The BOS campaign can be truly awesome!

I just played a few He-111 bomber missions again after taking a break from BOS. My mission was to bomb a railway station and everything went well. It looked so cool when my bombs and my wingmans bombs hit the target. So beautiful seeing the railway getting obliterated

Then I see 3-4 Russian fighters closing in. My escorts ran out of ammo before we got to the target area so they were gone. One of my 5 wingmans went up in flames and crashed then they targeted me. I love to be a gunner so I swap to the belly gunner and manages to get an amazing shot at long range. It looked like I blow his engine in a single shot and he was gone. Then came another wave and thanks to my 5 wingmans we made them retreat.

This is why I love the BOS campaign. You always get these kind of missions and every missions is so epic.

If only we could use custom setting instead of only Normal and Expert. I like to fly on expert setting but being able to use external camera(need to look on that beauty)

And I hope the devs can fix the annoying bug with the He-111 bombsight when using auto pilot left/right turn  :)

Also cant wait to be able to bomb targets on the summer map!

Any else got some cool story from a campaign mission that were a little more awesome than usual?

Honestly, as the game develops, as the AI gets more reliable, etc, I think the "campaign" - if you treat it as an awesome quick mission generator - will just continue to improve.

From looking at some of the missions it generates, the technology looks great, and - whisper it - the rationale that the devs had (which was that most users of flight sims didn't play MP and didn't play traditional campaigns, but rather than just crank out quick QMB encounters might go for something a bit more involving), that rationale was also good!

Maybe if the "Campaign" had been called something like Uber-QMB, or - erm - QMB-Plus, etc, it would have been more accepted by our flightsim fraternity. [And that's without the "earning XP for mods" thing, which obviously didn't really work].

I really hope - once the "levels" and XP and mods have quietly been forgotten and updated out of existence - people will discover the "campaign" as a powerful and flexible and cool tool for using this game as a single player.

I hope they add to it and develop it in BOM, too!

-snip-

Dynamic Mission Builder (DMB) is not only a pretty slick sounding marketing term but it also describes the concept as well. It would also stand itself apart from the "traditional campaign" concept as well.

EDIT: Random Mission Builder (RMB) would probably work as well but doesn't sound as "cool" in my opinion.

You can have custom settings for the missions but will need to use the ME to fly them outside of the XP tracking campaign. See my previous post for more details. http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/16484-seriously-some-these-campaign-missions-are/page-3?do=findComment&comment=279285

I think if you play in normal mode you can manually turn off as many 'helps' as you want, and achieve the same as 'expert' with outside views

Fairly sure the Dev's referred to it as AQMB (advanced) but I may be wrong ;) Flew a mission the other day, turned out to be just Myself and a wing man in Pe-2's on a dawn train busting mission, weather was fairly bad but with decent enough vis at low level, knocked out the train, the two Lagg's circled overhead , No enemy fighters seen, mission accomplished so ran for home at speed, treetop level

Now that doesn't sound very special but there really were lots of small details going on during  the flight, the weather was very convincing and dawn does look nice, after landing I reflected that that was 10 times more immersive than any mission from original IL-2 standard campaign missions, dynamic or scripted they were actually pretty bland and stale.

Now that was at level 9, some of the missions give you impossible odds with no chance of completing the mission, I guess that is true in RL, and the only option is to abandon and run, but a little logic tweaking on some of the mission types to avoid generating total suicide missions would be a good idea

A question: Do you get harder missions and harder enemy AI the higher level you are?

Thanks. I will check that out for sure :)

One very good thing with BoS is the ability to bind functions to multiple keys, for expert experience in normal mode bind all helps off that you want disabled, to one unused key, one key press before engine start and you have a 'custom' setting

You can, press LSht+R, LSht+m and LSht+N at the start of the mission to toggle engine assists off. I just hope we get custom settings at some point. I like external views, can`t play without them. And has been shot down many times because of them :D

You are right, I remember that. It would be more suitable to be called that. Or something like Space_Ghost suggested.

What comes to the missions created by the AQMB, at times they are very enjoyable. I had Stuka airfield bombing mission last night with 5 wingmen and escorts and it was a blast. Lots of action and excitement. Over the time from release of BoS the missions have been coming better.

But that being said there is a lot of work to be done with missions and AI. I hope we see those things improved in the upcoming campaign update.

I think anything awesome in the current campaign is purely coincidental.

Yep...

Some missions were so nice that I used to save them to replay them later (but it seems it does not work anymore)

I also did this when I stupidly failed my mission.

But though missions can be very good, I would not call this a campaign but a random mission generator

I haven't played the campaign since the release of the FMB. Were there any noticeable improvements to the campaign missions in the last months?

IMO there have been improvements all along from the release. Can`t really prove it, it`s just a feeling I got from playing a lot of those missions. The basics are fine with Advanced QMB, just needs tuning the missions further and a somekind of frame around it(like Warhamm`s career generator with ingame interface) and we have a thing that can be called a real Campaign.

I recently flew a night IL-2 mission on expert and I pressed i to turn off my position on the map so it was all dead reckoning etc. Proper navigation. I wasn't exactly sure of my position on the RTB leg and was using the clock in the cockpit to time my return and as I counted down the last seconds with no airbase in sight in the darkness 5..4..3..2..1 exactly at zero the flare rose up in front of me. Good feeling! Then seeing the landing fires gradually light, then the landing area lights - really nice. So well done.

I was amazed the first time I saw that as well.

Off topic, but a good opportunity for a shameless plug for the mission building forum :P : We've managed, more or less, to take that landing lights "group" out of the campaign missions (it's in every mission, I think, even daylight ones - it's just that the lights and flare are controlled by a day/night trigger, as well as more usual proximity triggers) and make it available for mission builders. I've tried to adapt it for MP missions - and I think it works OK (but it's hard to test because most of my squadron don't want to fly night missions!  :(

See the Group Sharing thread for details!...

I love night missions, so that's great to know. I'll be sure to use it if I ever figure out how to use the ME.

Yes, I like this feature as well as it lets me bind cowl flaps, inlet flaps and water radiator to a single key. That way I don't have to hit around the keyboard in flight.

Good hunting,
