The BOS Definitive Guide to Graphical Settings

Recommended Posts

Sorry if may have disappointed with the thread title but I'm LOOKING FOR the subject...  Maybe you are too...  Been out of simming 8 years and getting back in here this month and want to make the transition back as frustration free as possible...

I see there are 2 threads in this sub forum that address settings:  "1920 x 1080" (which I have too), and the one on "issues since 1.104".  The 1920 seems to drift off into space near the end (as of today), and the other thread raises more questions than it answers...

So, looking for some "definitive" explanations of the following for a GTX 970 FTW+  (CPU is 4770k)

What settings should be controlled by BOS (INSIDE the sim graphical menu)?

What should I be using in the NVidia control panel for global vs application controlled?

How about NVidia inspector?  That looks like some way to get even more detailed on controls than the NVidia control panel?  Do folks here find it useful?

My first impression of the sim was that it is beautiful aside from the shimmering effects that I need to get out of there...  Looking to maintain 60fps if at all possible on the summer/fall maps but will go down into the mid 40s to get IQ up...

Has anyone of the sim/PC tweak gurus tried to put something together for the community?

Thanks all for your help!!!

Not sure about any comprehensive guide, but as a quick note for you to get rid of your shimmering, use nVidia Inspector to set sparse grid supersampling to at least 2x (4x if your rig can handle it, but the performance hit can be pretty high and 2x work well enough for me).

Welcome back to simming!

I have GTX970 with 1920x1080 and I use pretty much default settings in Nvidia CP and it has been working well. Only Power management mode is set to maximum performance. Ingame I use full settings.

As for shimmering, take a look of this post: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/18882-terrain-aliasing-issues-1104/?p=297951

4x sparse grid supersampling eliminates it completely but there is a performance hit in certain situations. 2x reduces shimmering but not removing it completely.

Still not clear to me whether I should make ingame settings, settings in NVidia Control Panel and NVidia Inspector parallel at the same time. Would be appriciated very much indeed, if there was a graphics expert who could say a word to this point.

For IL2 Classic I remember there was a detailed tip for Radeon Settings including conf.ini-settings...

For the most part it's not necessary to go into things like Nvidia Control panel for any game. They're designed to run on default settings there. Only occasionally depending on your taste or setup is it worthwhile. The most common things I've seen NCP used for in BoS are this sparse grid SS mentioned above or maybe setting a DSR value. BoS made it easy with only a few presets in the game so just pick one that runs well.

If you are looking for more fine tweaking of graphics details, then using the Nvidia control panel will give that to you. Nothing wrong with going in there and experimenting with it, just make the changes to your BOS profile in the control panel, and it will only apply to BOS. Very easy to restore defaults as well.

You can use it to enhance your graphics over and above what the BOS settings will give you, of course some at the expense of frame-rates as well.

Nivdia Inspector - if you really want to dig in deeper and unlock even more capabilities. Inspector overrides what you set in the control panel, so no need to use both, just one or the other.

If you are not that familiar with the control panel, I would start there. Some prefer to fly rather than spend time playing with different graphics settings, in this case just set in the BOS GUI and fly ( leave control panel at default).

I suppose every serious flight simmer tries to get as much eye candy he can and so will be interested in graphic settings. ;-)

Thanks for all your hints. I#m quite familiar with the NCP but as far as I know, Bos doesn't not supply us with an opportunity for AF settings ingame, so one has to set them with NCP or the inspector.
