I think Nicaragua sandinistas will try to stage a comeback ;) But seriously, with this kind of detail heli missions to hunt down terrorists not to mention large scale red flag exercises are worth the price of admission alone. Hell, even free flight is worth the admission price in itself :)

Nice eye candy and nice flying there 89! It looks like you have all the graphics settings maxed out. What are your systems specs (cpu, video, memory)? My old Asus GTX 680 is still hanging in there but I need to dial the settings down to keep the frame rates decent.

1CGS and Eagle Dynamics (along with 3rd party devs like BelSimtek) are making some fantastic sims. I hope that they both enjoy increasing support.

I'm still downloading, this is just a random youtube video that I liked. No idea what kind of setup was used in the vid. I've got a 680 myself, will see how it goes in a couple of hours fingers crossed.

I was seeing 30-50 fps in the L-39 and Huey. No AA, textures medium, shadows low. You may run into some long delays and crashes when loading missions in SP and MP. I sometimes had to reboot after completing a mission before starting a new one. That's alpha for you.  :)

What is the rest of your rig like? I've got an i5, 8gb RAM (16gb on the way) and ordinary hard drive :)

Pretty much identical to mine. I've got an SSD and 16gb RAM coming, will update how it plays with just them added. Atm  high settings (not ultra) show very good fps (40-90) but there is lag and stutter from streaming textures as my RAM and graphics card VRAM are bottoming out. PArticularly so when flying NOE. Not been to Vegas yet though, doubt it will be as smooth as in the OP video  :)

The sensation of speed and flight is superb though, absolutely loving the new engine :good:

Nice shots 89.

I was was online with the F-86 a couple of hours ago and I was getting 50-90 fps most of the time. Not a lot of online lag evident the way it was in v1.2 and v1.5.

What kind of international flashpoint wars will be going on there?

The Mexican-American war of 1848. Also, announcing DCS: Springfield Model 1842 Musket! Expected to be released Q1 2018 for $60. Pre-order now for $47.88 and get an extra $8 in bonus cash towards future purchases. Better order now as prices will be increasing after release. With this upcoming module, DCS will become the gold standard for first person shooters.  Sorry, that last newsletter demanded a bit of fun at its expense. I couldn't help but bust out laughing at parts of it.

But in all seriousness, DCS is looking pretty good these days. They still have a few legacy elements but overall they've done a pretty good job of bringing it up to modern standards. I don't have NTTR at this time, I'm waiting on some performance reports on it by people using something a bit more mid grade than dual Titan X's and other such things.

Watched the video.   Does it all feel a bit like too little too late?

GTX680, i5-3570, 16GB RAM here. All settings maxed out beside Anti Alasing. FPS are smooth as silk, except when flying really low over the strip in Las Vegas. (Around 20 FPS there)

I think it looks great, except for the lighting. There's just always been something not quite right with the contrast and gamma in DCS.

Other than that, those cityscapes sure are impressive.

Still downloading the damned map. 26gb with an stone age bandwidth is not too much fun.

Can we do some casino one-armed bandit gambling there? 26gb OMG I dont even have so much free space on my HDD :o:

No doubt an amazing map, but modelling downtown Vegas to that level for a Military combat Sim??? great tech demo for sightseeing

more and more DCS seems to lose its direction, - historical Combat maps and strange aircraft matchup, or maybe there was actually no direction to lose

As a technical study/training sim (and that is ED's core business) it is great

Cheers Dakpilot

I will skip this map for sure.Nothing interesting in it for me (those slot machines could talk me into it though  :)  ).

And the size of it.Will all maps now come out in such huge gb packages? Straits of Hormuz will be much more usefull. As would be remake of original Black sea/Caucasus/Georgia map and some near/middle-east map to reenact jet combat of 80s and 90s.Korea would be a blast,of course ;)

Same as you, Brano

I am not interested in Nevada

I guess a map of Syria would be a blockbuster nowdays

Quality has a price, I imagine future maps will all be this big. I have no problem in downloading huge maps, if that's the quality we will get. I'm looking forward to Strait of Hormuz too, but I'm already happy with NTTR. It's the biggest training area for modern military jets, after all.

Too contentious to ever happen, but actually it would make sense. The area has seen some very rare real air combat.

Not particularly excited about Nevada but at the same time it's easy to have a little imagination and just go with it. Lots of campaigns throughout these years used quite a bit of beyond plausible scenarios so a good mission designer can pull it off.

