Cybermat47 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I found this footage just now. It's amazing that the footage was captured, but the footage itself is heartbreaking. I've put it in spoilers because of graphic content.
Bando Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Wow, that's some nasty stuff there. Unbelievable the Sherman tank cdr got out. He must have been in great pain or had some sort of adrenaline rush to get out. Creepy to watch it. 1
Cybermat47 Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 Wow, that's some nasty stuff there. Unbelievable the Sherman tank cdr got out. He must have been in great pain or had some sort of adrenaline rush to get out. Probably adrenaline. It's the body's way of keeping us alive - the more shock and/or pain we're under, the more adrenaline to boost our muscles. The fact that he had enough adrenaline to pull himself out of the tank that quickly with only one leg gives a faint idea of what he must've been going through. R.I.P. sir. Creepy to watch it. Absolutely. We've read so much about what happened in WWII, but it's unreal to see such raw, uncensored footage of it actually happening.
Jaws2002 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 That's a very popular film. One of the rare clips capturing the M-26 Pershing in combat during ww2. Here's a nice article with a lot of detail about the engagement: http://www.anicursor.com/colpicwar2b.html I'm not that certain about the conclusion they draw in that article, about the fate of the German crew. They didn't all die in the engagement. I read an interview with one of the surviving Panther crew.
Jaws2002 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 That film was heavily used as propaganda, for a long time, making that engagement, the most publicized individual tank duel of ww2.
1CGS LukeFF Posted November 23, 2015 1CGS Posted November 23, 2015 That film was heavily used as propaganda, for a long time, making that engagement, the most publicized individual tank duel of ww2. Propaganda? The war in Europe was nearly over at that point. 1
Trooper117 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I was taught over and over... as soon as you hit with an APDS or HESH round, you plaster the tank with coax (Machine gun), because the crew was not allowed to escape... It might sound harsh, but it takes a long time to train a really good crew. Every time we were engaging any hard target, as the commander I always stuck to that rule. The coaxial mg gets anyone trying to bail out. war is not fun! 1
indiaciki Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) I really think that everybody should read Remarque's "All quiet on the western front" and watch "Paths of Glory" & "Nuit et brouillard" Edited November 24, 2015 by indiaciki
Jaws2002 Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) Propaganda? The war in Europe was nearly over at that point. The actual war, yes. The propaganda barely started. Edited November 24, 2015 by Jaws2002
1CGS LukeFF Posted November 25, 2015 1CGS Posted November 25, 2015 The actual war, yes. The propaganda barely started. Great, then show some examples of how that film "was heavily used as propaganda, for a long time".
