A train delayed 70 years ...

I'm sure some of you have heard of the gossip that a German train which departed from Breslau (Wrocław today) some day in May 1945 and never reached its destination, was claimed to be found lately :

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33994483

According to Minister of Culture its almost certain that this train exists and he admitted that he saw it on radar images :

http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la-fg-poland-nazi-gold-train-20150828-story.html

Apparently it is an armoured train, 100 meters long which according to those who know where it is was mined to protect its secrets. Mines will explode if anybody would try to mess around. So even if it will be found the area still would have to be carefully explored and explosives have to be disarmed. That would be unfortunate if 70 years after the war someone would die because of nazis secrets.

Interesting thing is also that before even getting into it, there are already claims from some organizations (World Jewish Congress) to the treasure.

But nonetheless this may be a history news of a year, no matter what we will find there :)

Maybe its full of crated Burmese Spitfires.

I hope so, that would be a big surprise and nobody would make claims to gold, ancestors, etc. Otherwise it could be full of nothing  :)

We could drag it to museum and anyone could enjoy such a rare piece of history.

are they kidding us? world jewish congress, as if they weren't pereptuating the stereotype enough, thinks they have a claim to it?

by what right? some misplaced sense of entitlement? reparation?

no, the only people who have a right to it are the german people. [Edited].

These kinds of comments are unacceptable.

I'd like to ask you not to use such language, we are civilized people, there is no need to use such language here.

Second thing, we do not know what this train contains. If that is air, uranium, Hitlers monuments or valuables from Breslau banks. It's hard to say to who belongs what when you dont know what is there.

And when we will know, in case of valuables or belongings - if a certain person making claims to a certain item can prove his rights (aka someone is a son or a grandson or granddaughter of the owner, or has some legal documents) than such items could be given back. In any other event, when rightful owner cannot be found or right cannot be proven than in accordance with polish law what contains the train belongs to the Republic of Poland. No other country, nor some private organization should make a claim.

I hoped to bring something interesting to the section, did not expect such emotions ...

why they didnt follow the railtracks to find it?

Probably because there are no tracks, Germans were smart enough to remove them and cover the area. It's near the whole Riese complex :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Riese

(video has german subtitles)

You could hide there more than a few trains, than just collapse the entrances and clear the roads to it ... and things vanish. And of course it was a standard to kill workers after that, so no witnesses except for some SS officers.

i feel confused about the whole news, seems trully idiocrazy is coming

It already may have started :)

If some of this can be traced back to the original; families who owned it it should be returned. If not it should go to a museum.

Shades of supposed buried Spitfires in Burma. Remember how that worked out?

He's already gone.  I've noticed johncage just passes by in regular cycles, rather like a noxious comet.  He just seems to do the rounds of a number of websites and simply leaves a faint tail of hateful remarks in his wake.

There is a solid answer to johnycage's question, cargo of the train (if it exists, it may or may not be scam, possibly made up to influence new Polish law about ownership of found masterless relics which is being changed right now  ); may include identifiable valuables confiscated from Jews. Or other valuables, or documents, or whatever was being evacuated from Breslau.

I got the info from a Dutch newssite yesterday. According the site the pictures were made the 5th of September by probably illegal treasure diggers.

And pictures were handed over yesterday afternoon by an anonymous person. A bit mysterious all together, because why a Dutch newspaper and not a Polish or German one?

Anyway, according the site Germany will publish more info in relation to the Nazi train and its pictures later that day.

Since it is Saturday already I searched the web but have not found any new information.

http://www.telegraaf.nl/binnenland/24652869/__Mysterieuze_foto_s_van_nazitrein_in_Polen__.html

Perhaps photos are fake and a blunder by the newspaper to publish them. Or the entire Nazi train story is one big hoax.

If not, well you are gonna have a tough meal to digest.  :P

They look like screen grabs from a video game cutscene to me, though I don't know what game.

All those nazi wonka bars...

It's odd that after 70 years there is no accumulation of dust or breakdown of materials. The secret society symbol is a really nice touch though.

Yes, and a real one would obviously have HUGE swastikas on it.

The arch that's on the first photo on the left edge behind the train doesn't exist on the fourth photo, which is made at the same angle. The scale of the train seems different also between the first and last photo. I agree it's nice of them to dust off the entire train for the photos. It wouldn't shine like that after 70 years, with a couple inches of dust. Just my observation.

Polish journalists went to a game-expert to see if it might be a shopped screenshot from a game. After his analysis he excluded the photos to be part of a computer game.

But he has his doubts about the way pictures are lit.

It is indeed something experts are wondering about. How come that after the explosions to block the entrances there is no debris or dust on top of the green canvases?

That wooden crates still look brand new is not such a surprise according insiders because in those days crates were impregnated with oil to protect them.

I also noticed differences between 1st and 4th image. I think those two trains are different ones. The first one -with the higher middle part with the big white 8 on it- is perhaps the diesel locomotive, and the one on the 4th image is a train wagon.

Polish journalists went also to the National Railway Museum in Warsaw and according the museum the diesel locomotive is a ‘Panzertriebwagen 16'. There are differences between images and the train they have in their collection. The museum one is captured by the Russians and donated after the war. It was not uncommon that Russians removed and added parts to trains when it was in their possession. Therefor the differences.

On the other hand museum specialists can not exclude that photos are taken from their website and photoshopped afterwards.

All info here but in Dutch:

A big mystery anyway.

Those ingots are not silver.  That's aluminium.

So now we know;  Those Burmese Spitfires were never buried, they were melted down and sent to Germany right at the end of the war in a large, secret cargo carrying submarine that then took Hitler and  Martin Boorman to Maui.

Yep, all making sense now.

I had the same impression.

On the other hand, the more you watch at something the more you discover.

And when having your doubts the more you discover that confirms your doubts.

There is one element in last 3 images I wonder.

Why is time and date in left bottom corner so pixelated?

Usually it is crispy clear and much sharper than anything else on a photo.

Wouldn't water have accumulated in the tunnels or at least the train have rusted from the huge amount of humidity underground?

Yep that's why I think they're fake. I think silver would tarnish as well.
