Marcomies Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 This turned out to be pretty hard to google so I ask here. What does ata mean? How does it affect engine? Does Fw 190 A-4 with 1.42 ata have different engine than the one with ata 1.35, or is it just optimized or unrestrained or something?
JtD Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) ata - technical atmospheres absoulute, 98.1 kPa, about the pressure of one atmosphere at sea level The Germans measure the boost for their engines in ata, and, simply speaking, higher boost means more power. In case of the Fw 190 with 1.42 and 1.35 ata, the BMW 801 was normally using a take off/emergency boost pressure of 1.42 ata @ 2700 rpm, generating about 1750 hp on take off. For some time during the introduction, however, this had to be reduced to to problems with overheating. It therefore was limited to 1.35 ata @ 2450 rpm, generating about 1550 hp on take off.
