PWCG for BOS Discussion

I generated 2 new missions that worked.  I did go back and play the previous one just to confirm it was bugged.

Probably dumb question on my part.

I have PWCG installed in preparation to start using it here soon, of course I enabled logging for it to work properly.

I am generating a lot of mission report txt files in my data folder, I assume it is ok to delete these on occasion?

Hi All, I have been playing PWCG for a bit now and I am wondering how promotions work for German fighters. I started as a Fw. and I now have 11 missions done with 13 victories. I figured I would have been promoted by now. and I am surprised I don't see an option to tweak this number in the advanced config. It should be noted I have earned the iron first and second crosses though. and I have looked here before: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/21948-medals-and-promotions-pwcg/, but it only mentions ground attack and bombers.

EDIT: Got promoted on my next mission lol :D

Ha congrats on the promotion!

I'm not sure how or if there are impactd if you delete prior missions. I seem to recall that you can but I don't want to steer you off a cliff lol.

Hope you enjoy PWCG. It is the only way I play. I just hope the new campaign coming is as good or Pat restarts work on his. It is so close!

Hi dburne, TBH I don't really understand, what you mean with 'I enabled logging', but it might be wrong, because since one of Pat's last updates, PWCG is the only possibility to play SP missions, without getting those hundreds of mission report text files in the data folder. Are you sure, they are not from your flying the default campaign missions, because this one creates them, while PWCG deletes them by itself.

Ah yes I am currently flying the Stalingrad Campaign, so that well may be it - I just assumed since I had to enable logging for PWCG that was the reason for all these .txt files accumulating.

As far as what I mean by enabling logging, from the PWCG Readme:

5. Make sure that mission logging is enabled:

 - Open ...\<Game install dir>\data\Startup.cfg

 - Find mission_text_log

 - Set mission_text_log  = 1

OK, now I understand, this is IIRC for the PWCG AAR.

Ok so out of curiosity I disabled logging, and went back to my Stalingrad campaign flying. All those mission report txt files are no longer being generated from flying the campaign, so it must be due to having logging enabled for PWCG.

I will just leave logging disabled for now until I get through the Stalingrad campaign - if ever LOL - and then re-enable when I am ready to start a PWCG campaign. Up to Level 7 now in the campaign and those dang AI are getting a little tough on me!

Oops, I didn't know that, thanks for this info. So I will also disable it, when I fly default campaign missions, next time, on pilot level 18, so far, still a long and winding road to go. ;)

The logs are more than a bit of a pain.  PWCG needs the mission logs for an AAR, but if you enable logs then every mission will log.  As has been noted, only PWCG auto cleans the directory.

Finally ... why so many separate files?  Never figured that out, but I can take an educated guess.  I suspect that it has to do with the multi-threaded nature of the code.  If you have multiple files different threads can write to their own log files without blocking while waiting for access or doing simultaneous writes that would result in a garbled mess.

Does yak-1b coming in pwcg anytime soon?

My guess is that 1C is focused on their work.  Haven't really had serious discussions about doing more with PWCG.  That doesn't mean it won't happen, but it's not in progress at the moment.

Hey All,

I have been enjoying this mod so much. It is such a nice breath of fresh air. I had another question that came up though.

I do not have battle of moscow. I only have battle of Stalingrad and battle of Kuban pre-order.

I was wondering if there would be a way for me to mod this mod in order to use the Battle of Kuban planes I currently have access to. I am trying to gauge how much work that would be and where I would start.

I know there is no Battle of Kuban Map out yet, but it would be cool to fly a 110 G-2 if I Start my campaign as late as possible or something.

Does anyone know of a way to add in the battle of Kuban planes to PWCG.

P.S.: I have noticed a bug: when you have your injury level set to 4, and your pilot gets made a POW, the after action report glitches out and with every new screen pops up the error window. furthermore, being captured as a POW does not seem to have an effect on the campaign at all.

Adding planes takes code as well as configuration. so the short answer is no.  Making the planes completely configuration driven is not a bad idea though,

Do you happen to know what files would need to be edited?

I don't mind playing around and trying to make it work on my own. I noticed there is one file that contains a list of all the planes with their start and stop date plus roles etc.

Obviously the Kuban planes would need to be added there, but I figure you need to then make a squad that uses that plane as well.

and then after that associate said squad to a particular set of missions?

I imagine I am over simplifying everything but this is how I figure it works. I only spent about 20 mins messing with it last night before I posted here for help.

One question from me, is it possible to make the AI aircrafts of my squadron land after ground attack missions?

PatrickAWlson

@switch: RIght now you can't add a plane.  I would have to make code changes to allow users to do that.

@Yogiflight: I have to look into that.  In RoF I went back and forth with squadron mates landing because the results were generally awful.  Not sure where I ended up on that.  It might be configurable.

Hi Patrick, I don't fly ROF, so I don't know, how it works there, but in fighter missions here in BOS the AI landings work really good. One thing, that has to be changed in the advanced config, is to set the landing approach waypoint from the default 750m to 500m.

@Pat.

I am not at my Gaming PC right now, but I assume that the users only have access to the pre-compiled code then? Do you have a public repository for the de-complied code, or do you prefer to keep that all under lock and key? I would be interested in reading the code, simply just to see how this magnificent mod works and comes together.

