Will texture resolutions ever be improved?

Recommended Posts

Just been watching footage of DCS world two and one thing that has struck me is that textures look so much better on that game.. Look so much more detailed and realistic compared to BOS. Is there any chance that our textures could be improved (Outside and inside the cockpit?) I know there potentially would be a performance reduction but if it was a selectable option to have better resolution textures then people that don't want them wouldn't suffer! Just a thought, would love to hear everyone else's opinions on this.

This is the video I watched and at some points it looks amazingly realistic!

This is an unfair expectation.  Sorry Bullets, but DCS World 2.0 has been in development for several years, and is benefitting from being several quarters behind BoS.  To ask this sort of thing is to ask, when does BoS Engine 2.0 come out and when will we have textures that are superior to a Sim that hasn't even gone gold yet?

Perhaps one day, we'll see something in the way of an engine improvement, but BoS is a Combat flight sim, that is where it excels, and there is an inherent trade off in quality versus quantity.  If you want large Air Battles with loads of PLayer and AI Aircraft (for SP) then you can't build perfect models with millions of polygons or you'll choke the sim with one airplane.

As it stands now, it is DCS 2.0 that is playing catch up with BoS in terms of aircraft textures...

4096x4096 inside cockpit texture pleeeaaaase.

We use flight sim INSIDE cockpit

the first stage should be:   photorealistic inside cockpit and inside motor sounds at top level.

@TheElf

It's not an expectation!   also I didn't / don't think improving textures would be that "hard" or a killer of the engine? I never said anything about increasing polygon counts you seem to have missed my point..

I want it to be clearer than it was in real life...

So basically, you're suggesting that the devs not only rework every single texture in the sim, but that they in the future make extra versions of every new texture they create henceforth.

Doesn't sound realistic to me, sorry.

Also: Comparing BoS to videos of DCS World 2 is kinda like comparing actual sex to porn. So far, most of us have no idea how much of an improvement World 2 really is (other than it obviously is a huge step forward from the DCS that exists now - but that's really not saying much) A youtube video, regardless of resolution, is not really a great way to discern the quality of graphics in a video game.

Well BOS is DX9 and with that said it looks good enough. However I would like them to improve visuals of damages on wings etc...currently it looks really ugly.

See, this I agree with. THat's a specific thing that could actually be improved. Basically redoing every single texture is just not feasible.

yes damage textures needs a huge bump, as now are quite low quality for the average of the sim

They wouldn't need to create extra versions, downgrading quality of an image can be done automatically, you only need the original high quality image. May not be realistic but it would awesome? If anything youtube videos make things look worse so I have to disagree with you. This video of DCS looks amazing so I guess the actual product potentially would be ever better?  & @blackram there is already a thread about the poor quality of damage visuals but I agree!  :)

I'll just throw these damage pictures out again, I run the game on the highest setting.  :P

Frankly I dont see how DCS has better in-cockpit textures. That video does not show anything that BOS doesnt have in terms of texture quality.

I do like how much snappier and responsive the head camera movements are in DCS, it would be  great to get that in BOS.

I also agree with the damage pictures, they do feel sub-par, especially compared to the rest of the game.

We need a Mods-on mode.

For a long time now.

But hey, screw the community right?

I was actually wondering if the texture size was limited. Of course people make great skins, but if someone took the time to properly up-rez the skins would they still work correctly? It would be nice if we could create higher resolution cockpit and plane skins for the player plane, leaving out the others for performance reasons. Sometimes though, the engine itself will reduce the size to a format. It would be nice to know if this is the case so energy isn't wasted.

It's unlikely you will see any increase in texture sizes unless we migrate to 64bit. We keep textures a certain size for memory purposes. And I have no idea if or when we will move to 64bit. If we ever make that move you'll be the first to know.

Thanks for the info Jason.

Im confused now. ROF can definitely utilise more memory and get some juice from 64 bits. It was even discussed there on forums....But maybe I misunderstood something...

Thanks Jason! Great to know!  :)

Also just wondering what would the benefits to BOS/BOM/ROF be if the client was updated to 64bit architecture?

Don't know about cockpits but 4k skins work on aircraft. Only downside with that is they must be without reflective map or they'll exeed the 8MB limit of the game engine.

Textures are basicly the major downside of BoS currently in my opinion. Although they're still good (and incase of BoM aircraft very good) for their size it shows it's limits, especially on big aircraft and interiour textures.

Improving texture resolution as a part of moving to 64bit would make a lot more sense. I hope the devs will be ready to make that jump at some point. We all know faster processors will come in time, but without a move to 64bit, there is just no chance that this sim will ever be able to support really large formations of AI aircraft, there's just not gonna be RAM for it.
