How to convert a .trk to MP4 or AVI file format?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recorded a nice in game IL BOS track (.trk). How can I convert it to standard video file? (MP4 or AVI for example?) To post on Youtube...

Regards,

You need to play the track with the track recorder inside game and then use third party software like FRAPS, Bandicam, Shadowplay, etc to capture the video, then you can do post editing or upload them raw.

Correct - first get one of the programs istruba listed. Also, get Microsoft Movie Maker (it's a free download, comes as part of a bigger package but you don't have to install all the other apps in that package).

Here's the flow:

  • When flying your mission, hit Ctrl+R to record.
  • When done, exit BoS, and in the BoS launcher set the resolution to the desired resolution for your video (e.g. 720 x 1200). This will give you better performance and save you a lot of processing time.
  • Start FRAPS, or whatever program from istruba's list you chose to use.
  • Restart BoS, and choose the recording from your mission.
  • First, capture the cockpit views that you want to use in your video. Hit 'H' to hide the slider etc. If you use FRAPS, hit F8 to start and stop capturing the scenes that you want to use.
  • Once you are done with your cockpit scenes, use the view key cominations (e.g. F2, F11, Ctrl+F1, etc) to capture outside views. Again, hit 'H' to hide the slider.
  • After having captured all the scenes for your video, find all the .mp4 files that you created. Use Movie Maker to further cut them and make a good movie from them.
  • Remember - less is more, meaning all sequences should be short and focus on the message you want to deliver :)

Shadow play wi8ll be your best bet if you have a graphics card that can use it. The free Fraps and Bandicam versions are restricted in how long you can record for (30 seconds maybe?) which might be ok for a bit of guncam but not enough for a short movie etc.

Movie maker is ok althouhg the max resolution is 1080 if I remember correctly.

Hi,

In IL-2 1946 and previous I used to be able to see outside my plane and other using F2 while playing a track. This has been deactivated with Il 2 BOS? Would be very useful to record with Shadowplay or FRAPS or other...(to switch from one view to another while playing a pre recorded track).

F2 is not deactivated.

You have to toggle the view setting via the H key.

I cannot check right now but one gives you the bar and icons but you cannot use the F2 iirc and when you press H the bar and icons vanish and you can use the external views.

Shadow play works flawlessly with BoS, if you have a nvidia card. Outputs files can be mp4 type and 60fps

Camtasia Studio is also a good one that comes with a built in editor (and a YouTube uploader).

Shadowplay works well. It cant record 3440x1440 though. More common aspect ratios such as 16:9 should work fine.

Actually, when you're viewing a replay you can go back and forth from the external view ie F2 or F11 to the cockpit view by pressing Ctrl + F1

which takes you back to the in-game view. F1 takes you to a zoomed in view for some reason.

Good tip, thanks Sharpe - I had been scratching my head about that zoomed in effect....

BTW @Emil, Movie Maker can produce your output in 1080p - so that is 1920x1080, ie Full HD. (Still my screen resolution, as it happens, and OK for YouTube).

Now I wonder how I knew this, it's not explained in either game manual. I think it was a random guess on my part long ago in RoF. It it in the GUI command list?

Perhaps you are just a Ctrl freak? ;)

Actually just been playing about with a RoF track and Ctrl+F1 does not do anything, Left Alt + F1 gets you back in the cockpit and allows free control of the camera as though you were looking around: ie you are no longer have to look at the picture you were seeing in the original play-through or the zoomed in version of said view as per pressing F1 alone. Which could be useful. "Head unlinked cockpit view" I believe it is called: maybe you have changed your key binding?

No guarantee that anyone will get same results - my key bindings have been changed so much over the years. RCtrl+K+M now sends an SMS to the GF to bring me a fresh cup of coffee.

Hahaha!!

"The GF" implying that you have several? Or is it just " a girlfriend" to you?

Anyway, maybe better to make Ctrl + Alt + Supp to send an SMS to go throw the trash away...I hate having to go for the trash...

That's always worked for me in RoF although I'm without my PC now so I can't check. It's worked for a long time.

CTRL F1 definitely works to restore the cockpit view to what you were seeing in game at the time.

I asked this a while back because it was annoying that I had to do all my externals in one pass and then start the track again.

Yes I meant 1080p

I play in 1440p and movie maker cannot make videos that size.

Also that Camtasia software isn't very good if you start putting multiple tracks in, one of the DBS bomber night missions I did crashed once I got passed a certain number of tracks and trashed many hours of work. It's not really game movie making software.

Yes you (and Sharpe) are quite right, apologies, no idea why it did not seem to work when I last checked....    A useful tip indeed, restarting the whole track to get a bit of cockpit view was a real pain.

I've used OBS (as Sokol suggested) with great results and there are a lot of robust, granular settings for compression, codec, etc.

JG4_Karaya originally suggested it to me and I believe he also made a tutorial video for setting OBS up.

I have Dxtory which is supposed to be very good but it will crash IL2 if you ALT TAB when it's running which is highly annoying.

I'll take a look at OBS as well :)
