pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Any one managed to sink a boat with canon fire?
Trinkof Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Just making they smoke black.... I don't know if they end up sinking after.
pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Yes, thats allI can manage too. Couldnt even do it in a Stuka mit der 2 biggenboombangs.
Tyberan Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I've poured heaps of cannon into them with no affect. However one cool thing I noticed is, I skip bombed and misjudged the distance. The bomb skip just over the ship then exploded. It took out all of its guns, but it was still afloat.
Finkeren Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Couldnt even do it in a Stuka mit der 2 biggenboombangs. That actually doesn't seem odd to me. The BK 37 uses AP ammo only. If you emptied the entire ammo supply into a ship, at best you'd make 30 minor holes in the hull, destroy the engine or puncture the boiler. The ship would take in a lot of water and would likely be immobilised, but it definately wouldn't sink right away.
pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 I got it smoking but it continued on down the river just as fast.
kendo Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) I had an incredible experience last night against the boats in a quick mission. Was attacking them along with a wingman using bombs and cannon. On the first pass my wingman left one ship smoking (it subsequently sank) while my bomb missed the target. Coming around for another appoach I saw my wingman already lined up and diving on the second boat raking it with cannon fire and causing it to start smoking. I then attacked hitting it with cannon fire and missing again with a bomb! Made a third pass and got well lined up pounding it with cannon and machine guns. When I was really close in there was a sudden and enormous explosion that I couldn't avoid flying right into. It destroyed my plane (!) and ended the mission. Afterwards I was asking myself what happened (!?!) - a real sense of disbelief and surprise. I wish I had recorded a track. Awesome. (note: I was flying a Lagg (not a strictly historically correct scenario I know) with the 37mm cannon, mixed ammo and Fab-50 bombs) Edited October 29, 2015 by kendo
pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Just tried it with an IL2 with rockets and the 23mm canons. Sunk one with the rockets and got the other one smoking in 2 places and dead in the water with the canons, but it didnt sink.
kendo Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) Just to note: my targets yesterday were the large barge-type boats. Tried the same quick mission again today and this time got the smaller gunboats. Sank one with near misses from bombs. It caught fire, then slowly capsized before sinking, ending with the bow sliding into the water vertically. Very cool. Edited October 29, 2015 by kendo
pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Havent come across anything except the big barges so far.
Elem Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I hate to sound negative or nit-picky as the latest update with new maps including boats has been so fantastic. Especially as I have been asking for these for the part year or so. However, the only boat traffic I have seen so far has been along the Volga not across it. Should we not see a constant flow of small craft going between the East and West banks with men and materials. Has anyone seen this? The link gives details of where this was happening. http://www.stalingrad.net/russian-hq/the-volga-crossings-during-the-battle/rusvolgacrossings.html
Feathered_IV Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Haven't seen any barges yet. So far its been the paddle steamers and the ML's with the Katyusha rockets. Managed to bomb one and scour the other with cannon, but didn't sink any with guns alone. Below is my bomb victim. My own tumbling wreck can be seen just hitting the water behind the gun turret... 1
pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Bit odd that different people are getting different boats, I have yet to see the paddle steamer or the gun boats or the motor launches with the rockets. Are we all in QM?
71st_AH_Mastiff Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 the algorithm probably needs tweaking.

kendo Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Yes QM for me. Seems they are using some random function to vary which type appears.
Finkeren Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I havent seen either the paddle steamer (my personal favourite from the teaser screen shots) or the rocket launcher boats but I have seen and sunk both the large barges (with and without AAA defense - those with guns you can sink with MGs alone by blowing up the guns) and the smaller patrol craft with the T-34 turret on the fore.

You're forgetting that these things will be passing through the ship's superstructure (and in some instances, through members of the crew) before exiting out the bottom of the hull. That means most if not all of the projectiles will be deflected to some extent and yaw off their normal flight path and in some instances tumble or end-up sideways or backwards or in bits, before striking the internal plating on the hull. So, the damage to the hull may in all probability vary from small holes causes by the projectile penetrators to large gaping tears measuring 30-50 cm in length and maybe 50 mm across - or more. Are we all in QM? Are at least 3 types of boat in QM. A steam pad A gun boat A barge. You can "kill" the crew of these AA guns on deck.

True, that's why I said "minor holes" and not "3.7cm holes" but unless a projectile tumbles exactly right to create a long tear in the bottom, the holes are still gonna be relatively small. It might still sink the boat, but that might take hours, and we're unlikely to even notice in the short time span we're above the target. 1
Uufflakke Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 In this video the paddle steamer got badly hit in the middle and besides a huge explosion, black smoke and flames steamer does not sink. Or not yet. Hard to make out in this clip. At 00:44 a gunboat runs throught the side of the paddle steamer without causing any damage to both ships.
Wulf Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 ".......we're unlikely to even notice [if the ship is sinking due to cannon fire] in the short time span we're above the target." Yes, that's true.
migmadmarine Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I presume that the gunboats spawn in QM if you have AA turned on, and the barges spawn with AA turned off.
kendo Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I had AA on both times I tried it and got barges one time and gun-boats next.
pilotpierre Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 I will continue to live in hope for a gun boat and paddle steamer. Uufflakke, whats all the green and red stuff in the video?
Finkeren Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I just tested the BK 37 against the 2 gun boats (the ones with the T-34 turret) I used HE-ammo and the effect was rather gruesome: 2 - 3 hits each and they were wrecked by a giant explosion and sank within a minute. With HE-rounds the BK 37 is devastating against ships, and they are so damn easy to hit compared to land vehicles. 2

Maybe switch to a different QM spot. I was using the 4x vs 4x selection when I encountered the steamers. The 1 vs 1 option next to it may be different. I tried it out and 2-4 hit with HE it will take it out. Edited October 30, 2015 by istruba
pilotpierre Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 Ah the penny finally dropped. Whenever we get a new a/c I turn AA off in QM so I can experiment without getting shot down. As soon as I turned it back on the very next mission had 2 gunboats. Still yet to see the paddle steamer, hopefully today it will make an appearance.