Personally I see this map coming out as more of a landmark for them, Nevada spent over half a decade in development and now it's ready and looking great, finally making the transition from the old Black Sea map (which I love to death to be honest, I just wish they'd give Crimea back to it, love flying there). Lots of other maps seem to be coming shortly so that'll be fun to see.

From the top of my head there's Hormuz, Normandy and Leatherneck's mystery theatres coming relatively soon. Then VEAO is planning to release Duxford, Falklands, Tobruk and the Mach Loop sometime. These should spice things up a little.

In what way?Has this tech been superseded? :)

Not only does NEvada have many details, but the traffic is alive, some is slow, some fast, some cars overtaking others, trucks, buses, lots of parked cars in the streets, multistorey car parks etc - its all going off, the world seems alive ...

VEAO is planning to release ... Tobruk

That would be perfect, flying over Nevada immediately takes me back Flatspinman's "Afrika!" il2 campaign, would be great to see it reincarnated. Hmm... Maybe it could be reincarnated into the modern jets of FC3 over the sands of NTTR Nevada? :) Flatspinman, what do you reckon? :) The mission editor is very usable in DCS!

Since DCSW is more "what if" than other thing, people can simulate Red Dawn (1984) and (2012) and "what if" by "what if" , why not Soar in to the Sun?.

Its not "what" battle is covered, its about "how" ;) I wouldnt mind Red Dawn if its a well made campaign.

some GTA game
which is 60gb these days as well ;)
Posted (edited)

Right about the file size. Most typical games like Black Ops etc are pushing 60GB

I shouldn't brag about my internet speed... ok I will anyways ... I can download that in a few minutes :-D

I think the DCS quality is great. The only bothersome thing is how long the stuff is in Beta.

I bought the F-86 back in July '14 and it's still a Beta. That's like 16 months. 1CGS made an entire game in that time frame.

So I hope these maps don't take so long to be finished.

Don't see why it would be contentious. They're just pixels on the screen.

Posted

Luke, I think you know better than to assume that "pixels on a screen" can't be a contentious issue ;)

Just look at the debates we've had here over the display (or lack thereof) of swastikas on a couple of tail fins. And that's over a conflict and a set of atrocities that happened over 70 years ago.

Posted

That's my thought but ED has always avoided doing real world conflicts, even ones in the relatively distant past. Never understood that approach tbh. A great map for the existing and upcoming planes would be Iran/Iraq/SA around the Persian Gulf. It would allow for accurate match ups from the 1980's to present. Instead, they are doing SoH, over 500km away from there. Other than the US Navy shooting down a commercial airliner, I don't think that area has ever seen an aerial battle. Given current politics, it also seems unlikely to happen anytime in the next 10-20 years. I don't see why they don't just go full fictional on it like the old Enemy Engaged series did given their squeamishness about actual wars. It would certainly save time and allow for more flexibility in mission/campaign design.

In my opinion ED has a thing for fortune-telling. Their avoidance of flashpoints put them with a map that captured all of the Russia-Georgia war in 2008, and they had Crimea in the older version too. I think DCS in general always was down for fictional stuff.

It's still possible (as it was made already) to port real scenarios into the Caucasus or Nevada map. For example, set up a mission where Russian and American attack aircraft need to bomb the same insurgent faction spread across the country or state border area. By default there should be no air engagement, however should any of them stray too close to the aforementioned border or get too close to the other's air assets they may be engaged by fighters and/or SAM batteries. Add S-300 and Patriot on standby all over the place for that nice nervous RWR and you have a relatively simple yet tense mission, based on something real, in an area that's generic enough not to matter. You can take it up a notch by putting players as the air defence fighters with strict ROE and see how long it takes for a smartass to react aggressively to being painted by an aircraft.

I agree when I first heard about a Nevada map I wasn't too excited.

But I think ED is thinking about selling this to the Government for Red Flag simulator Training ops perhaps? I know they have made other maps that aren't available to us for other countries so maybe they had this in mind when creating this map.

Someone should make a Red Dawn Campaign, have some fun with it. Still looks amazing.

What use have the Nevada map for we virtual pilots of Bf-109? .WTF !!.. about 17Gb installation of DCSW 2.0 ALPHA, ...and It´s no works because it have no map. It´s needed pay for the "new" Nevada map.
E.D. should fix the trim and flaps handwheels of Bf-109K4, and work in a map of Europe, rather than spending time on these useless things, who is possible to do in real live.

Well  ED have Normandy map in the pipeline, but that is after Straight of Hormuz, so ETA about 2025.
