I'm using GFE to make a video and noticed the mp4 file size is about 500MB. Is there a way to reduce the size of the file? Thanks.

Most high-quality videos will be extremely big right off the bat.

There are some ways to compact them such as rendering them in another format using third-party software, or slightly reducing the resolution to meet the needs without going overboard in size.

If it's OK to ask, what exactly do you plan to do with the video (keep it, upload it raw to YT, etc.), and in what way does the big size present a problem (i.e. low storage on your computer, takes too long to upload and so on)? Then it's easier to give you some more solid advice on how to solve this. :)

I plan to keep the video. Just wanted to have the smallest size possible to conserve disc space on an external HD. I appreciate your help. :)

To spare your disk space, I found this: http://blogs.it.ox.ac.uk/adamweblearn/2013/10/how-to-compress-large-video-files-without-losing-quality-using-handbrake/

I've never tried it myself so I don't know how it works, but this seems like the best solution in this case. If you have some video editing software on your computer (like Sony Vegas for example) you can use that to convert it instead, but the above solution should do the trick.

Another alternative is to upload some stuff on Google Drive or equivalent and delete the file from your computer whenever you need the space, but the limit there is of 15 GB in total unless you have a paid subscription.

Perfect. That's exactly what I need. Thanks. I good analogy is with my screenshots where I use Irfanview to change bmp files to jpg. Saves a lot of space. Appreciate the help.

Yep. Just used it. Works wonderfully. File changed from 400 to 98MB. Thanks for the help.

Glad it helped! I've had enough trouble keeping a 300GB HD from filling up before getting myself a 500GB external drive so shrinking videos was a must.

Out of curiosity, after converting did you see any noticeable changes to the video quality?

Posted

No. Not at all. Quality was as fine as the original. Thanks again.

Sorry I'm just getting back to you. Busy day.

BTW-I lied. I looked back and that original file size was 433MB, not 400. So going to 98MB is obviously a huge improvement.

Appreciate all your help. :)

No problem and wow, that's some impressive compression :o: My turn to thank you, I am now off to shrink some videos
