How IL2 stats is ruining multi-player gameplay

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello!

First thing, it is not a rant against il2 stats itself, which is very well made, and interesting because it allows you to have an online "career"

Since the introduction, on server running stats, I feel an impressive increase in insult and harsh language....

More, a lot of behaviour completely breaking immersion, .... Sadly for a flight Sim of this quality :

-suicide straffing

-kamikaze... Taran (way too much to be realistic)

-ten plane chasing a stalling and flaming aircraft to "steal the kill"

-players shooting parachutes to kill their opponents....

-players disconnecting to avoid death (including some of the top scoring players of the server.... Witnessed it myself.)

Those behaviour were present a year ago.... But from what I remember far less.

To be honest : even in war thunder behaviour of players is more realistic.... Because when a player loose his plane, it is gameover

This is really sad that the open multi-player scene if a Sim of this quality drop this far down into the worst behaviour of gaming.... :(

Maybe if stats consider only the best streak without dying to determine point to it would be better.... Or just the current streak, any death resetting points to zero... ?

Same as it's always been.  Maybe it ruins it for those that care about it.

There was behavior like that long anyone started collecting stats.

Stats are definitively enhancing my bos experience :)

Playing more carefully, fighting till the end when damaged to fly back to the front line, ... it makes the game more intense to me.

Also damaged planes fly home now !

I don't say I dislike stats, I just say that it changed behaviour on some players, making game more unrealistic ...

No it hasn't.  All that behavior was happening before anyone started collecting stats.  Hell, in RoF I've seen worse behavior when there were no stats.

Posted

Not sure stats are causing that behaviour.

It could be new players or many other things.

Your argument is pretty weak when it comes to showing causation.

It's been my experience that people who will dive into fights to steal a kill from someone are just as likely, or even more likely, to do it if stats are off.  On the other hand, people who care about not dying are more likely to avoid stupid behavior if stats are being recorded.

What I dislike it's the incensitive to fly the best plane it creates... I would like different stat for different planes

Taking care about not being killed is remedied by some players with disconnect feature   I witnessed that not long ago on that "most visited" server with 2 players I shot down from my peshka rear gunner post.Disconnected one by one in short sequence. But do I care? Not at all.If I see the audience of given server is out of my specs,I quit to join another.Thats the beauty of having choices ;)

Flying my 202.

Glued to a Yak.

Hammering away with my spaghetti shooters.

109 comes out of nowhere and smokes his engine.

I keep hammering.

Yak is now on fire.

+1 kill for dillon.

I get TK'd by said 109.

"Is a lesson, don't steal kills" -109 pilot.

You all probably know who this individual is, so no need to name him.

Needless to say I returned the favor the next time I saw him.

I feel like stat tracking encourages this behavior.  Completely unnecessary.

And less we forget the noodles that bee-line straight to the enemy airfields to rack up some low flying kills.  Class act.

I think it definitely changed the way some people play.

I was pursuing an He-111 from a distance. He dropped his bombs and bailed out. He finished with ~150 ground kills for 0 deaths.

I've flown German bombers enough to know that is impossible to have 0 deaths for the whole 3 hours if you care about returning to the airfield that is.

It's funny to notice how worried people get when the stats aren't working and everything's a zero across the scoreboard.

To me, stats became irrelevant the day a friend of mine said "No, I won't fly X or Y plane, it will mess up my stats."

This is why in CloD and BoS I usually fly the Hurricane, I-16, LaGG-3 and P-40, not just the Yak-1, Spitfire and Bf.109.

I try to fly as if I was flying in real life (I don't need stats to "motivate" me to do so). Some people not flying certain planes (like bombers or ground attack aircraft) are just missing out because of a false sense of god knows what.

A false sense of not wanting to be more like you, apparently.

I saw this kind of stuff when BoS multiplayer was first released, and I see it now.  It's always been normal to have clouds of friendlies rushing to "help" you with any smoking enemies, for example.  The ramming of attack aircraft when they're unable to produce a quick twitch kill is also VERY common(and pathetic) .

But I'd say that player behavior has improved in some ways, if anything.  At least now a large proportion of players can be seen to taxi to the runway and take off properly, or activate navigation lights before coming in to land. Whether it's improved character or fear of grass, I don't care. Many people acted like trash before BoS, and many continue to do so. It's the nature of man so I will take what I can get.

As to the subject of people who care disproportionately about stats on some obscure website, I can only speculate that they care mostly(entirely) for "Top Gun" jousting and not so much for the simulation of the WAR.

I think stats in a game like this are redundant.  Personally, I think stats for a flight sim are flat out stupid.  It brings out selfish and unrealistic behavior aka Blonde Knights flying to 8km and bouncing Reds thinking people are jacking off to their K/D.  I personally could not care less about such things.  But that's just me.

Look at Arma....no stats and that simulation has some of the most selfless, fun, and enjoyable people in any gaming community that I've come across.

Then the problem must be the community, because there is plenty of d-bag behavior on servers with stats shut off.

If stats weren't important to this community, Wings of Liberty wouldnt be the only populated server to play.

I dont think WoL is populated because of the stats, just saying...

I dont see the logic. Care to elaborate?

I'm just going off the assumption that it's the only server that keeps track of your stats.

The popularity of WoL comes back to the early days of BoS, when there were very few servers, and WoL was one of the first to do some semi-historical missions with expert settings. Thats what I think anyways.  :salute:

There is a new one, can't remember the name, it's all in upper case, and it doesn't have the navigation icon on the map! :-D

FIGHTING LEGENDS is the name you're looking for.

To be honest, I actually like the stats. I like to go back and look at my sorties to see how bad my aim was. Does it screw with how the game should be played? Yes, I was going after a kill when I neglected to cover my wingman and he got killed. Sorry Dendro!

I didn't know we even had stats.  Not those fleeting numbers you see when you hit the tab button?  They hardly seem worth worrying over.

I think when you die online you should be banned from the server forever. That is hardcore  :P

You also should respect the turn around time to rearm and refuel of 1 hour to take off again to avoid 500 kills in one week.

Limited to 1 or 5 sorties a day due to supplies limitation. We should have night time on servers too.

Wounded pilots should go home for 3 months to recovery.

All these points have been happening since the first hook-up from computer to computer. Years ago you couldn't even get off the runway in some HyperLobby games, nothing ever changes or will.

More seriously a 5-10 minute timer when you die before taking a new aircraft would make sense :) .... A 20 minutes for friendly fire....

Dying or bailout above enemy line should also reset your "kill count" to zero...

No need to be extreme to add realism and punish stupid behaviour :)

I think as you mature...stats mean less and less.  It's like running....I used to care to the last second..time, distance, pace.....Now...heck, who cares?  Personally...I like to stay alive in what looks like a dangerous situation...help a buddy, take out a ground target....every now and then push the danger zone a bit, but always with the goal of coming back to base.  If you have to game the game......you only bring dishonor to yourself.....because in the end, people take note of the players that have no class, and who wants those stats with that kind of reputation?

Problem is people less mature.... Like 3 109 diving on an already flaming pe-2, loosing 1000 meters doing so.... To steal the kill, instead of staying high and covering their teammate engaging the pe-2...

This behaviour just make me want to shoot down everyone.... Court martial on field, and sentence applied immediately :)
