North American Server Proposal

I had a similar post very early in BOS Early Access but I think I'd like to approach it again with BOM on the horizon.

So,

If I have a bit of cash to throw around, where would I start if I wanted to get a NA server up and running?

I'd need a server and a mission maker to start.

How much for a high end server rental in the central United States, probably Texas for accessibility?

I'm thinking of starting a server that is a more difficult Normal. Something to bridge the gap between full-on Normal and full real Expert. A few aids but de-tuned considerably - particularly icon distances - to make it more difficult to spot and enable bounces but still not be full hardcore. I haven't decided if it should be a DF server, semi-historical (or a hybrid there as well, such as; limited plane sets on some maps but mostly DF) or mission based.

I'd also like to use it as a basic flight school on one or two days a week to teach the basics for new pilots. I'm no experten but can get around fine and enjoy teaching. (At least one more IP other than myself.)

I'd look for an advanced IP or two, as well, to teach me and others the finer points of advanced ACM.

Anyone know a good mission maker with idle hands and time to burn?

I don't believe they are customisable currently. ON/OFF only.

Hmm, that sucks then. Wanted to reduce the distance to 3k and/or turn them light gray for all. Make spotting and bounces more important. Is it customizable in ROF?

I'd love a server that did everything like you said but allowed external views I don't really use them in combat but it's nice to look at the outside of the plane while your just cruising along and it makes it way easier to taxi, and spot traffic in the pattern.

WOW just mentioned this on the WOL post.

Why is there no NA equivalent of WOL yet?

Not enough NA players?I think not.

herrmurf, you might try to use the NEW WINGS training server for that training night that you mentioned. i dont know if you are familiar with NEW WINGS, but they have the training server and the full real server, both are north american. NW has duplicate concept servers for ROF(WW1), where they are most active. the ROF training server has had, for quite some time, a tuesday night fly-in where things like you describe happen, with good turnout.

...their full real ROF server is usually very busy also.

...they seem to leave the DF/normal servers to others. not sure why, but there are a couple/few of such that have very good reputation/turnout that are stiff competition.

.

interestingly, icons, somewhat restricted, can be 'imitated' with landing lights. good luck bouncing with ANY sort of icon, and that's why i dont care for them. they completely change the whole dynamic. even in an active dogfight they reduce the potential maneuver effectiveness. imho, they are a basic training tool.

.... and i hear even in ROF that they are a server setting with the options ON/OFF.

.... maybe a creative use of landing lights will suffice?

.

the NW wargrounds BOS server seems to be down after the last upgrade. i hear their mission maker is updating it with some summer/fall maps. but i also hear that they may welcome more mission makers/missions? not sure

.

anyways, you could contact fourspeed for more helpful info. it might be nice to have a team to share the load, and the NW guys have got the ball rolling already.

I like what you suggest but I'd go for no Icons CEM.  I am for externals on, makes for nice screenies.  You will need to get a good mission editor dude and give him remote access destop control so he can upload new mission builds at will.  That's the best way to have things stay fresh and not perpetually empty like all the other US servers.
