Blitzen Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Seriously ( disclaimer: I say this never having observed anyone else's game play in person with another stick but only watching vids..)even with a completely fresh install of current BoS, planes ( in particular most pronounced but not limited to German AC,) I am getting an awful lot of yo-yoing & circular rolling motion around the nose ( is that lateral?) axis in normal mode .As stated I have a FFB stick that is years old but works fine in Il-2 1946 & CloD.In vids the pilots seem not to have this problem while acquiring targets, while even the smallest corrections ( esp.rudder input) sends my plane into all sorts of necessary movement. As I said rudder ( yaw ) seems to be the worst: small input with or without ailerons input does not result in a 'turn" but in a wing drop & wobble.Correction with rudder just makes the plane do the same thing on the opposite side. Results I spray the sky all around the target but only if I get extremely lucky do I ever hit it.I'm a bit better following a target in a banked turn, pulling on the stick and not having to touch rudder pedal ( well on the stick I mean.)I am also experiencing an odd bump in approaching enemy AC:At a certain distance,no matter what my vector of approach ,I have a sudden violent nose swing.I'm flying straight & level concentrating on my target some distance away & wham!I get the nose both swinging left ( mostly )& dropping .This means I have to try to get steady again as I rapidly approach my target & this means rudder input that does as above :a crazed dance moving the stick very very slightly left & right -correct correct correct & in the meantime the target is gone & I've missed my shot. With bigger aircraft I get steadier flight from the FM as you might expect. Now I can correct much of this behavior by going to Custom & ticking off more rudder input & simpler physics, then viola better flight. That us pretty much all i have to do.In Normal I've tried fooling with the dead zones and other tricks all to no avail.I can fly a reasonably good & fun Quick mission or any of the 3rd party campaign & missions in Custom, but the BoS default campaigns must be flown in Normal mode & they drive me nuts...take off & landings are a b___tch and I've already described trying to hit a target in the air or even on the ground-nearly hopeless. I have tried an Extreme 3D stick once but it wasn't any better & I returned it. My question is this all normal? Is this happening to everyone with every stick? If so I'll quit gripping , but please ...for the love of god...if someone is flying with steadier FMs than I apparently have can you tell me how & with what? Thanks!
Dakpilot Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Although you have obviously experimented with this, I include instructions for others as well, Page 21/22/23 of the manual explain how to adjust sensitivity and deadzones, a little deadzone and sensitivity curve on the rudder will help a lot, try as much as 50% sensitivity 10% deadzone to start, and experiment from there, same with other axis (but less). A small deadzone will really help with a twist stick rudder to cancel out unintentional inputs (and other axis) and help with aiming experiment with a bit of noise filter under input devices as well to reduce sensitivity As a user of MSFFB2 I found using curves and deadzones to satisfactorily adjust things to get decent and accurate control using normal physics and no aids, Also don't use the aids and practice (a lot ) further effect of yaw/rudder is roll, always try to fly co-ordinated, I.E with ball in centre of turn and slip indicator Cheers Dakpilot
simplyjames Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 In game set the sensitivity on the stick to 80% see how that does for you? That helped me a ton but i toned it down to 60% since i was so used to a jumpy stick.
andyw248 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Since the OP mentions the option of replacing the joystick: I use a Warthog with a 15cm stick extension, and most aircraft feel solid like a brick even in light turbulence. There have been topics about this, search for "stick extension".
Blitzen Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Thanks guys. Before I purchase a new stick.I'll play with sensitivity,if I can find it.In "Input "Devices ,I only find "sensitivity" for Mouse. I've had FFB enabled & pushed both levels to 100% - are these the ones to push back to 60-80%? I've had them up in hopes eventually I'd get ground effects( bumps , bounces etc.),but that has not been my experience so far. Could big sideways lurch approaching targets be because of setting these sliders too far to the right? Are stick extensions readily available or have to be homemade ? I imagine the mounts/platforms have to be specially constructed?
Dakpilot Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Input devices - is where you find noise filter, this effects all axis Sensitivity (curves) and deadzones is under - Controls - click graph icon leave FFB at 100% if anything this will smooth inputs, ground effects FFB not implemented yet May be worth calibrating joystick in windows just to confirm all is ok Cheers Dakpilot
Blitzen Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) Many many thanks Guys.I bought this sim on day one & I have never had Normal settings run as normal.I have just briefly flown the 190 ( one of the worst handling planes I have tried to fly in the past,)this time with new settings you have suggested:80% sensitivity in all controls & about 10% dead zone in center. You know what? I actually could line up on a gun run on a Russian truck column & I came close to hitting most of them ( come on guys it was only a brief test..) Your advice was spot-on! I may just weld the settings in or then again play a bit more with them? Thanks again!!! Edited October 29, 2015 by Blitzen 1
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I have had an MS FFB for years and still love it. I tried a Logitech 940 but had to send it back for overheating and didn't replace it. Although I have an FFB I use a separate set of rudder pedals. I do however have a 30% sensitivity on the Pitch Control for the FFB with Dead Zones at zero. I found this stopped over input on my part in turns and thus dumping the plane.
Blitzen Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 I have had an MS FFB for years and still love it. As I said in earlier post thesechanges have made a world of difference in game play and although "flying" & scoring is more problematic than in Custom settings ,its still great fun.I am glad I didn't weld in initial dead zone settings because I am still trying to fine tune them for all aircraft.I found that 12% settings on all axises worked just fine ( or sort of just fine) on fighter aircraft, but flying the Stuka was ,well diffeerent .That plane wouldn't complete a level turn until it reached Moscow! Only kidding ,but it was completely unresponsive to almost all bank & turn input.Reducing dead zones on all axiis's helped get it around the circuit, but going back to the 109F I found I had to go back & increase Yaw(turn) deadzone a bit to get it back to a mangable level. It may be that each plane requires me to adjust things a bit-have you others found this to be trueor is there a gold setting that seems to be the best for all aircraft, and I still can't figure out why rudder input seems to be the real culpret fo me here even with a coordinated turn? I am trying to remember my brief adventure in flight scholl in a Cesna 150 ( ok ok not a Messerschmitt) and how it behaved using just rudder & rudder & ailerons.I remenber flat turns were dicouraged ,but for the life of me cannot remember what happened if you tried them? Maybe there was some wobble as evidenced here ,but I can't really remember -it was quite a while ago. Thanks to your suggestions ,all aspects of the sim are far more playable, and I am very grateful. Now if only the builders of this eye candy filled sim could only get game play up to the standard ( dare I say) Cliffs of Dover ( true confession :I fly with "Stalls turned off."..)which has missions with almost countlless planes ,and great SP missions & involving Campaigns AND gives you results on ALL missions .Admittedly most have come from third parties and if the initial evidence here is true most of the new missions here ( while in the frozen Winter of Russia -which I am more than a little glad to see go away) are third party as well.I'd really like to see someone like Veterean ( or really:Disastersoft, but ther's little chance for him to do so..) put together a semi- historic campaign on one of these new maps and make it avaiable in different versions for different powered PC's. Ok off the soapbox...
