I'm just learning how to taxi and take off with the Yak-1.  With simplified controls everything's fine and level.  But with realistic controls my plane, once in the air, pulls down and to the right.  I was thinking maybe this is a controller issue since I have the Xbox One controller but then I thought maybe this is how WWII planes just fly (with the torque of the propeller pulling the plane down and to the right).  Am I right?

Actually, it's not "down and to the right" - it's "Back, and to the left... back, and to the left... back, and to the left."

Sorry - just finished watching some of that atrocious Oliver Stone movie again, and couldn't resist.

It does sound like it's probably some sort of controller issue, as I've never experienced anything like that with my joystick setup (and don't recall seeing other posts by people talking about that sort of thing).  I've never tried using an xBox controller for BoS so I can't say what might be going wrong with yours, but maybe someone around here who's tried using such a controller will be able to help you out here.

I looked in the joystick sensitivity setup and sure enough, the x-axis centers a bit off center according to the movement indicator...

Your controller have issue that have low trow (angle movement) and make worse the BoS typical high sensibility for control (joystick) inputs.

So start using big values in "sensibility" adjust.

For calibrate properly the controller, use DView, this allow compensate this off center axis. Windows calibration is very "basic".

How use Dview:

A idea that can be "funny": Using JoyToKey set the XBox controler X, Y axis to make mouse movements - set the Y inverted - an try that new "Mouse Point" fly, but controlling with the Xbox pad.

Figured it out.  I found the BoS manual and learned what Dead Zone is for.  So I increased that and it fixed the problem.
