYY off... My most accurate bombing run requires the sight picture to be drifting all over the damn place, with me at the controls trying to wrestle the bomb sight onto the target like a bull rider... I look at other sims (CLOD Team Fusion mod) and BOS feels really weird (and frustruating). Is this a realistic representation of the Lotfernrohr 7 bombsight?
F/JG300_Gruber Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I think you are forgetting to correct for the wind, or aren't doing right maybe. If you are used to the Lotfe in CloD or Il2 1946 here's a few stuff you need to know :You need to enter the parameters as they are displayed on the instruments inside of the bombsight view: speed is IAS and alt is QNH (no need for calculation of the TAS, the sight does it automatically for you), however you still need to substract the target elevation but it's 50 to 200m usually, like in CloD, the map is pretty flat. If I have no idea of the correct value, I go for 100m, this gives me good results. Middle upper screen, click on the cloud and look for an approximation of the wind speed and direction at your flying altitude (you will most likely need to extrapolate a bit). Then enter the wind speed on the corresponding dial, and the wind direction relative to the aircraft heading If all parameters are entered correctly, bombs will hit on or very close to the aiming point. Each time I missed the target had was some faulty input on the bombsight. One thing that usually throw off a bit my aim is when I need to correct the heading at the last minute because the target wasn't visible early (happens a lot when bombing at 5k) and I forget to report the change in heading in the wind direction dial. with 10+m/s wind speed at 4 of 5k, a 10 degree wind direction error will cause a lot of inaccuracy on the ground. It takes some times to get used to it but once you get it, the bombsight here is very pleasant to use and very accurate. I hope this helps. 1
Gunsmith86 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 In Chuck´s guide it is described with pictures. CHUCK’S GUIDE TO IL-2 BATTLE OF STALINGRAD: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-uSpZROuEd3WV9zRFRwMDJVWGc&authuser=0 1
Sokol1 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 (edited) For easy wind correction use the "wind angle" tools - physical or virtual (in overlay) - or the electronic calculator (drawback, need Alt+Tab): http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/11600-wind-angle-calculator/?hl=%2Bwind+%2Bangle&do=findComment&comment=284673 Edited December 26, 2015 by Sokol1
Xenunjeon88 Posted December 26, 2015 Author Posted December 26, 2015 You are correcting for wind, right? Yeah, I'm correcting for wind, when the bombs are off, they're usually land before or after the target with a little error in left or right.

Ok, I think I might know what the problem is then. You have to set the bomb sight for True Air Speed (TAS) but the speed gauge in the cockpit gives you Indicated Air Speed (IAS). If you're setting your sights to the gauge reading, your bombs will be well off the mark. You have to convert IAS to TAS before setting your sights.

Finkeren Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 My bad, sorry. I'm thinking of RoF. Never mind my latest post.
ShamrockOneFive Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 So the bombsight is not in TAS? Its in IAS... That may explain my terrible bombsight performance.
Willy__ Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Just do a test in normal mode. Enter in bombsight view and do your thing like you normally would do, the difference in normal mode is that you have that aim on the ground, pointing where the bombs will fall, so now you can compare it with the bombsight. Anyways, iirc you dont really need to make speed convertions.
