Nice. I just have my cast IL2 in 1/72nd scale, but it fills me with anticipation.

See, this is the LaGG we should have in BoS.

I only do 1/48... well I should, since I haven't touched my modelling gear in yonks...

I have an attic full of unbuilt 1/32 and 1/24 scale.......well half full, the other half is full of collected flight helmets.

my brother from another scale  :friends:

I have gunsights and aircraft ammo (but not in the attic!), what sorta helmets you got? Always wanted to get me an US Navy one (yes, I'm another Top Gun casualty..)

I have mostly modern British and US helmets and Masks.

US:

Helmets

HGU-26, HGU-55, HGU-33(the top gun one), HGU-68

Masks

MBU-5, MBU-12, MBU-20

British:

Helmets

Mk1 with G type cloth inner,Mk 4's A and L models, ALPHA and Mk10B, and a couple of civilian variants of the ALPHA.

Masks

H type, P/Q type

Yes I use them when I fly, still haven't decided which I prefer to use, American stuff is nice and light and simple, Brit stuff is more well built and complex without massive weight penalty but kinda clunky looking by comparison.

Yes when I was flying for the coastguard I even decided to try out one of my lids after getting tired of the bruising my bonce took from slapping against the side in all that low level turbulence I used to encounter........even sadder was I decided to give it a US spec reflective tape job with coastguard markings..

How do you collect flight helmets? Nick them from work, or what?

I have some gear nicked from work but we weren't issued flight helmets, check ebay and you will find loads of surplus gear like this, also you can find it at military shows, there is a big one in the UK called war and peace, military re-enactments and market stalls selling surplus, prices can get stellar for flight gear and my collection is all stuff that other people missed and got for bargain prices, you can also trade gear within a collectors community.

I have 1/32 109 F4 and G6 in the works at the moment. Also 1/24 K4 but that's more for DCS WW2 :)

My "under construction" list is too long.
Projects get put on the backburner when I move house.

Right now my projects are:
1/48 Bf 109 F-2
1/48 Pfalz D.IIIa (I hate rigging so, so much)
1/48 Nieuport 17
1/48 P-39Q
1/72 Nieuport 17
1/72 Pfalz D.III
1/72 Bf 110E

And a few 1/35 panthers, tigers, StuGs and Panzer IVs.

Not counting the projects on ice (like my 1/6 Panzer IV G)!

After two moves in the past two years, and now helping take care of critters and a large property, I've sold off a lot of my 1/32 and and other models. Still have a couple of hundred left, going to sell more of them off too, I just don't have the time anymore.

On the bench now are a 1/48 TBD, a 1/48 Su 27 UB and a DML 1/35 T 34/85. T 34 has the best chance of getting finished soon.

Next spring it will be finishing the S u27 UB then a 1/32 Ar 196, a 1/48 Su 27 B, and hopefully a 1/32 He 219 or 1/32 F 15C

Say, if anyone with an attic that needs emptying wants to send a few kits in my direction for some cash, I might be interested. I'm only a youngster so I don't have much of a collection yet. New large scale kits can be a bit expensive for a university student :\

ah, university... I still remember thinking "man, I never have time to do these models!"... if only I knew what was ahead lol

you know what? I was at my local hobby shop this afternoon and I took a peek at the 1/48" shelves, as it is my favourite scale, for any "BOS related" kits. I did'nt find any lagg or so, just the classic stuf you can find everywhere.

The only one that would have been ok was tamiya's sturmovik, but 70€ for a kit in this scale is way out of my budget for now. I have the Zvezda's 109 and yak waiting on the shelf, and christmas is coming so it will have to wait.

Right now I am on a P-38j, with the "Virginia Marie" paintscheme http://master194.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=78198  (french forum) which is taking me a lot of time to progress. The forthcomming release and the desire to make some kind of cockpit don't help either;

I built the Zvesda's 1/48th La 5. It was a decent piece of kit - though my modelling skills are nothing like some of the fellows who post on the various forums. I do like to ensure a decent paint job, but I don't have the patience to do fine cockpit work. (or the eye sight)

I also built the 1/48th winter IL2 with landing skis. I forget the manufacturer but I found it to be a good reproduction with some effort. The instructions weren't great, but I finally got the cowling and radiators together. The wing assembly was strange because it was so different than what I'm used to building. The cockpit, wing rads and wing formers all sat on the lower wing panel and fit like a tray to the underside of the fuselage. It works, but I didn't feel the fillets fit very well.

It's this type of topic that makes me want to start modelling again. ;)

EDIT: Speaking of local hobby shop. I was fortunate enough to have two within a short drive. One has closed up. The other has limited hours. I'd rather support him if I do re-emerge into the hobby. I don't relish spending the money on paints. Those are dang expensive.

actually I tried to build this very one kit last year. This way of making the junction between wings and fuselage kind of desoriented me. I didnt took enough time to make well enough, aaaaaaaand its gone!

First you tell yourself that it will be ok after some sanding. then you look closely and you wonder how the hell will you find a way to properly sand this. And at the same time you see all those wonderfull rivets. Then will follow the tragically known birds naming session with blood-injected eyes and foam around the mouth, and you calm yourself down, crack a beer up, look back at your workbench and negligely throw it in the trash can and move along.

it was one of the very few kit I didn't finished recently, but since some cool other stuff made their way to my collection

I 'cheated.'   After placing the cockpit et al on the bottom wing panel. I glued the lower wing assembly and fuselage together with slow drying glue. I ran a strip of tape from one wing tip OVER the fuselage and to the next tip. I sort of bent the wing so there was more dihedral than normal. After that dried I assembled the upper wing panels and re-taped as before. It wasn't perfect but it was together  better than if I followed the instructions. I had to be careful so as not to compress the wing panels into the fuselage while trying to get them lined up with the fillets.  Ultimately I wasn't pleased.... mostly because, as you mention, there's some beautiful rivet and panel lines. Using filler would have ruined the look, and I don't have the talent to recreate such detail.
