Beagah Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Hi there people, first post here, through I´ve played IL 2 a lot some 5 years ago. Decided to buy this as it has a really promising future (plus on sale on Steam, yay!) however... It´s been a long time since I´ve played sims, so I need a new joystick. I´m also a bit lost on all the mouse and KB settings. So: 1- Which joystick you guys recommend? If possible between 25-100$ range but can buy better if really needed. A bit of problem I´m brazilian thus I might have to order a good one from the US, not easy to simply find and buy :/ 2- Do you recommend a setting with rudder? Which? 3- How do you setup the mouse and keyboard? 4- Is there a manual O.o seriously, didn´t find option in Steam... Many thanks in advance.
Sokol1 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) Wait the release of VKB Gladiator joystick line until the end of this year, will be the best option in your price range. http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/18545-vkb-and-stratojet-release-plans-q4-2015-2016/ If dont want wait the new model above, buy this "3in1" with "twist rudder" - is not "the best" - but what are available in your local market for ~65$. http://www.kabum.com.br/cgi-local/site/produtos/descricao.cgi?codigo=5589&origem=52&gclid=Cj0KEQjw5MGxBRDiuZm2icXX2-sBEiQA619bq-qmNbuIwLlIvsI3PgEoxU-hWFkBpbzdU5OHVa0O-DUaAoQB8P8HAQ A bit of problem I´m brazilian thus I might have to order a good one from the US, not easy to simply find and buy :/ Now the bad news, import one for there is most expensive that you can imagine: http://www.tributado.net/index.php In this case you "best" option is eBay. 216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I'm using a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS which costs around that. It has adjustable resistance, a ton of buttons, it's extremely comfortable and you have this nice thingy on the throttle that gives you an option instead of twist-rudder. I've had mine since February and it shows no sign of strain. The real reason this can be a great choice though is because it can be found under the US $50 limit, meaning RF won't kill you with taxes (at least that's how it used to work). I grew up in Brazil so I can relate to the struggle.

Beagah Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) Thanks for all replies, very useful. Problem with Gladiator line is that it probably is a quite limited edition, isn´t it? I´d prefer something that could be shipped from US (nothing against other places it´s just that ordering things from exotic places can be annoying. Example - my dad ordered a watch, and it took 5 months to arrive. Khy? Because it was held by customs as it was made on China, and we had to pay a fee...) But what I´m really curious about is rudder pedals, do you guys use it? Is it a big boost regarding playability or good joystick handles that well enough? Again any suggestions are welcome. I also have the philosophy of spending more on something that will last 5 years instead of one can pay more than 100$ if it´s good. Edited October 29, 2015 by Beagah

Hey there neighbour! i use the Logitech Extreme 3d pro and its the best cheap joystick there is, it is also probably available on your local market. on the matter of pedals, they do make a huge difference and that is coming from a guy who built his own XD One more thing youll need is TrackIR or Freetrack in my case! Ate logo! :D

Sokol1 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) Thanks for all replies, very useful. Problem with Gladiator line is that it probably is a quite limited edition, isn´t it? No is not limited edition like Mamba models, they promise regular production for this new model. This joystick was developed by simmers, use the on the best electronics available, is focused in BoS and WT market. BoS/BoM is difficult to fly with keyboard/mouse due lack of key for center rudder, unless you do only air start. They will be available to order in the US toohttp://www.gostratojet.com/ Stratojet sold online only for US and Canada - is stated in their policies page. Is not option for "rest of the world". Garanto que conheço as opções do seu mercado local, atualmente não tem praticamente nada, nem no ML. A opção - por falta de opção - é esse Logitech 3D. Qualquer duvida me pergunte no gavca.com. Beagah Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Yes, read that, it is a pity... but can´t blame them, it´s a niche market
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Although I used the Logitech 3D for many years (both the original and FFB models, between 2008 and 2013), I would recommend trying to find the TM one. On MercadoLivre there is a seller from RS letting it go for R$299,00. Both FFB Logitechs got too loose within a year, and the 3D Pro was really inaccurate after 2-3. The T-Flight HOTAS costs a little less than the 3D in the US, and it comes with the throttle which at least to me made a lot of difference and killed the need for a rudder so far. That way I can throw the stick around without messing with the rudder (I'm a rudder addict, so I'm biased here ) To exemplify the rudder thingy I'm talking about, here's a pic: 1
Beagah Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 TM always had a good reputation, indeed. Still speaking of "nearby" choices what about this one http://www.kabum.com.br/produto/57489/joystick-mad-catz-f-l-y-5-flight-para-pc-r21-mcb43302 I don´t know that brand
Sokol1 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Mad Catz is SAITEK , a "traditional" brand, that make reasonable medium cost joystick HOTAS (X-52, X-52 PRO, X-55) and Rudder Pedal (PRO, Combat). But in "entry-level" models dont show advantages that justify pay more, like in this ("Transformer") F.L.Y. 5 over the Logitech 3D PRO. Both - and the above suggested Tm HOTAS X suffer from the same evil: use low cost, low quality potentiometers, that with relative few use wear and produce spikes in axis response. Read more about there: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=883109&postcount=7 Bad for bad get the more cheap. I did not mentioned because dont see on sales there, but in "entry-level" joystick category ( this 3-in-1 that cost ~50$) what you should buy is Thrustmaster T.16000M. Only because this model dont use that potentiometers in X, Y axis, use contact less HALL sensor = no wear, no spikes, theoretically unlimited life span (is the same motive for recommend VKB joysticks over other "entry-level"). http://www.thrustmaster.com/pt_BR/products/t16000m My advise is, wait the next year and buy a VKB Gladiator from https://flightsimcontrols.com/ they send for "rest of the world" at reasonable shipping cost. Meanwhile you can have luck, two years ago Submarino make a good deal in Warthog joystick (standalone), sold be ~200$. Not even Amazon.com have such low price (for this stick). Beagah Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Following my epic to pew pew krauts in the virtual world where injuries don´t, happen I decided to buy this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CXYMFS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00 Please tell me I did a good choice Senpai! Anyway, between all the fees... the joystick, which is 50$, became mine for... 75 dollars? 100 dollars? Try... 150. Wouldn´t you guys love to live in a country desperate to get money through fees :/ The exchange rate Amazon gave was more than 4.11 reais per dollar, which was NOT nice either. Edited October 30, 2015 by Beagah
Sokol1 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) ~153$ (is price+shipping+~95% of fees over price+shipping) plus ~3$ for local post office agency. And be prepared to deal with "spikes" soon... Edited October 30, 2015 by Sokol1
