Hi

Is there any chance free to play version will be released ? It could help people who cant afford to pay for the full version.

Doubt it. But Jason did mention early on that "some kind of demo is planned".

Posted

Just try Rise of flight and see if it runs well, it's the official "can I run BoS" benchmark.

Given this doesn't follow a MMO format i highly doubt a F2P model, although a demo mission could happen :), and would be quite beneficial.

Guys,

I did not say any Demo was planned. I said we'd consider it. And there is no F2P version of BOS planned at this time.

Remember too it took 2 (maybe 2 1/2) years before RoF became F2P.

well i can run rof at 25-30 fps which is enough for me any slight hit in performance and i may not be able to run bos

If you can only run RoF at 25-30 FPS then you seriously need an upgrade. My last Pc ran the game at 50 FPS and I have long since upgraded from that Pc. seriously, if people are intrested in flight sims they need to know they have to upgrade to the best rig possible.

You know what? I bet everybody who have outdated PCs know they 'have to upgrade', and still they don't upgrade. Why?

'cause that outdated pc is a hand me down and they desperately wait the next one to fall out of the tree?
Some are/were actually playing rof with sticks on their 2nd handed down and esteemed them self lucky no longer having to use the keyboard for substitute.
No kidding and on MP.
The while they did have a good time, may be even better than some with a HOTAS :)

Of course that 'why' was a rhetorical question. I'm just a bit annoyed when people are discussing minimal specs for example and somebody comes and say 'your PC is shit. didn't you know you have to upgrade it?'

BTW i'm not too happy about no F2P and no demo, but i can live with it for sure

Yep, I knew - 200%with you.

Just rubbing in the salt a bit deeper

Because an upgrade to a high end PC costs MONEY ?

Perfect answer. I was thinking the same  ;)  But I wanted to hear it from Rigsby

....and everyone on the highway should drive Maseratis or McLarens.

RoF doesn't need "the best rig possible", in fact it scales quite nicely, and runs rather well. You never know, maybe raaaid has an uber rig but has super sampling and vsync on :)

Edit: And there's nothing wrong with 30 fps, if that's all the old girl can muster!

Movies are different. There is a noticeable difference between 60fps and 30fps for me when playing a game.

Yes, definitely; once you hit 60, you never go back! Although in pre-60 days, I do remember my old ATI 9800 Pro struggling to make 20 fps in Doom 3, yet still finding it acceptable at the time

yeah movies work at 24 fps and havent seen anybody complaining of lack of smoothness yet

well mabye cameron who wants to make movies at 60 fps

Maybe we shouldn't stray too far off topic and get into the whole "what the eye can distinguish" debate :)

Lol. Yeah, gotta love the raaaid threads :)

No raaaid. The fluoride administration department has all the answers. They know everything.

Was it not more like 8 months?

Not from what I've found. Release: May 7 2009

Why should there be a F2P demo? We all paid for it, why shouldn't others? Yes ROF had this but as far as I know its the only flight sim that does this.  But you don't buy the whole game ,you must buy planes and instruments, weapons separately. I'd rather buy the whole package up front and be done with it.  At one point I figured I'd spent over 300 bucks on ROF in over two years. Now If I was in best buy and saw ROF on the shelf for 300.00 I wouldn't give it a second look.

Who would spend that much on a game all at once? Over two years it comes out to like 18 bucks a month. I think BOS should be as the others, buy it, play it...no free demo stuff, unless 777 is going to part it out like ROF. Jason has said they will not do that with this game. So pony up the cash to fly it!

Hopefully you are not involved in any kind of business! :)

There is a reason why drug dealers give the free hit to his/her new clients...

Thing have changed in the gaming a lot in the last years. People are migrating in droves towards f2p,flash based & MMOs, the classical

form of gaming is challenged big time. To old model of "Pay 70€ to try out if you like the game or not" is bloody hard to make economically

viable. People just dont pay that kind of money blindly. Well, some of us freaks do, but...

To expand the user base the F2P, or demo method is crucial. That is basically the only way to lure in potential new clients and get some revenue.

Hell, I oogled the RoF for couple of years, decided that I wont invest into buying the game as I am not that interested in WW I planes.

Now, with the demo, I have been flying it in the last weeks and now I have started contemplating what planes I will buy....

New client is hooked...and I dont think I am the only one...

No, you're not the only one, the demo/F2P is how I got hooked. The first time I downloaded the demo it didn't run very well, so I dismissed it. One new rig later and another demo download and I was hooked; I dread to think how much I have spent on RoF since!

Edit: Quick look at my RoF profile, it lists all your purchases: approximately $186.21, all because of a free demo!

Agree, I have also started to play ROF because of the F2P version

How long did it take to spend that? All at once or over a year or more? I think 90 to 100 all at once from anyone buying it brings the cash in faster than parting it out and waiting,IMO.

My profile is over 300 but it took over two years to build it up to that. That's not a lot month to month to keep the lights on. I will admit, I do like the "don't have to buy it if you don't want to" and still be able to play online. You're not forced to upgrade it just to get online.

Jason said no demo for now so this point is moot.

I'm glad it also tells you the dates because I had no idea! My first purchase was the Sopwith Camel on the 26th November 2011, so that cost was over 2 years. That's a little under $8 a month, or basically a fiver in GBP. Small price to pay I reckon, for what I've got out of the game, during that period.

Yup, thats not bad. I remember getting some spending money and just clicking away grabbing anything I could! I'm missing a few of the newer planes but thats it.

IIRC RoF had a limited-time demo before becoming F2P. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess i was right  . Don't really know how a limited (in time and in content) demo would hurt BoS but it's not my business :)

same here, 60FPS with v-sync and tripple buffering is my preference.
