I've finished my flight training!

Hi guys,

For those of you that may remember, I started a thread waaay back in December last year about how I was starting my flight training in January by earning my private pilot, commercial pilot, and flight instructor certificates. Well I passed my final checkride yesterday (the CFII) so now I have my commercial and flight instructor certificates with additional multi-engine and instrument ratings for it. I've had a great big smile on my face for succeeding at this. The icing on the cake was making it through without failing any of the eight checkrides  My blog has a rundown of my last checkride if you're interested in reading it.

I also have an interview tomorrow, so if that goes well I'll be off to standardisation on Monday. I'm hoping to be back flying online more regularly and making videos once I'm settled in and figure out what kind of workload I'm under.

Cheers!

Excellent news Requiem, congratulations! I'm thrilled that your dream came true for you. There will be some lucky students indeed that benefit from your instruction (as we in the sim community have already benefitted).

Cheers mate!

Congratulations, and Well Done, Requiem!

You packed a *lot* of training into the past 8 months, and acing every test and checkride is an outstanding achievement to be proud of - it reflects the dedication and hard work you put into learning that material, and your students will benefit greatly from that effort.

Also, thanks for sharing the entire process on your blog with us -- it brought back some fond memories of my own flight training days (way back in '92), and provided some fascinating reading, following your progress through the training program.

Again, congratulations, and best of luck on your interview(s) and future career!

Cheers,

Thanks a lot everyone! I also passed my technical and flight interview today so now I have an instructing job and will be going to standardisation on Monday :)

Yeah it was definitely a lot of training packed in, but it wasn't unmanageable at least. Technically I should have finished it in 6 months but the weather delays slowed me down...I'm glad you enjoyed the blog though. I enjoyed writing it, but I just need to figure out how to take it out and print it as a diary so I have a hard copy. It was also great getting to meet you in Arizona and place a face to the name! If you ever come to Dallas let me know and we'll go flying :)

Bravo dude, Bravo!!!

Cheers! Now I'm done we'll have to see about getting you your Private ;)

That was the plan mate until I missed a class prerequisite by getting my only C (a C- in microbiology...brutal class), and the timeline to re-take that class then apply for the program would have set me back 18 months with no guarantee of acceptance because its so competitive. It just wasn't feasible so I was going to move back home until someone from the sim community encouraged me to go through this training to take on a new career of being a pilot. None of this would have happened without their generosity and support so I'll always be grateful for the opportunity they gave me. It's amazing to think they had the faith in me to make it through, so I worked hard to prove them right and make them proud. It's a real dream come true getting to do this and I'm excited to start training students of my own now!

Requiem, honestly, I feel Proud of you!

Every time I know of a successful story of someone with a passion for aviation managing to achieve her / his objectives, I feel proud, as if it was me !

Tell me, of the various sims you tried as a simmer, and with the experience you gained recently IRL, how do you rate the experience of simulated flight in IL2 BoS ?

I ask because I have been flying since 35 yrs. Although only gliders, I have actually had the chance to "fly" other aircraft types and, honestly, among the various flight simulation programs I have used, by far IL2 BoS and X-Plane ( with the best models for it... ) excel in terms of transmitting to their users the "sensation of being there".

All of the Best for the next steps in your career. Now it's getting the most time you can, some type ratings for commercial, and.... you know what :-)

U R DA MAN!

Contratulations, Sir!

Wish I could live and work in the states, everything seems a little easier, too much restriction in this "banana republic" so called germany!

Anyway you managed a lot of hard work and learning. Respect!

Deal

It was my pleasure to hook up with you and your CFI when you flew into Gateway (and an added bonus watching the Harriers come in when I got there). If I get over your way, I'll definitely give you a shout -- it's been awhile since I got any RL stick time in...

So, any thoughts on continuing your blog on an occasional basis?

I'm sure it would be interesting reading comparing a bit of the new teaching life to your initial training program, and possibly hear some "silly student" anecdotes (without embarrassing anyone, of course).  ;)

I, for one, would be curious to hear how things are going as you settle into your new role.

Well my experience isn't really representative of these high performance aircraft in the sims so you'd have to take what I think with a grain of salt. I'm not quite back up and running to compare sims anyway as I haven't flown them often at all during my training. The main thing that stuck out to me when I did fly BoS (the one I flew the most often) was that the control effectiveness (particularly the rudder) felt too high. I choose to reduce the maximum in-game deflection of my rudder to 80% because to me the rudder is much too effective after I take off and increase airspeed. I'm not really worried about that though to be honest because I just deal with how each sim is and adjust my flying accordingly. Once I get back into flying these sims more often I can gather some better thoughts for you but right now that issue is just what comes to mind immediately.

Great :) I'd like to post some more about how things are progressing and some stories as I go along for sure. I'll need to delay making a post until Friday though because I'm super busy. I have about an hour commute to my new airport right now so I leave early and don't get home until late. The standardisation class is going very well though and I got checked out in the C172 today :)

Seriously Requiem & Speed, you guys got together and no pictures? Not even a group "selfie"? My family and I are headed out to Dallas this Thanksgiving to visit our kids. Who knows, we might get together for minute or two. And defiantly continue your blog.
