Rustedgun Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 I had BOS on my Windows 7 machine and everything was fine. I bought a Windows 10 gaming machine yesterday and BOS was the first game I installed. I immediately started to experience the "crash on exit" problem that others experience but given this is a new machine (with the latest OS and all drivers up to date) I thought it might be a good time to figure out why this happens. Please note that, as with others, I do not experience the problem if I start il2.exe without the launcher (or close the launcher before game exit). I also have installed BOS on a separate drive (E:\Games) and not on the boot drive in "program files". I reinstalled the software for a second time to ensure this was not a corrupted download. I thought it might be a DX issue because BOS installs DX on the machine before the game - but I did a dxdiag and all looks good. So the only other thing on the PC is my TrackIR - and I noticed that when the game crashes on exit the TrackIR becomes non-functional. Do other experience this? Is there an incompatibility? - or is this just a random outcome. It even froze my machine solid at one point so I needed to do a cold reboot. Does any one have any thoughts or input?
Dakpilot Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 I do not use trackIR and do not suffer from this issue on Win10, but perhaps try running without TrackIR activated to see if crash on exit is repeated as a faultfinding exercise Cheers Dakpilot
Urra Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 (edited) Have win10, and trackir, with absolutely no issues since I upgraded, never had a major crash issue on win10 latest nvidia drivers. Only thing that causes freezes is when an MP server crashes midflight, but this as far as I know isn't my fault. Track ir always becomes nonfunctional after a crash. You just have to restart it. Have you modified the terrain file at all? I've had some issues crop up when custom terrain setting are present, but vanilla runs ok. Edited October 22, 2015 by roaming_gnome
Rustedgun Posted October 22, 2015 Author Posted October 22, 2015 roaming - I have not modified the terrain file, everything is vanilla but it is good to hear all works in your case with TrackIR. Dakpilot - Thanks - I did go ahead and try your suggestion. I have been testing for hours now with TrackIR on/off and Launcher on/off... and now, no matter what combination I use, it all works. I have not had a crash since last night when it crashed repeatedly. I am not sure if I am just getting lucky (probably) or my new computer has mystical self-healing powers, not so likely :>) Only time will tell but I consider myself fortunate that, at the moment, it is working in all scenarios and not failing in all scenarios.
Dakpilot Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Consider yourself lucky if you have a mystical self healing computer Don't you just hate bugs/issues that you can never find the cause/solution of the problem perhaps Win10 did a stealth update that solved a compatibility issue, hope the problem stays away! Cheers Dakpilot
SharpeXB Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 OP Is your CPU overclocked? I have BoS installed on E: Games as well. No problems so far. The above reason was the cause of all my game crashes in the past. I'm no expert but just putting that out there. Do any other games crash? Especially sim type games?
Rustedgun Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 After another day and the mystic healing is still holding (fingers crossed as I move forward) Hi Sharpe... Thanks for the comments. No overlocking on this machine yet. I have now installed other sim games on the new PC (BOS was the first game I installed) and am not getting any crashes on any of those thank goodness.
Rustedgun Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 OK... no mystic healing involved. I now understand why it does not crash anymore. I just remembered that before I started testing the "crashing on exit" scenario I unchecked "seed when downloaded" in the launcher (someone mentioned that in a post I read concerning another issue). That closes the launcher when I start the game and hence it never crashes because the launcher is already closed. So the original problem causing the crash must lie in the code that BOS uses in the launcher and probably has something to do with the seeding process. If anyone else happens to run into this just uncheck "seed when downloaded"

Just noticed that upon entering the mission screen for an MP server, I do get a screen freeze on the map screen if I don't have both lights "green" on the track ir 5. It somehow interferes with mission loading.
