Just Some General Info on Re-entering The IL-2 World PLEASE!

I started playing IL-2 at the release and played up to the 1946 edition.   Due to a flood some, or most of them have been damaged and might be useless.  I'm looking for the latest and greatest for realistic combat flight simulators, and many inquires come up with IL-2 after all these years. I loved this game for its physics, graphics, and online/multiplayer.  Does IL-2 still have a big following for online play/Dedicated Servers?.  What editions do I need to install/purchase to bring me up to date to play all/everything?  If IL-2 is not the front runner anymore, what other games would come close the gameplay/experience as to date?  Any and all information would be most appreciated.

BOS, ROF, DCS ? Install Rise of Flight and DCS - They have free planes + game is free ! (SPAD, Albatros - ROF and DCS has a free unarmed P-51 and a Su-25) CLOD is 2,95$ or something like that on Steam right now. ROF wargrounds server is very populated and the SPAD XIII is al you need to fight. It's free. If you like ROF you'll love BOS. Though MP isn't that crowded for some reason I don't understand.

Well... IL-2 1946 is still kicking (the 4.13 patch came out a few months back) but the online numbers are beginning to really drop off. 1CGS and 777 Studios, the developers here, started out with Rise of Flight and have since taken over the IL-2 series name with IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad. Rise of Flight is definitely the only real game in town for WWI air combat while there are a couple of options in the WWII area. You can certainly go with IL-2: BoS (on sale right now BTW) or you can wait and see what the DCS: WWII project comes up with. The number of aircraft is very limited right now but that is looking to certainly be the most realistic of the options while IL-2: BoS is extremely realistic but with a few less buttons to push to get going. Honestly, IL-2: BoS is the better game while being a simulator... its better than IL-2 1946 in terms of its flight model/physics fidelity and the graphics have come a long way. The weak point is the fairly simple single player campaign and a fairly limited set of 10 aircraft... but that will soon double to 20 with the release of IL-2: Battle for Moscow, due in 2016.

Hi Tater!

Your timing couldn't be any better as Battle of Stalingrad is on for 50% off until Nov 2nd.

The online is alive and well with a current server cap of 64 players which is I believe increasing to 84(82?), there are a variety of servers out there to choose from with a huge mix of options as far as mission objectives and roles. In all honesty if you're looking for solid online flight, BoS is fantastic.

As others have stated, DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) is also a solid option as is Rise of Flight, both have free content allowing you to jump in without coughing up anything up front.

Not sure how long you've been out of the loop but I would def recommend a solid hotas setup along with TrackIR.

Anyway, welcome back, hope you find what you're looking for, see you in the sky!

Seriously: Get BoS now, if your PC can handle it!

It's 50% off right now. The first Summer and autumn maps are right around the corner (coming tomorrow or thursday) Multiplayer will be super crowded over the weekend, I can pretty much guarantee it.

You won't regret your purchase. Apart from the single player campaign, BoS is everything IL2 1946 was and much, much more.

  1. I took a look at what is available.  Can I simply purchase BOS without having all my old copies installed?   There are 3 versions on steam. one 24.99 and the other two are 9.99. Which one do I need to purchase for the most online playability?  Or do I need to purchase outside of steam since they are limited to only be compatible with other steam purchases????

As for the multiple DCS simulators available, which ones offer the most online play/players.   I don't mind playing single player, but I definitely got to put my tunes on and dogfight real people.  There is no AI that I have encountered yet, that comes close to the real thing.

Remember this is not a continuation of the old IL2. The old IL2 is still there.. I still fly it as well.. but this is an entirely different animal...

You want the Battle of Stalingrad Premium Edition. If you have the cash you can also buy IL2 Battle of Moscow Premium that way you can also download the Macchi, the I-16, the P-40 and the E-7 and the other upcoming aircraft as they become available... but if that is a stretch then you most definitely want to get the Premium Edition of BoS.

Whether to buy on STEAM or not depends on what you want... I prefer to buy from here... if you have other STEAM games you might want to stick with STEAM... The only STEAM game I have is Cliffs of Dover.. and that is fine with me.

As for DCS.. I suggest that you first download DCS world which is free... and then wait for a sale there.. They are due for a sale soon... If WWII is your thig then you can buy the available WWII aircraft at a reasonable price.

It's funny how much other games/sims are pushed on this forum. Thing is, no one considers them a threat because BoS and BoM are just simply amazing.

We love this sim and you will too.

Sophomoric abstracts like "threats" are a little silly considering everybody has a right to an opinion.

Second part correct (insofar as forum rules permit) but the first part meanders through hypocrisy on its way to OT.

To the OP, get BOS/BOM for variety, accessibility and fun.  Go for DCS if fidelity of systems etc is what you want, CLOD if you want a BoB scenario (hell it's only $5 or something so get it anyway) and ROF if you're a WWI nut.  Or go for all of them if you've got the cash.  You can ignore the various opinions about which is better as they all excel in different ways.

If you had to choose just one I'd go for BOS premium as you then get all maps and can fly against all available aircraft even if you cannot use some yourself.  I wouldn't go for IL2:1946 because, awesome though it was, everything else is way ahead now.  That's my opinion anyway.
