JtD Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Maybe this time I'm not just repeating what other folks might have posted already, but if I did, sorry in advance. It's a video of P-51 Twilight Tear firing its guns at a range. I think it's an interesting reference for muzzle flash and smoke effects for heavy machine guns, maybe even sound. 2
Sternjaeger Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) yep, we posted it in several other topics, it'd be good if the devs noticed that the muzzle flash for live machine guns is not as the flash you get with guns firing blanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmln5aChX0s another aircraft machine gun (.303 in this case) shooting live ammo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PjLpqWFFEo and a live AN/M2 machine gun with incendiaries (at 1:07) Edited October 27, 2013 by Sternjaeger 1
JtD Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 I was afraid so...I have seen the others, but didn't see the one with the P-51. It's a pity these videos are buried so deep in some topics that one can't be bothered to search for them.
Sternjaeger Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 the least we can do is go through thematic posts, like this one. References and content should be carefully selected though!
GOAT-ACEOFACES Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 I like the video in that it shows how much force the guns have when firing.. As in even with the plane strapped down, it still manages to move it backwards.. And these are very Very VERY short burst! Which in turn should be clear to all that the force of these guns could and do affect the speed of the plane during flight.
Sternjaeger Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) it is surely informative, and if the plane was just sitting on its landing gear it would probably move backwards. But please bear in mind that whilst it might have some effect on a still aircraft, it has been calculated already that the recoil would be a truly negligible force against the aircraft motion in flight, with little or no influence on the aircraft's airspeed. MiloMorai Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Interesting discussion here, http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/aviation/can-gun-recoil-really-slow-fighter-38864.html
JtD Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 I didn't understand why there is a multipage discussion, because frankly it's simple physics. You spit out 1 kg of lead at 800m/s, your 4000kg plane goes 0.2m/s slower. Conservation of momentum.
DD_bongodriver Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 It's like no-one ever heard of Newton.
sturmkraehe Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) It's a great clip and visualizes well that there is no big "fire" spitting guns. We should have it like that in IL2! With taking into account that the muzzle smoke would evolve differently when flying than on ground Edited January 16, 2014 by sturmkraehe
