S.E.R.E. Graduates sound off! (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape)

Just want a head count of all of us who have made it through S.E.R.E or your country's equivalent.

S.E.R.E. - FASOGRULANT, Naval Station Brunswick, Maine - April 1999

Graduated and also made it through Cold Weather Survival.

I can remember every single second of that time. It was -20 DEG F and it was April! I'll never forget the mans face who first beat me. I remember when we had to strip naked in the snow. It was so surreal like you were watching TV in your head. The box I think was the worst. The end of the course was a time when I felt pride, anger and shame all at once. Those of you who have been through it know what I mean. I just started thinking about this because I heard someone with a Russian accent talking at the store when I was in line and when I walked outside the cold air bit me and I could smell a fireplace burning wood somewhere.

I'm glad learned some very valuable navigation skills. We learned how to trap food too and how to keep our trail cold. I still can hear my instructors words "The enemy is lazy". He didn't actually mean the enemy who is chasing your but rather laziness itself. He made sure we took the most difficult ways to our check points and that we stayed off the roads. We did however learn to cross them if we had too. I really hope I never ever have to taste water with iodine pills in it again, LOL.

SERE Training was classified in all respects, so I doubt anyone would have much to say about it.

Valuable training, but not for public consumption.

No offense but...

You should have gone to the public schools I did when I was a kid. EVERY day you were in a fight with some very mean people ! This went on for years. Best part is that it made me a very mellow person in the end, but it sucked. Made me appericate PEACE.

I'd rather take SERE training any time than to have to go through the horrible public school system we had/have !

And a crock of horse sh*t too from what I remember

Kind of depends upon which branch of the service provided your all expense paid SERE vacation. The length and scope varies widely, but I'm sure it is fun no matter what color uniform you wear while attending. ;)

Well I did once survive a 5 mile bicycle ride through heavy rain, evaded a pigeon flying straight towards me, on multiple occasions sucessfully resisted buying chocolate and just this evening once more escaped the clutches of the workplace.

Am I in?

For aircrew and non 11 Bravo types yes it necessary and at the least gives them a very very TINY glimpse of what could happen.

For the present conflicts the US involved in it is worthless, there are no POW's being held by the Iraqi's. As my younger told us, (Iraq war vet) they always planned to save the last bullet, or grenade for themselves, the alternative was too well known. They saw what the bad guys did to their own people on a daily basis, and fully expected worse if caught. That same thing hardened him/them towards the bad guys as well, and they never captured one alive. Fair is fair...

What amazed me is my kid only weighed 170lbs, carried 85lbs of body armour and gear, 25lbs of M 249 SAW and patrolled in 120F heat 6 days a week !

It's a little more than a tiny glimpse but you are right that is small but by no measure watered down. Don't forget your son was probably 170lbs of pure muscle. =o)