Edit: I see now all of the files are just configs and the app is packaged into the exe.

Hey guys. New to Il-2 (and flight sims in general) but loving PWCG. Thanks Pat  :)

I have a question. Occasionally my squadron and I will run into large groups of enemy planes, heavily disadvantaged. Does the AI have any provision to retreat from a fight? I've not seen such a thing yet - generally we'll stay in a fight until the bitter end even when the odds are massively against us.

Sadly, it does not.  :(

Mostly true, but not completely.  The AI, as far as I am aware, never takes odds into account.  The AI does have a RTB flag that kicks in when a certain amount of damage is done.  How is that flag actually implemented?  No idea.

You go to the folder where you have installed BoS. From there you open folder "Data".

Look up file with the name "Startup.cfg". Open it with Notepad.

Look for the row in the file that says "mission_text_log = 0". Change 0 to 1, save the file, close it.

P.S. Unfortunately I stil get an error that no combat logs are available, when I click "Combat report" in PWCG, even though I can see the log files.

Try running as administrator so the executable has full permissions to read/write anything it needs to.

HI!

I just bought Steam version of BoS and BoM with default planes. I downloaded and installed pwgc 2.1.2  and everything works ok.  What a great program.

It is easy enough and misiions are generally very good.

I have strangest problem though:

I can't play as a german on Stalingrad map. All the Luftwaffe squadrons are located to Moscow front. Moscow map campaign works well.

I have tried everything. Tried to adjust campaign starting days, rank, mission types...

Russian campaign is working with both maps...

il2mg - Mission Generator (another great addition) works like a charm.

Another question:

Whta is that lone wolf mission?

PS. Maybe somebody here remembers me from Il2-1946. I have made few maps and campaigns for it!

If you start your campaign on day 1 then it is too early for Stalingrad.  Moscow is the only map available on day 1.  Stalingrad becomes available on (I think) on August 1942.

BTW: through transfers you can freely switch between Moscow and Stalingrad.  After the battle of Moscow the Moscow front became largely static until 1943.  PWCG reflects this, continuing action in Moscow through the summer of 1943, just with fewer air units.

So .. you can ...

1. Fly on the Moscow front until the Stalingrad front opens up

2. Take leave until August 1942 and transfer

3. Start a new campaign after August 1942.

Lone wolf mission - mostly a WWI thing (PWCG was originally written for RoF and now supports both RoF and BoS), but once you become an ace you can go out on lone wolf missions (a patrol with no wingmen).

The Yak-1 saw combat as early as June 1941, but the Yak-1 Series 69, which we have specifically modeled in the game, first saw combat in May '42.

I would guess that Pat is using the series 69 as a stand-in for the earlier Yaks.

I do that where it seems necessary.  For example, I also use the Stuka D as a standin for the Stuka B.  Is the performance of the series 69 so significantly better that it should not be there?  I am thinking that it should be fine for a matchup with the F2.

I don't think the performance should be that much better. Besides, there aren't any earlier Yaks you could use to fill the role of a modern fighter that excels at low-altitude turning combat. It's like giving the Russians the FE2b in RoF - perhaps it's better than what they actually had, but there's nothing else that can perform that function available in the game. And ultimately, the Soviets lacking a modern turn fighter sounds way more inaccurate than them having Yak-1 69s in late 1941.

I just looked through the Intel Map of October 41 and didn't find any P40 units. Were there no P40s at that time?

How much better is the Yak ser. 69 to the version used in October 41?

The P-40s are only present on the Stalingrad map, which becomes active in August.

I don't know, but I doubt it was much better.

The Yak-1 s. 69 with the 105PF engine was quite a bit faster than the Yak-1 with a 105P engine in the second haft of 1941 would be. Something like 25-30km/h at SL, more equal at altitude.

There is more confusion when it comes to things like climb rate. Some tests suggest, that 105P/PA Yaks were no worse in a climb than their 105PF counterpart, some suggest, that they were quite a lot worse, from 5.7 minutes up to as much as 7.3 minutes to 5000m.

The turn rate seems to have been slightly worse than the S. 69.

Hello All,

I tried running the PWCGbos and it did generate a mission, but the mission was not visible in game on the missions list.  The mission does load into the editor, but when I run the integrity check, I get a "Failed Integrity Check" error:

Object(7192:Radio Beacon) >> no model file! : graphics\vehicles\ndb

Object(7193:) >> entity has no linked object!
Object(7195:) >> entity has no linked object!
Object(7198:) >> entity has no linked object!
Object(7201:) >> entity has no linked object!
Object(7204:) >> entity has no linked object!

... lots of these...

Object(7447:) >> entity has no linked object!
Object(7450:) >> entity has no linked object!
Object(7453:) >> entity has no linked object!
Max airfields with entity number exceeded! max: 8, actual: 87
Max total entity number exceeded! max: 80, actual: 113

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Pat,

Is there currently any way of cutting down the pilot transfer/replacement rate? It would be really cool if loosing squad mates actually caused an attrition effect and it took time for new pilots to transfer in, rather than getting instant replacements and always being at max strength.

Cheers  :salute:

That's actually a nice idea. Wonder if Pat can do it. Reduced strength at times might lead to more limiting missions or more caution before engaging. Could be interesting.
