Bomber Intercept Mode for Multiplayer Idea

Recommended Posts

A Bomber Intercept Mode is what multiplayer needs. As of right now I'm sure many of us are bored of doing the same thing over and over again. Takeoff, fly over objective, wait for contacts, furball. RTB. repeat.

Attacking side have 10 or more He-111s/Pe2s and Fighter Escorts. Players have the choice of either being a gunner in the bomber or flying a fighter. Bombers are controlled by AI, as well as bombardiers. Mission is to escort bombers to objective with minimal loses and to destroy mission objective. AI will fly a predetermined route and release bombs on their own. Amounts of damage to main target should be based on how many bombers are left.

To make it more interesting, to respawn in a fighter you will have to respawn to original spawn point (air) where you started the game. This will make you fly further after every death to meet up with bombers again. Or you could just become a gunner to avoid the long flight to your bombers, leaving them at the mercy of enemy fighters and flak.

Interceptors takeoff from airbase to intercept bombers. They have an unlimited amount of fighters.

If target is destroyed, extra time is allowed to escort bombers out of area for extra points.

Something like this could break up the monotony of multiplayer and make it more centralized objective for both sides. It's almost a free for all right now.

I'm sure this has been done before. What do you guys think?

Another bonus, people would get to use their P-40's fifties on some bombers...

I don't think the Red Pilots would like it, they would be at a disadvantage because they can't really turnfight on the deck and hide in the clouds ..... :P

Seriously, it sounds good!

Probably right. Thats why I think something like this would be awesome. Force people out of their comfort zones. This could be a lot of fun.

" On the first day of the battle one large group of our fighter planes on its way to the front, was met several times by a "shield" of German fighters. This group then divided into two parts. One part engaged with the enemy "shield", as before, holding the Germans in the area where they had chosen to intercept our fighters, while the other part changed course and intercepted groups of German bombers as they came up to the front line.

On another sector of the front one of our fighter formations continued the attempt to break through this shield, rather than going around it. The enemy, however, by distributing their forces at various altitudes, was able to keep our fighters engaged. Although we inflicted heavy losses on the enemy fighters, their bombers were unmolested."

Problem is, that the MP server takes a massive[/] performance hit with even small numbers of AI aircraft. The sim is simply not optimised for having large numbers of AI, especially not in MP, where you can't just despawn them, when they are at a range of +12km.

Man, whats up with that? Pretty lame for a game made in 2013.

That's the price we pay for advanced AI that flies with the exact same FM and CEM as we do.

I work Friday nights.

No need for AI Bombers : http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/16460-friday-night-bomber-flights/

Happens only once a week, but is much more fun than lonewolfing on a dogfight server. The trick is a decent mission with objectives and the players willing to team up according to the mission set up.

I have been asking for an event similar to this on Saturdays or Sundays for us in the western hemisphere to partake in.

Even when I got off at 3:30PM on weekdays I couldn't make them, and that is an unusually early time to get off work in general.

they've focused too much on multiplayer with no returns, time to focus on sp and bring back the core simmers

So, make a mission, test it,  and either host it or give it to someone who can.

It's not bloody rocket science.

Ditto.

[A few hours later I'm feeling guilty about being grumpy in my above post.   Having said that though, it can only be good if more people give mission-building a try. It's not easy to start with (and a degree in rocket science would in fact be useful) but it adds another dimension to the game. And personally speaking, I think it's great fun.  Having other people flying and enjoying a mission that you've made really does fill you with a warm glow!

Details, guides and helpful fellow enthusiasts can all be winkled out in the mission builders' forum, obviously. :salute: ]

DBS guys please consider moving it to Sat or Sun. Friday at that time is really bad for me

No worries. I enjoy creating stuff. I'll just follow the guides from the Mission Editing forum.
