reddog=11blueleader* Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 The remains of this Red Army plane was downed by Germans in January 1945 was found August 23rd 2015 in Wyszogrod, Poland it the muddy riverbed. Recent drought that brought river levels down had made access to the aircraft remains possible. Thought I would share this with you. 1
216th_Peterla Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Quite interesting. Do they know what type of aircraft?
Finkeren Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 (edited) Quite interesting. Do they know what type of aircraft?Well, it's obviously a V-engine, so for 1945 it can really only be a Klimov or a Mikunin. It definately looks more like a Mikunin (the Klimov has loads of stuff protuding from the block itself, and has a very obvious 'rounded triangular' part at the front, which I guess houses the chain drive, and which is absent in this picture.) It's propably an AM-38 meaning the aircraft was an IL-2. The IL-2 is not really a 'fighter bomber' but you can see how the news media could be confused about that. TWC_Ace Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 (edited) Apparently they found two bodies of soviet pilots inside the plane. It is probably IL-2. RIP pilots Edited August 26, 2015 by blackram_
