Thinking about buying expansion, tanks and combine arms battles

WOW! I bought the main game awhile back but hardly played it...hard time setting controls and other game issues. I was thinking about returning and buying the newest expansion but before I do I have a few questions.

Tanks? I play War Thunder and love the combine arms battles. Is IL2 headed in this direction? Can tanks and planes be on the same map and even attack each other? Also, how is the damage model for tanks? As detailed as the planes?

How is the Italian MC 202? How does it fight in the game and what is its payload...bombs?

Yes, tanks and planes can be together on the same map *IF* the server operator and mission designer have set it up that way.

The Mc202 is pretty nice, but that depends on how you use it. As with all aircraft. They are not instant ace makers, you can't just grab something 'pwn' everyone. The advantages and disadvtanges of one aircraft have to be levied against the advantages and disadvantages of the opposing aircraft.

The Mc202 has a few options. It can operate with just the twin 12.7s, or add in additional 7.7s in the wings, or 20mm in wing gondolas, add 2x 50 and 2x 100T bombs, add additional armor to the front windscreen. But it isn't going to be fast, it's a nice little fighter - better for the earlier BoM era than against the La5, Yak, and even against the heavily armored P40 it can suffer. Depends on how it is operated, and depends on how those opposing operate their aircraft. There is no absolute "this plane beats this plane." Anyone who says that truly hasn't a grasp on "air combat." (virtual air combat, computer air combat, whatever - but that same statement does apply in the real world, not so much in missile vs missile era but..)

However - I absolutely do not want this to be heading in the direction of War Thunder. That would be awful.

Why? You are not in favor of combined arms battles?

There's already a War Thunder type game. It's called War Thunder. That's why I am not in favor of it, because it already exists.

If well implemented (*cough, cough* NOT like in DCS) I can't see a problem with is as long as realism isn't compromised. WT is a rubbish game and I sincerly hope IL-2 won't follow that path. With that said I have always dreamed about a Arma type game with realistic air ops.

The damage model seems pretty well researched to me.  In fact, the devs say that they used what they learned about armor penetration from doing the tanks to modify a few things for the armor in the planes.

I think what most people are afraid of is that this sim will turn into  a game like War Thunder with the same type of game play.  I don't see that happening my self and I think the way it is implemented so far shows that they will not go down that path.  Personally I think having tanks and planes on the same server is proving to be a great boon to both tank guys and the plane guys.

Keep the one you have. Buy the expansion. It is not a one or the other kind of thing. You will get the most out of this series if you add on instead of swapping out.

Bearcat:  I think he meant returning to the game (which he hasn't played in a while) and buying the expansion.  I could be wrong though.

..the newest expansion...

One thing that may you don't notice, the "newest expansion" don't mean better (uber/OP) planes - since they are models pre-BoS era - just variety.

If tanks are what's got you interested, you don't need to buy BoM to play them. They're available with BoS. Try them first.

The developers have largely played down the implementation of tanks in IL2 as kind of an experiment. There's no guarantee we're ever going to get any more tanks and I don't think the plans were to make tanks as detailed as planes. We don't know what the future holds but at this stage the answer seems to be no to IL2 becoming more combined arms focused. Wait and see.
