HagarTheHorrible Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Sometime ago I bought an SSD, thinking it might make a difference in RoF, particularly the initial loading of the game. Unfortunately it didn't seem to make much difference, if any at all, the loading stayed resolutely at about 40 seconds. I have to admit I was surprised that an SSD had no impact. Since then, work on BoS , has led to an improvement of load times in RoF. Is this because RoF now utilises SSD's in a way that it didn't before or is it just an optimisation of the code and consequently RoF and BoS still won't possibly make best use of SSD's ?

Nope, dont have a SSD and the loading time went better here as well. Best, Allons!

Won't make any difference to loading times. Loading times in RoF improved due to optimisation of the code during BoS development. Nothing to do with SSD's.
Matt Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 For me, the update only improved the loading time till the menu screen. The SSD improved the actual mission loading time. Overall, the SSD made the much bigger difference in my case.
SYN_Vorlander Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 It's like this, If you bought and ssd thinking that it would improve ROF or any other game it's true. A SSD ensure there are no micro loading times during gameplay. Some might think that the stutters during game play is from the graphics card while playing but it's from HD loading time during game play. SSD ensures optimal loading times during gameplay and not optimization of the code of ROF or BOS. 2

Nothing to do with SSD's. Strange, I have always heard that was the main advantage to using SSD's with gaming - much improved loading times... versus improved in game performance. I have no experience to date with an SSD however , will be doing a new build last half of Dec that will have two of them, anxious to see for myself.
Dutch2 Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 (edited) Also nothing here using a SSD on RoF. Guess some members see advantage because they do also a complete Win reinstal. Edited November 8, 2013 by Dutch2
SeaW0lf Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Also nothing here using a SSD on RoF. Guess some members see advantage because they do also a complete Win reinstal. I did a fresh install of Windows in a Corsair GS and I didn't see any improvement when loading ROF missions, but it might have some relation to the startup time, which before took the same time with or without an SSD. This might be something that only the devs can explain.
OBT-Psycho Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 In my point of view, SSD would increase the performance of your overall config. There is no point getting an SSD ONLY to play RoF. The improvement we had was on optimization of the system and its workflow, so not user's hardware related. That being said, I bought an SSD a year ago, I won't step back to HDD for anything. everything looks so quick now

SYN_Vorlander Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I play ROF on 2x SSD in RAiD 0. There are no micro loading times during the game play. If you run ROF from a HD you will notice it.
piero_tasso Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Someone should post a link about the code improvements in ROF due to BOS works. And here it is, from Zak: Also releasing this new version we present you the first gift from the IL-2: BOS project. We managed to optimize the loading procedures for in-game objects and modules and applied it to ROF. Thus, loading from the start and to the main menu screen has been decreased by more than 10 times. We hope that it's just the first step in discovering and applying new knowledge and technologies into both projects , and a whole lot of new bright ideas are awaiting. http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=38671#wrapheader Thus not excluding the other advantages of SSD.
