I don't know if the BoS engien could handle space (graphic and physics wise) and things like the aerodynamics modle would overqualify it for a Star Wars project but sth along the lines could do well (not to mention the engine should be able to at least allow for 100 players in one area because in Star Wars everything is about size and numbers).

As lucrative as the casual (dumb) marked may be as used it is lacking any potential for inovation. Battlefront makes kind of up for this with stunning graphics and sounds, which not every game can accomplish.

If a project like Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous with Star Wars Theme arised it probably would blow each and everyones pockets away but the effort required to make it is far bigger than just making a good looking, quickly boring casual game (not bashing Battlefront, haven't played it yet, but it pretty much shows my initial concerns true).

The Star Wars universe doesn't really care about space physics anyway, so no worries there. :-)

Apart from the, eh, unique space physics there is also the fact that a lot of the action takes place near planet surfaces. But I agree with most of your points. I just want a space combat sim that feels more like the Death Star battle (with things like wing settings and formation commands) and less like a Playstation extravaganza.

Considering the material they are based on, Star Wars games have generally been a disappointment in my experience.

Can't agree with you there.

In fact I think, that SW has given rise to more good games than any other fiction franchise (except perhaps Lord Of The Rings)

The X-Wing and TIE-fighter "sims" were quite good. Rebel Assault looked great for its time. Dark Forces really pushed the envelope for the FPS genre (as did its first sequel) Knights of the Old Republic is still one of my all time favourite RPGs. The first Battlefront game was not exactly ahead of its time but pretty fun nonetheless.

It's a matter of taste I suppose, but there's no denying that many of the SW games (especially those made before the last prequel movie came out) have been quite succesful and have been enjoyed by a lot of people.

Yea I loved both Battlefront games and also found Jedi Knight II to be a good game (it was pretty hard at times actually). Sure today they may seem lacking but they were good for their time ( Battlefront I had more sales than Battlefiield I think).

A game purely about space combat with a authentic touch of realism where it fits would be awesome and offer great potential for MMO's, be it as a retail or free to play.

I've always wondered why a serious flight sim developer doesn't cash in on that. One Star Wars game using the Il2 engine (with souped up graphics and dumbed down physics) would pay for ten esoteric sims. Think wonderful but neglected subjects subjects like the Chaco air war and the Lend-Lease ferry route across Siberia,

If I were a certain flight sim developer, I'd quietly get some staff to produce SW assets and release them themselves as a free mod.  It would sell a hell of a lot of copies of the base game.

To be quite honest, I think Gaijin could make one hell of a SW flight 'sim'. They certainly know how to make things look right, and they're pretty good at making balanced, fast and fun gameplay. If they made a 'full real' mode in the vein of what's currently in WT, it would propably be about as realistic as a SW game is gonna get anyway.

NO, just NO! Don't ruin the Star Wars license by suggesting a game with endless grinding and overprised (and stupid) payment options. Gaijin has made a space game already and form what I heared they screwed it up badly.

I'd rather see what the guys from Planetside 2 could accomplish given they had enough founds for it.

Edit: As a friendly reminder for the future, don't ever mention Gaijin and balanced in one sentence.

Adjusted poll for multiple choice and added a few new fighters.

Ok now that the ARC-170 is in the options I had to vote. Sexiest Star Wars multi purpose fighter.

Also voted for "Not listed" due to the B-Wing not included. There's just sth very attractive about it's strange design.

I changed my vote to the TIE Interceptor. So darned sexy with massive firepower.

Mmm... I'm more into the Snowspeeders myself.

Looking forward to December for the release of the movie as well.

Spekie you need to add the B Wing Brother, so I can vote :)

About like popular aircraft in Flight Sims (P-51 and FW-190) wouldn't everyone just fly the Millennium Falcon?

The Falcon is an old piece of junk. Besides, it's a fast cargo ship, not really a combat spacecraft.

