No_85_Gramps Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Okay, so I am going to give this a try but a few questions first. I have TS set-up so should be no problem there. Now as far as WOL I take it that it is a full expert server? Takeoffs are from a parked position or runway? My CEM/taxiing skills probably need some tweaking but...nothing ventured, nothing gained.
=CFC=Conky Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Hi Gramps, WoL is a full switch server; you'll have to taxi, manage your engine, and navigate. The learning curve is steep but right now it's probably the most populated server. Good hunting, =CFC=Conky

Jade_Monkey Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Totally worth the effort of learning how to taxi and CEM. I feel like I enjoy the game way more now that I know how to do those things. Taking off is fun instead of a chore
=CFC=Conky Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 He won't have to Navigate though. Hmmm, I haven't been on WoL for a while now. True, you do get your plane icon when around your home base but I thought it disappeared when you got a certain distance away. Maybe I'm confusing it with the RoF Wargrounds server. So many sims...so little time....*Sigh* Good hunting, =CFC=Conky
71st_AH_Hooves Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Nope it's there the whole time. I much more enjoy no nav servers but for some reason people won't play on them.
SvAF/F19_Klunk Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I too enjoy "No nav help" kinda servers but I guess many feel it's too difficult to navigate on a piece of styrofoam where it is hard to discern geographical landmarks. I think and hope this will change with the new maps where it will be much easer to ID river, lakes and such.
Brano Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 You know, nowdays people cant find their way home from supermarket 2 clicks away from their homes without navigation in their cars 2
F/JG300_Gruber Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I can understand that, I do like to have to naviguate my way to the designated target, especially in official campaign events (to me GPS would be nonsense there) it is part of the simulation. But for chilling out on a server, I also like the nav aid, especially on Velikie. I have hard time to distinguish forests from cities at medium distances and that can be quite frustrating if you only wanted a small flight to relax.
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) You know, nowdays people cant find their way home from supermarket 2 clicks away from their homes without navigation in their cars Navigation is like 50% of flying, knowing where you are, knowing your course with and without a compass, calculating your route, landmarks etc. Someone who can't navigate should under no circumstances leave tha safe pattern of his airfield. Edit: Velvie is challenging, but not impossible. I had some of the most fun on the NoGPS Server when the map was new. Edited September 8, 2015 by -FDFHQ-Klaus_Mann

I never got really lost on the map, even though I had quite a few of those moments when you "must be somewhere in that area". Moreover, making the effort to plan your flight and navigate the hard way hones your skills in the long term. But sometimes it is relaxing of just take off, set course and watch your bombs hammer down the target without having to brain hard during all the flight. Edited September 8, 2015 by F/JG300_Gruber
6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Seen a lot of people getting kicked from this server for ping recently. The other night one of our guys had this issue and was lagging all over the place and last night myself as well even though my internet connection was stable and very fast. Is there any chance that the Dserver up/download limits have been reset to default or something?

Gramps are you the gramps that would play in the Hyperlobby? If it is once you start flying WOL and full Switch Gramps you will see there is no going back.
No_85_Gramps Posted September 13, 2015 Author Posted September 13, 2015 No, that's not me. I never used Hyperlobby. I have been practicing on the New Wings Warground server, usually I'm all alone, but their server is here in the States, nice low ping. After I fly some more there and do some polishing on my nav skills I'll be giving WOL a shot.
SCG_Neun Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) Gramps....make sure you map the tail wheel unlock for taxing...purposes and practice with it.......where you from in Virginia? Edited September 14, 2015 by 4./JG52_Neun
No_85_Gramps Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Gramps....make sure you map the tail wheel unlock for taxing...purposes and practice with it.......where you from in Virginia? I have it mapped but haven't practiced using it so far, having pretty good luck using throttle/brakes but I will definitely look into it. I'm in Prince George county but I'm pretty sure it's a lot prettier in the Shenandoah Valley! 1
