Tanks and Airplanes, altogether now....

I know it is great to have controllable tanks, at least for many of you, but I actually do not plan to use them, and my PC, being low standard ( old i5 ) is showing the effects of entering a MP server where tanks are active...

As my Fw190 approached a ground area filled with those nice war machines, the stutters and fps degradation started :-/

- I would like to suggest that editions of "with controllable tanks" and "without controllable tanks" versions of MP servers could be available...

- Since at the forums the threads now mix both types of vehicles, I would suggest the creation of sub-forums for airplane only and tanks only threads...

It's nice to have them, and it's certainly important to attract more potential users and support for this great simulation platform, but I am here 100% for the flight component, and would like to be able to avoid the strain of having tanks in the fields...

I would also like to add that I fear those additional ( maybe precious ) cycles being spared on tank simulation and control will certainly ( even as much as it can be optimized... ) borrow some of those cycles from the flight / flight systems / flight damage sections of the simulation - I just hope that doesn't translate to any sort of relaxation for those components...

I would hold my breath awhile JCOMM and see how things develop over the next 1 - 2 updates.

The fact that performance seems to have taken af hit only in MP, which is what I hear folks complain about, tells me that it's propably a problem with the dserver software, which can no doubt be optimized. The devs have stated repeatedly, that the tank models are much less of a performance hog than the planes, be they AI or player controlled, so having lots of people in tanks on a server as opposed to planes, should really not lower performance, quite the opposite.

If it's a persistent problem, I suspect a hotfix is coming, otherwise count on the coming updates to no doubt optimize performance of the tanks.

DED Normal server was always quite taxing when there was a large furball.

With addition of tanks it's a slideshow now.

Let's hope for some improvements.

Apart from massive FPS drop , I had some fun bombing tanks and watching the battle.

Thx guy for your thoughts :-)

I enjoyed it too ;-), but I'm and FDM nut so, flight dynamics above all in a flightsim for me, and I always want to reserve the best share of simulation cycles to it ....  But it's most probably a problem with the Server itself, and not the simulation cycles now that we have tanks competing with the rest of the simulated objects and features...

We recovered a pretty decent network MP behavior in the 1.104 and all is down again and regressing with the 1.105.

Approaching Tanks, Boats, Bombers (or multi seats vehicle, AI or Human) is a painful experience.

We all invested in a plane simulator and a clear priority should be given to FPS, fluidity and gameplay in the air. Opening to a wider range of ground vehicle could be smart for some people but the focus on performance of flying stuff should be THE priority for a flight sim. Devs and marketing should be wise enough to wait until they have a robust network code before introducing such consuming resources.

In the meantime, it would be welcome if populated Servers mixing tanks with aerial stuff could lighten their missions ... and keep the tanks away from the hot spots...

Any word on adding some dedicated tank protection in the form of a controllable 'Whirlwind' AAA vehicle. Would love to jump in that and give out some hurt in MP...   :)

Also longest tank kill from the Zeiss tank optic page:

'The longest confirmed kill to our knowledge was 14 kilometers. It was shot by an 88 Flak in the desert war vs. the British forces.'

Makes the 4km range of modern SABOT seem a bit tame... :)

Well, just a short follow and THUMBS Up!

Just came from an extraordinary online session at the Expert DED server, with tanks and planes, and no stutters were experienced!  Actually a very smooth overall experience.

The only difference from my yesterday's session was that I upgraded to the latest Nvidia drivers ( I'm on win 10 Pro 64 bit and upgraded to their 359.00 WHQL ).

Also made a difference, for better, in Prepar3d v3 running the PMDG 777 and Active Sky Next with a sky full of convective clouds.

Another difference is that I installed *** ONLY *** the graphics driver - no sound, physx, 3d or experience drivers, and, of course, made a clean install...

I hope they make a new sub-section. The last thing I'd want, is people all these threads complaining about tanks in a flight simulator.

 controllable 'Whirlwind' AAA vehicle.

They should leave that crap to War Thunder,  the AI AAA and fighters are dangerous enough as it is.

Attacking moving tanks is challenging, especially when player tanks are actually moving and hiding in trees and along buildings. Which means attack aircraft have to circle a few times, spot an enemy, and line up a shot all while being pelted by AI AAA/enemy fighters. Player controlled AAA would be stupidly easy.

Whirlwind didn't come out until 1944 anyway.
