Cold air boost Winter vs Summer

Recommended Posts

So, we know the Yak and the F-4 are faster in winter.

Has anyone tested the difference between the summer and winter maps yet?

I'm running some but it'd be good to compare data.

I have the same question?

Performance gain/loss is not necessarily aircrqft specific. The denser the air the more hourse power u will develops hence cold air equals more hp. Side note to that is the denser the air the more drag and lift there is so there is not necessarily always a performance gain. It depends really on how the power to drag ratio changes with density

Engines heat up faster, and stay hotter longer. More drag from the radiator flaps being open more, and for longer duration. Takes longer to cool down. Already seeing some performance impacts from that.

Testing this was possible for a long time now. You can set the temperature (and air pressure, if you want) in the mission editor and simulate summer conditions that way.

All planes have been faster in winter than they are in summer or autumn.

ZeHairy reported that in the game the FW190 did not get as much a boost as other planes did during winter... which in other words could mean the FW190 might be a more attractive plane during summer, relative to the other ones. Still too early to tell.

Did a quick test of the 190 and La 5 down on the deck.  Both appear to be about 40 km/h slower. (La 5 more like 39 km/h slower).

No idea about the Yak yet but by my calculations it shouldn't be capable of better than 491.6 km/h; if done correctly.

Yak seem to suffer more than other planes : it suffers from the warmer air AND it is very quick to overheat. You cannot stay at full power low, it will inevitably overheat, even all rads opened. with this configuration it does not go faster than 490 km/h (my tests were very "rough" and quickly made)

109 does not overheat, at 1.3 ATA, 2400 rpm / and the F4 can maintain 510 km/h low altitude.

190 does not seem to overheat either, and reach 520-530 km/h 1.3 ATA

MC 202 is around 495

P40 is around 475 km/h max combat setting

La 5 seem to be "better" in combat setting (max RPM) the heat is mangeable, and it reaches 495 - 500 km/h 510 with Boost

Tests were very empiric, so apologies if these are not fully right, this is more or less the feeling.

Yak take the worst of the "summer" shock :)

The thing about one source is that it's not backed up or challenged.

tried La5 in summer map, 0 wind, at 500m  air inlet =100% air outlet=0%, oil rad=0%,  wep on, 100% prop pitch, throttle 100% get overheat message oil temp reach 123C, cylinder temp 230C, untill Wep time limit reach no engine damage!!!!!  L5 got a over-heat damage free engine !!!!

Were you going at max speed though? Because I imagine as soon as you start turning and less airflow goes over the engine, the temperature will increase.

Problem is that the temperature values were already well over the maximum allowed. Engine damage really should occur even in level flight.
