-TBC-AeroAce Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) OK so I realised that if you use custom skins and another player does not have the skin pack they will see the default skin. This is complely understandable and how it should be. My problem is that most if not all of the default skins are green and BOS is atm obviously a winter map. Hence shouldn't it default to a white skin? I suggest if possible that there be a parameter that can be assessed by the server stating summer, winter ..... That can be read that changes the default skin to its respective summer or winter skin so that camo is improved. I actually have got a little nervous about this and have stopped using custom skins as a result. I hope people understand what I'm saying. Look forward to others insite Thanks Edited September 9, 2015 by [TBC]AeroACE
Alkyan Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I don't think that's true. I don't have any custom skin, and I can see others customs skins. Am I wrong?
-TBC-AeroAce Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 I don't think that's true. I don't have any custom skin, and I can see others customs skins. Am I wrong? Yes you are wrong. If you do not have the skin pack and another person is using a custom skin you will see the default summer skin. My other idea instead of code being created to automatically select the correct colour default is simply to have the player just select somehow what they want their default to be.. 1
Alkyan Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 That explains why there is so many people using that horrible green skin for the yack.
Jade_Monkey Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) I don't think that's true. I don't have any custom skin, and I can see others customs skins. Am I wrong? He is referring to user made skins, not the in game unlocks. Edited September 9, 2015 by Jade_Monkey
Reflected Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Question: 1) John Doe creates an Erich Hartmann skin and shares it on the forum 2) Jack Black downloads it 3) John modifies the skin and draws a pink rabbit on the port wing, because he got high on some substance. He saves it under the same name 4) John and Jack fly together on WoL. John uses his pink rabbit Hartmann skin 5) Will Jack see the original Hartmann skin when he looks at John's plane, or the default one?
-TBC-AeroAce Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 I would think if the original custom skin was modified and the replaced it would show the new modified one. Not sure thou. Why don't u simply rename a skin and see what happens
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) 5) Will Jack see the original Hartmann skin when he looks at John's plane, or the default one? Hopefully only the default one would show otherwise it could be open to abuse. (More in the reverse situation than what you described). Are there hash checks on the image files during multiplayer? 6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Yeh I thought the same as well, default skins should at least be white and not green.

You will see the version of the skin that is saved in your folder assuming that it has retained the same filename as the version John Doe updated. Any custom skin that is not saved or named the same in your folder will appear as the default skin in your game. There are no hash checks that I am aware of.
BeastyBaiter Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) I think there is actually a server side setting to allow for downloading custom skins while in a match. I've seen some skins online that I'm pretty sure I don't have as either a core skin or a downloaded one. A host in one of the smaller servers also stated it was a server side option, and even pointed out his own custom skin which I could see. You can also insert audio files into missions, Jupp has put music into some of his missions. Edited September 10, 2015 by King_Hrothgar

Hmmm - I don't really like the possibility that there's a server-side setting that allows other people to upload their custom skins to your PC just because you play a MP mission. I think it would be OK if there were some client-side setting(s) that would allow a player to (1) agree to upload that player's own custom skin(s) to the MP server/other players, and/or (2) D/L and install the other players' custom skins from them or from the MP server, but I think those settings should definitely be client-side and I didn't see any such settings when I went into BoS a minute ago looking for them. Maybe I'm too much of a control freak, but that just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I don't really want to see somebody's Hello Kitty skin just because some server admin sets some option on their server - does it really work that way? Edited September 10, 2015 by TG-55Panthercules
-TBC-AeroAce Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 I'm not sure about the auto downloading/syncing of skins. I pretty sure that does not happen. I am sure however if you don't have any custom skins and another user is using a custom skin it will be displayed to the user with no skins as the default summer one. I would really like a way of choosing the the skin from the official list people will see if they don't have the skin pqcks 1
TG-55Panthercules Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I certainly agree that it's not a good idea for the default skin being displayed to a player who doesn't have the other player's custom skin installed to be a summer skin on a winter map. The devs had to tell the program which skin to use as the "default" skin if the game can't find the custom skin on the player's hard drive, so I would think it should be a pretty easy thing for the devs to tell the game to use one of the winter skins instead of a summer skin. I suppose this might be somehow balled up in the %#@x?! unlocks system and maybe the game can't be told to display any of the winter skins for a player under any circumstances unless they have "unlocked" that skin, but if that's the case then the devs should consider universally unlocking one basic winter skin for each plane type and making it the "default" skin for these purposes. It really is kinda nonsense to have only summer skins as default/available when the only map is a winter one. 1

Instead of John changing things, lets say Jack paints John's plane bright orange and saves it on his hard drive. Now John can easily be seen by Jack flying around in a bright orange plane. HA HA so funny. I had this one dude's plane painted that way back when I was flying. Ahh there's so-and-so in his bright orange plane.
unreasonable Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Well there is a solution to any visibility problems! Pity you cannot access and modify the default skin on your own PC - then you could paint them all orange and see everyone.
