manitouguy Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 hi - i am enjoying trying to learn to fly the i16 have the engine management settings been posted here somewhere? i have not been able to locate but would like to know how to fly it 'properly' ? any advice or assistance much appreciated regards, Ron
Finkeren Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 The engine is practically an earlier version of the one in the La-5 and is operated in pretty much the same way: Mixture: Run at 85 - 100% up to 4000m (but remember to change gear on the supercharger) Lean as normal above that. Supercharger: Change gears around 2300m RPM: The engine can be run comfortable at max all day, so unless you're cruising a long stretch there's really not much need to touch the rpm-governor. However, the prop pitch range is small for such a powerful engine, so it has a tendency to overrev' in a dive. You can hear it clearly on the engine sound and will get a message that the engine had gone into 'boosted mode' in the technochat. Close throttle and intakes when you hear the engine reving up in a dive. Forsazh: The extra boost can be used safely for 5-10 mins (better say 5 mins to be sure), only works in supercharger gear 1 and is mostly ineffective above 2000m Cooling: Unlike the La-5 the engine is relatively easy to keep cool. It only has inlet shutters for the engine cooling, no outlet. Else cooling works the same way as on the La-5, but try to keep cylinder heads just a bit cooler. Carbuerator: The carbuerator is gravity- fed, so it cuts out if you nose down too fast or pull any other kind of negative G. Similar to early Merlin engines seen in other sims. It cuts out almost immediately when flying inverted. That's pretty much it. Only very slightly different from the La-5.
Finkeren Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 What people tend to forget is that the I-16 type 24 has a very very powerful engine for its size. The M-63 is rated at 1100 hp, almost the same as the Klimov 105PF on the Yak and LaGG and the I-16 is much lighter. The result is, that the Ishak actually has the best power/weight ratio of any VVS fighter in BoS (and on par with the Fw 190 and Bf 109G) so you should treat the engine with respect.
bivalov Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 in RL and in game forsazh limit is 5 minutes. but also you can use only 2300 rpm as separate forsazh.
-TBC-AeroAce Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Never really had a problem running this at max but I'm sure that's not very realistic
Finkeren Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Never really had a problem running this at max but I'm sure that's not very realistic The Shvetsov engines were made to run that way, though ofc you greatly reduced the time between overhauls by running continuously at high rpm. It was actually fairly common for VVS pilots during the war to run their engines at full power for the entire duration of the flight to lessen workload. This reduced the engines service lives to maybe 15 flights, but was often deemed acceptable because the expected service life of the aircraft in general was in the same ballpark. Though to be exact: You're not really running it at max unless you use forsazh, and then it's limited to a few minutes.

I just wanted to point this out for posterity.