B-Wing added, I can't believe I missed that one.

+1, it would however phenomenal if they made a Star Wars space combat sim just like Star Citizen. You could buy an Imperial Battle Cruiser or Falcon or a Fighter type.

Yea but there should definetly be a clear faction set while in Star Citizen it's more some kind of "lone wolfing". The concept of having an interactive hangar ect would fit a Star Wars space sim well though.

They arent really that bad as many want to see the, sure Jar-Jar is one of them most ridiculous characters in the history but generally speaking there are also very fine characters and played very well by the actors. And when you add to that all the books and games around it turns to be quite good. At least thats my opinion.

However the new ones, oh I have such a bad feelings. With current political correctness, over usage of CGI and generally speaking more primitive audience I'm expecting something close to Transformers. No fancy plot, no great acting.

If anything, had the prequels been more PC, we wouldn't have Jar Jar.

I can live with that.

What I'd like is really a game that brings out the differences, just like a flight sim. For example, we know that the Y-Wing is a heavy and unmaneuvrable fighter with lots of firepower (there is actually a provision for a rear gunner as well), which would make it similar to a Bf 110. The Tie Fighter, on the other hand, is light and very maneuvrable which makes it similar to an I-16. So using the original Il2 as comparison we'd get something like:

Y-Wing = Bf 110

X-Wing = Bf 109

A-Wing = I-153

Tie Fighter = I-16 (remember the complaints that it "behaves like a Tie Fighter"?)

Tie Interceptor = I-185

etc etc.

Lite sims and shooters like Battlefield tend to conflate everything and make vehicles feel more or less the same.

If anything I would compare the X-Wing to the P-51 D. It's a heavily armed long range fighter with hyperdrive and shields, but it's not a lightweight nor a better dogfighter than the TIEs. It's not too far off considering George used WW2 gun cameras form B-17 attacks and possible P-51 vs Bf 109 digfights for his space combat scenes.

The Y-Wing is barely worth called a fighter though but a fighter-bomber (or an assault plane like the Bf-110) at best.

What I really wonder about is the B-Wings role. Some state they're heavy fightes, others that they are modern attackers (similar in role to Y-WIng). Personally I rather tend to believe the former.

Indeed George Lucas admitted, that the space combat scenes we see in the original trilogy are inspired by the airwar of WWII. That's no secret though.

Considering the B-Wing...

For me it was always a true bad ass heavy fighter. Something like the Jug, or even more the Skyraider.

A shame that the B-Wing is only to be seen on some sort sequences at the battle above Endor.

I hope we will see a new appearance in Episode VII.

Does anybody remember the B-Wing mission pack for X-Wing?

Never tried anything harder. X-Wing was a tough space sim. But this add on was close to be impossible to master.

If you watch the new Starwars cartoon on Disney Starwars Rebels there's a B-Wing in the Season 2 preview trailer. Season 2 is about 3 episodes in right now so sometime it will make an appearance.

Since the show takes place 5 years before A New Hope it must be an early prototype. Can't wait to see it in action as it is one of my favs as well.

Don't know if I really like Disney throwing every piece of Star Wars background out the window, so I take the series with a great grain of salt.

If I remember correctly I've read that the B-Wings infact were first deployed in the Battle of Yavin 4 in Episode VI. They were togethe with the A-Wings the most modern fighters of the Alliance, which still had to deploy the aging T-65 X Wings and Y-Wings (unfortunately I can't find that book anymore, which is a great pity).

Either way it's a very fascinating spacecraft (even if considered ugly by some). Must feel amazing to fly evasive manouvres sitting in a rotating cockpit.

Yep I think that was accurate for the old canon books from the 90s. Loved the X-Wing series books.

Now with all those wiped clean and the new novels and cartoons, who knows what they are going to do. I like some of the new stuff and still love some of the older stuff. Hopefully they can bring some of the good stuff back into the mix and leave out some of the hokey stuff.
