New system build feedback

Hey folks,

I'm nearly to the point where my old Core i7 870 has seen better days. Recently my system has been increasingly unstable and its probably gotten to the point where it's soaked up too many gaming hours and too many power surges from some of the crazy weather around here over the last few years. Long story and not the point. I'm building a new rig to survive another 5 years of game playing and I thought I'd run this past you guys and ask for any feedback. I'm mostly sold on this setup but I'm open to ideas too.

Intel Core i5-6600 Quad-Core Processor
ASUS Z170-A Socket 1151 Intel Z170 Chipset
Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 2400MHz CL14
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 Superclocked 2GB GDDR5
Corsair RM Series 650W 80PLUS Gold Certified Power Supply
OCZ ARC100 240gb
Fractal Design R5

Hoping this runs BoS/BoM with far better results than what I get right now. Any thoughts?

I would only say go with the 970 instead. Its a little bit more but worth it. The 960 is an updated 760, and I had a 760 before, so this is where its coming from.

I agree, but i think the price difference is a little bit bigger than most people tend to think. In the Netherlands the difference is still around 150 euro's.

Other than that, it looks like a good choice.

You will soon wish you had more than the 2GB of Vram on the 960 the 970 is abetter choice for a "balanced" set up with that 6600 i5

I had thought about the GTX 970 as I was initially leaning that way but the price on these are ridiculous. The best price I can get for a GTX 960 is $229 (Canadian) and they go up to about $315. The best price I can get for the GTX 970 is $409 but that's with a rebate - most of them are priced at $475ish Canadian. So I'm thinking I'll have to make do with the 960... otherwise it eats up too much of the budget.

It's a shame nVidia doesn't have something in between the two cards.

The other possibility is to try and make my GTX 570 go a little bit longer and then see what comes out that is new later on. Any good rumours over that?

I've been reading about this too... I've got a 1920x1200 monitor which is slightly better but similar to the typical 1080p gaming setup. Most of the benchmarks I've seen suggest that now and in the immediate future that 1080p gaming doesn't see any benefits from going up to 4gb of VRAM. But I could be missing something. What do you think?

In my case, I prefer to pay in a good graphic card, than to pay in one new CPU.

Z97, with a i5 4690k with OC, 8gb DDR3 CL9 and invert in GPU (GTX970 or AMD R9 3xx)

In my case, I have this PC:

- I5 4690k with Z97 motherboard. I'm applying 4,5ghz with 1,2vocre + air cooling.

- GTX970

- 8gb DDR3 CL9 1866mhz

Within 6 years, what do you think that I'll need to change? CPU or GPU?

If your answer it's "GPU", maybe you can decide to purchase a Z97 base (CPU/MOTHERBOARD/DDR3), and invert the difference of price in GPU.

For your info, I'm using a 1200p, but in Il2 BoS I can apply 1600p, AA4x, Ultra preset, SSAO OFF, HDR OFF and 4x of distance of vision. No problem of perfomance, the sim goes very smooth (and all games that I have). If not, only I need to change the GPU and maybe increase a little bit my OC, that I can with water cooling, over 4,6ghz without problems.

In any case, the config that you explain at the begining is very good

In 6 years I'll have replaced the whole lot.

Makes it sense, to change a Geforce 760 graficcard in to a Geforce 960?

My CPU is a i7 4790k.

I would say, not really. You will see same. Edited by roaming_gnome

I say no,...GTX960 overclocked to 1500core/8000mem is on GTX770 level in some newer games, but overall for flight sims you dont see much if any difference.

if you want buy GTX960 ,definitely buy 4gb version, you can use much more than 2gb vram in most never games even with GTX960 and still get 60fps+(gta5,F1 2015,FarCry 4 etc)those games use almost 3gb+ on my GTX960 4gb.

And what if I change my Geforce 760 to a Geforce 970?

Thanks for answering

Going by the benchmarks you'll see a big difference in performance between the 760 and the 970. Between the 760 and the 960 there is an improvement but not one that would justify the price you'll be paying.

I see your point. I'll price that configuration out too.

The one thing that I have to think about, however, is that after 3-4 years I can easily replace my graphics card but I can't do the same with the CPU because the motherboard/RAM/etc. will probably all have changed. Its typically been easier to swap graphics cards than CPUs so I've tended to front load on nearly the most powerful CPU...

And BOS does seem to be CPU constrained on my system. The AI bogs it down masssively.

Yeah I agree. I would always get the strongest CPU because it's the more difficult component to replace. Swapping out a graphics card is easy. Putting in a new CPU/MB is much harder.

Yes,i also agree...especially for flight sims, strongest CPU is always great thing. In your case the best setup for flight sims will be i5 6600K and GTX960 4gb,so i will be put more money to the overclockable CPU and less in the GPU.

Also at least from what I see lately. CPUs just don't increase with power by that much from year to year. So a strong CPU today will be good for many years to come.

Graphics cards on the other hand seem to grow in power exponentially. Just 3 years ago a strong GPU was 2GB. Now there are some games for which that's actually the minimum spec. So that's where I would allow room for growth in the system.

Definitely go GTX970.

shamrock i'd definitely go for the better gpu. I think that the extra 130$ is worth it

I have the same CPU and Mobo as you coupled with the R9 390 (same price as gtx 970).

All flight sims run at >80fps with ultra settings.
